Nicole Kidman has shared she is exploring a new direction beyond acting, revealing plans to train as a death doula following the loss of her mother.

The 58-year-old Oscar-winning actress spoke about the decision during a recent appearance at the University of San Francisco, where she reflected on her mother Janelle Ann Kidman’s passing in September 2024.

Kidman said the experience highlighted a gap in support for families during end-of-life care.

“As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide,” she said.

“Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’”

“So that’s part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning.”

A death doula, also known as an end-of-life doula, provides non-medical support and comfort to people with life-limiting illnesses, helping them understand their choices and offering emotional care.

The role is still emerging in Australia, but is becoming more widely recognised as part of broader palliative care support.

Kidman, known for her award-winning performances in films including Moulin Rouge!, has spoken openly about her grief since her mother’s death.

In March, she shared a tribute on what would have been her mother’s birthday, writing: “Remembering my Mumma on her birthday. Always in my heart Mumma.”

The actress, who has four children and a large extended family, said her personal experience had shaped her interest in offering comfort to others facing similar moments.
