A frightening accident marred the LVV Saarland Trofeo in Germany when an elderly woman on a mobility scooter rode into the path of riders during the race.
The incident happened in the fourth and final stage of the LVV Saarland Trofeo, an annual junior multi-day event held in Germany. Seventeen-year-old Paul Vriesman was racing when he collided with the pensioner.
The impact with the woman’s scooter also brought down several other competitors, with the tight course contributing to the crash.

The pensioner reportedly wanted to get a better look at the athletes, misjudged the situation, and rode directly onto the course. pic.twitter.com/oA27t7QhA1
Afterward, Vriesman addressed the incident on his personal Instagram account, writing: “Nasty crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well and with no major injuries.
“Not the way I was hoping to finish my first week back to racing after a few months of rehab though.
“I made some big steps this week towards coming back to my old form.
“Sad to have to DNF this Saarland Trofeo this way due to an old lady who was just living in her own world.”
It is not known whether the woman suffered any serious injuries in the collision.
