For many people, dogs are far more than pets. They are companions, confidants and cherished members of the family.
But as more households juggle busy schedules, longer outings and time away from home, experts say many dogs are struggling with boredom and anxiety while waiting for their owners to return.
Now, an Australian dog behaviour specialist believes he has found a practical solution.
The Enricher is a new home device designed to provide dogs with mental stimulation throughout the day, even when nobody is home.
Created by Grant Shannon, the device uses four timed compartments that open at preset intervals to reveal puzzles, toys or treat-based activities, creating a varied enrichment program that changes from day to day.
The idea is based on a simple principle: dogs need more than food, walks and a comfortable bed. Like people, they benefit from novelty, problem-solving and opportunities to engage their minds.
Research suggests canine anxiety may affect as many as one in every four to six dogs, with separation anxiety and boredom becoming increasingly common in modern households.
“Dog guardians care deeply about their companions,” Mr Shannon says. “The lack of enrichment is not because people don’t care, they care deeply. It is because they have not been shown practical ways to integrate enrichment into their dogs’ lives.”
Mr Shannon brings more than a decade of experience as an animal behaviour consultant and dog trainer to the project. Through Dogs Connect, he has helped introduce wellbeing dogs into schools, hospitals, emergency services and other workplaces across Australia.
The device could prove especially appealing to older Australians with senior dogs, as regular enrichment activities have been linked to reduced anxiety and may help slow mental decline as dogs age.
Australia remains one of the world’s great dog-loving nations, with almost half of households sharing their home with at least one dog.
For owners who feel guilty about leaving a four-legged friend home alone for a few hours, innovations such as The Enricher offer reassurance that stimulation, play and discovery can continue even after the front door closes.
Because for many dogs, a happier day may be just a puzzle away.
