Mum turns tidy profit selling kids’ homewares

The cookie stamp set features cute animal designs, and Ms Cullen says it can be used for baking or playing with playdough.

Since her business started, Ms Cullen has seen a huge growth in competitors offering similar silicone products.

But, she says hers stand out since they are made from scratch, rather than being “stock standard products that are templated from a factory” with a competitor’s label stuck on the front.

Looking to the future, Ms Cullen said she is looking to start creating products for kid’s play.

“I’ve got a bath book and some bath toys made from the material silicone, which means it’s dishwasher safe and lends itself to bath toys being thrown into the dishwasher so they are not going to get mouldy,” she said.

She added that sensory toys, such as teethers and textured toys, would also be rolled out by the end of the year.

Image: We Might Be Tiny (Facebook)

Supermarket wars heat up: Coles' big plan to beat ALDI with hot new range

Coles has just released its new homewares range with affordable items, a stylish look and a much more exciting weekly grocery shop.

The supermarket giant has included everything in its latest release from cushions all the way to lamps.

Dominique Lamb, CEO of the National Retail Association, told A Current Affair the latest release is all about convenience.

"It's all about going in store or online and being able to pick up as many things as possible, so that you don't have to go to a million places,” Lamb said.

All the nifty items were made to appeal to those looking to ramp up their home styling without having to go out of their way to look for must-have items elsewhere or without spending too much.

Coles' homewares range has 70 per cent of their items costing $10 or less and only 4 per cent costing more than $20 – with nothing over $30.

The Your Home range will not be around for long, however, and the supermarket is urging customers to get their foot in the door before it is too late.

The ‘limited-time’ move has proven to be a successful scheme for ALDI, who offers bi-weekly Special Buys for cheap prices.

"ALDI has done really well with their Special Buy range," Lamb said.

"That's because they are for a limited time, often they're very high quality items that are sold in a particular range, in a particular location and really it's become a bit of a cult following."

The Your Home range will be available until August 25.

The collection includes:

2-pack Pet Bag – $2

Succulent in Glass Pot – $5

Decorative Ceramic and Wood Canister – $6

Mahala Jar (ceramic pot with lid and leather handle) – $6

Felt Storage Box – $10

Velvet Cushion – $13

Timber Photo Frame – $15

Plush Throw – $15

Four Draw Timber Storage Box – $12

Maya Table Top Lamp – $25

Round Wall Shelf – $25

Vintage Pyrex owners could be sitting on a gold mine

Vintage pyrex items have become a hot commodity among collectors, and if you own any of these classic homewares items you could be sitting on a gold mine.

While it’s more than a century after the famous glassware products first made their debut, they remain hot items among collectors with popular Facebook pages like Pyrex Passion boasting huge numbers of enthusiastic members.

A single vintage Pyrex bowl from the 1940s recently sold for a whopping $1,000 recently, with Etsy selling a Pristine Pink Gooseberry Pyrex set for $1,850. NPR even claim some vintage Pyrex pieces in could knick could be worth $3,000.

Pyrex’s shortcomings (pieces are heavy to carry and not dishwasher-safe) have not impacted its popularity with collectors, who love the piece’s durability and pretty patterns, and the fact that they’re usable after so many years.

Pyrex Passion administrator Kristina West, “I'm always surprised by the number of people collecting that didn't know how many others were out there.

“It's like their secret shame.”

Do you have any pyrex pieces at home? Hang onto them, they might be worth a bundle!

Hero image credit: Facebook / Vintage Treasures & Cherished Memories

Homewares as gifts: Should you, or shouldn’t you?

Never in my life have I been gifted a homeware item that I’d buy for myself.

There have been some gifts that I’ve come around to with time: a set of rustic earthenware bowls given to me by Mum at Christmas definitely weren’t my style, but I’ve since found their proportions handy for everything from porridge to pasta.

There have been less successful gifts (as beautiful as they are, the $200-a-pop crystal champagne glasses we received for our wedding never get used), and outright disasters, too – including some items I’ve re-gifted and am too ashamed to identify.

To me, homewares are as personal as clothes. They must be the perfect fit. What works for you one season won’t work the next, and it is unwise to think that a particular item somebody has bought for themselves is indicative of their whole interior style.

Sure, maybe somebody has a coastal theme at their abode (and you’ve seen lots of blue-and-white stripes there), but buying them anything from model yachts to ornamental oars is absolute overkill.

While it may seem ungrateful and disrespectful to turn one’s nose down at any kind of gift, I’ve an anecdote that may change your mind.

Thirty years ago, my best friend’s mother had a few chooks in her backyard. Somebody bought her a tea towel with a chicken on it as a gift, to which she expressed polite thanks (but was less than keen on).

The giver of said gift must have told all friends and family members that chicken homewares were the way to go. Every subsequent birthday and Christmas for three decades, all she received was chicken-themed items. Plates with chickens on them. Chicken salt and pepper shakers. Metal chicken garden ornaments.

My friend’s mum eventually confessed – knowing it was far too late – “I hate this stuff!”. She had found herself in a deep hole of chook-wares and could see no way out.

To this day, her house looks like a memorial to Colonel Sanders.

Now, many may think the better option here would have been to simply say you didn’t like a gift in the first place. Oh, hindsight, such a wonderful thing. But here’s the problem with that: you can’t openly express discontent to the giver when you receive a gift. It makes you an awful human being.

The real solution here is just to not give homewares as gifts at all, unless you really, really know the person.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: if you would buy them a jacket or a shirt as a gift, it’s probably OK to buy them a throw or some crockery.

As for any homewares gift that is personal and unique? I’d say you’d need to know them well enough to buy them a pair of pants, too. If you’re close enough to someone to know their hip-to-waist ratio, leg length and preferred fit, you know them well enough to gift an artisanal scented candle or ever-so-intimate sheet set.

First appeared on Domain.com.au.

To find your home essentials head to the Over60 Shop for high-quality offerings.
