Scotty Cam joins in on Block challenge

In a series first, Scotty Cam will be both hosting and taking part in The Block, having been tasked with renovating a 154-year-old country retreat.

Season 18 of The Block will see Cam tackle a “weatherboard House” built in 1866 by Scottish immigrant Joseph McGeorge.

But, the 59-year-old had a headstart on this season’s contestants, starting to make over the home - which has been desolate for 25 years and left “falling to bits” - three months before the contestants.

As the teams work on their houses each week, Cam will continue to renovate his property and even be included in the room reveals.

So far, Cam has completed three rooms, including a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette, though the exterior of the property is covered in scaffolding and the exterior walls, roof and verandah have been ripped apart.

The formerly drab and aged bedroom has been given a modern country vibe, with navy blue panelling on the walls and a bed frame panelled with rattan.
Cam continued the navy theme into the bathroom, transforming the grimy room with its pink sink and sky blue tiles into a spacious area with a grey tiled splashback, more navy wood panelling, a free-standing bath and a spacious shower separated by a glass screen.

As for the kitchenette, the dirt-filled room still had remains of old kitchen utensils on the tables and a barren oven cavity which was transformed in a modern space with navy furniture and decor, beige wall panelling, timber floorboards, under-cabinet lighting, a bar fridge under the new bench, and new cabinetry.

It was revealed that Cam would be picking up renovating tools during the show last year, and his progress comes amid stellar ratings following the controversial departure of Elle Ferguson and Joel Patfull.

The engaged couple left after being on-set for just two days, after Patfull’s mother was hospitalised following a fall, though Cam described their behaviour as “p*** poor” and “un-Australian”.

Images: Nine

Patch me up, Scotty! Remote surgery robot destined for ISS

Strap yourself in so you don’t float away, select the required procedure, lie back and relax as your autonomous surgery robot patches you up from whatever space ailment bothers you. Sound far-fetched?

Not according to Professor Shane Farritor, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, who has just received funding from NASA to prepare his miniature surgical robot for a voyage to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024.

MIRA, which stands for “miniaturised in vivo robotic assistant” is comparatively little for a surgery-performing machine – small enough to fit inside a microwave-sized experimental locker within the ISS. The brainchild of Farritor and colleagues at the start-up company Virtual Incision, MIRA has been under development for almost 20 years.

The ultimate aim for MIRA is to be able to perform surgery autonomously and remotely, which has far-reaching ramifications for urgent surgery in the field – whether that’s in the depths of space, a remote location or even in a war-torn region.

Initially MIRA won’t go near anyone’s body. Once on the ISS, it will autonomously perform tasks designed to mimic the movements required for surgery, such as cutting stretched rubber bands and pushing metal rings along a wire.

Being autonomous is important as it won’t need to access bandwidth to communicate back to Earth.

MIRA has already successfully completed surgery-like tasks via remote operation including a colon resection.

Space is the next frontier.

Farritor says, as people go further and deeper into space, they might need surgery. “We’re working toward that goal.”

The stint on the ISS will not only mark the most autonomous operation so far, but it will also provide insight into how such devices might function in zero gravity.

The dream goal is for MIRA to function entirely on its own, says Farritor. Just imagine: “the astronaut flips a switch, the process starts, and the robot does its work by itself. Two hours later, the astronaut switches it off and it’s done”.

As anyone who has seen the scene in the movie, The Martian, can attest, it would certainly make pulling a wayward antenna spike out of yourself from within a deserted Martian habitat station far more comfortable.

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. The Block’s Scotty Cam weighs in on “identical bedrooms”

After days of controversy on-air and online, The Block host Scott Cam has weighed in on contestants Luke and Jasmin’s “copycatted” bedroom.

The TV host has determined the kids bedroom is “virtually identical” to the room they have been accused of ripping off.

Cam couldn’t resist stirring the pot on Wednesday night’s episode, by making sure Luke and Jasmin’s competitors knew something was wrong, a day after judge Shaynna Blaze had visited the pair to confront the pair on-air.

The WA couple received a perfect score of 30 for their kid’s bedroom and bathroom on Sunday’s episode.

However eagle-eyed viewers found the winning room was incredibly similar to a kid’s bedroom at a popular Byron Bay Airbnb created by design company The Designory.

Blaze confronted the two in Tuesday’s episode, informing them that there was a difference between “inspiration” and “completely taking someone else’s idea”.

“Hey, did Shaynna come and visit you guys yesterday?” Cam asked the South Australian couple Daniel and Jade during his visit one episode later.

“Because you know, it’s not always good news when Shaynna comes visiting. That’s all I’m saying. Alright, let’s go,” he said.

A couple of houses down with Jimmy and Tam, Cam couldn’t play coy any longer.

“Did you hear about Shaynna popping in next door? What’s your thoughts?” he asked the pair, who were aware of the reason for Shaynna’s visit.

Jimmy and Tam showed their reluctance on speaking ill of Luke and Jasmin.

“Umm … in all honesty, we’re not that worried about it. We know that other people might have a few issues about it. Jas did show me the image, and it does have a … very similar influence,” said Tam.

Tam said she and Jimmy had “made sure” to keep their designs original.

“I don’t really look at too much inspiration. I don’t have Instagram, I don’t have Facebook – I don’t want other people’s designs in our house,” she said.

Luke and Jasmin told news.com.au that they were “blindsided” by Shaynna Blaze's visit, labelling her “insincere” and a “smart-arse.”

The couple have since deleted their Facebook page and restricted comments on their joint Instagram account after being met with a heap of criticism from viewers.

2019’s couple Mitch and Mark reached out to Luke and Jasmin with a message of “support and positive wishes”.

“Hope you guys are doing OK & know from our experience it all goes away,” the pair wrote in a comment on Luke and Jasmin’s latest Instagram post.

“It’s definitely come as a surprise just how nasty the online world can be. We’ve never had people dislike us. So this is all new,” Luke and Jas said.

“We’ve deleted Facebook so we don’t see anything on there. Staying positive about our beautiful home and focusing on the rooms left and the auction.”

"Three words I didn't think I'd say today. Back to work!"

Things changed quickly as there was a second emergency meeting during the episode.

"We have been monitoring the situation hour-by-hour, and I'm afraid to say it's getting worse, not better. Scotty Cam on what’s in store for The Block during lockdown

The 2020 season of The Block will be unlike any other due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Production was brought to a grounding halt in March, with the cast and crew returning to the show's new $15million site in Melbourne's Brighton in May.

And speaking to Realestate.com.au on Monday ahead of Sunday's premiere, host Scott Cam was unsure about what may happen to production on the 2021 season.

When asked whether there's been “any word yet” on filming for 2021, the 57-year-old said: “It's too early to tell - I have no idea about next year and what the story is.

“I don't even know about this year's auction. Scott Cam speaks out: "I was upset"

After two long, action-packed episodes where viewers watched The Block contestants Mark and Mitch, go head to head with show’s host Scott Cam, their issues have finally been put to rest.

The couple apologised to Scott on Tuesday night’s episode after an explosive argument aroused from Mark and Mitch accusing the host of being homophobic.

Cam repeatedly called their second living space a “party room,” much to the dismay of the contestants who felt their “party room” meant a judgement on their lifestyle.

“By 2019 homophobic innuendos are f***ing not on,” a furious Mitch said to Cairns couple Tess and Luke at the time.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mitch and Mark (@mitchandmark) on Sep 8, 2019 at 2:40am PDT

“F***ing done with comments from people like him, aimed at people like me. We had been self-centred, and thought about how things were affecting us, and had left Scotty’s feelings out of it.”

“I feel so much better now because I was upset,” the host said after breaking away from their group hug, joking: “I’m glad that you like me again.”

"Homophobic": Scott Cam strikes back at The Block contestants in another heated exchange

Tension have continued to run high on another episode of The Block as the fiery couple Mitch and Mark went head to head with Scott Cam.

On Sunday night, Mitch and Mark blew up at the show’s host for constantly referring to their upstairs living area as a “party room,” and implied he was judging their lifestyle.

The accusation made for an uncomfortable exchange in which Cam insisted he was delivering the feedback by the judges who praised contestants El’ise and Matt for designing their bedroom from the “noisy people” next door.

While Mitch said he wished to put the argument to bed, footage aired on Monday night's episode of him saying Scott should :”Go f**k himself”.

“By 2019 homophobic innuendos are f***ing not on,” Mitch furiously said to Cairns couple Tess and Luke while backstage.

“F***ing done with comments from people like him, aimed at people like me. Go f**k yourself,” he exclaimed.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Block (@theblock) on Sep 9, 2019 at 4:49am PDT

Cam later approached the couple to “clear the air” by saying: “I want to make it clear when I say and when the judges say you’re designing a home for people like you — they’re referring to cashed up empty nesters like me and my wife, like you guys, like some of our friends who are in their 50s — that’s who we’re referring to.

“It’s a bit concerning,” he continued.

“Nothing could be further from the truth if you thought we were just referring to something about sexuality or gay couples, that is absolutely not the case,” Cam said. Mark responded “You and I had joked about it being a ‘party house’, that it’s about people partying, going out, late nights and I said no we don’t do that anymore …

“There was that connection made, but I understand now and I accept what you’re saying.”

Cam reiterated he meant no offence and said he was “flabbergasted” as to why they were so impacted, but still felt sorry.

While Mark accepted the apology, the situation escalated when Cam pointed out the couple had a “service kitchen” in a living area which would in fact make their space an entertainment area.

“A kitchen that wraps around the room to service the living area with a bar area and food service points … you keep saying this is not the party house, which we’re not going to call it anymore … ” the host began said before Mitch interjected; “It’s an entertaining space.”

Cam became frustrated and added: “By the way, I know things were said about me, with regard to my character about you guys, and I don’t accept that.

“I was offended and I was expecting you to say sorry once I explained it, but you didn’t say sorry you said ‘thank you’,”

Mark muttered “oh well,” after Scott stormed off and Mitch responded to his partner, “whoops”.

The contestants have called their house an “entertainers home” for “cashed up empty nesters like us” in the past.
