Elton John has celebrated an important personal milestone.
The 79-year-old music legend took to social media on Wednesday to mark 36 years of sobriety.
“36 years sober today. Raising a 0% glass to life. Grateful for every single day,” he captioned the post.
He shared an image of himself smiling at the camera while holding a glass of his own alcohol-free sparkling wine brand, Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, which he founded with his husband David Furnish earlier this year.
The singer reposted the image to his Instagram stories with his 1983 hit, I’m Still Standing.
Fans were quick to congratulate Elton on the achievement, and sharing how he has inspired them in their own sobriety journey.
“Three weeks sober today!! ❤️❤️ hoping for sobriety as commendable as yours,” one person wrote.
“What an inspiration,” another added.
“What an incredible achievement! You’re an inspiration on and off stage,” another added.
The singer has been open about his decision to give up alcohol and other substances, with references to his struggle with addiction in the biopic Rocketman and past interviews.
He also shared his past struggles with drugs and alcohol in a May 2019 interview with Variety.
“The life I was leading, flying on the Starship [his legendary private plane], living in beautiful houses, buying things left, right and center — it was not a normal life, not the sort of life I came from anyway,” he told the outlet at the time.
“I lost complete touch with that. I vowed when I did change my life that that would never happen again.”
“There were times I was having chest pains or staying up for three days at a time,” he continued.
“I used to have spasms and be found on the floor and they’d put me back to bed and half an hour later I’d be doing the same. It’s crazy.”
