A young police officer shot during the Bondi terror attack is recovering after surgeons made the unexpected discovery of a benign tumour behind his eye while treating his gunshot injuries.
Constable Jack Hibbert, 22, was one of the first officers to respond to the Bondi attack in December last year, where he was shot multiple times.
Following the attack he was rushed to hospital in critical condition after shrapnel from the bullet tore into the nerves behind his eye.
During surgery following the incident, medical staff discovered the tumour behind one of his eyes.
The 22-year-old underwent further surgery at the end of April to remove the tumour and is now recovering in hospital.
His family said in a statement that he was doing well following the procedure, after enduring months of serious medical challenges.
Constable Hibbert had only been serving as a police officer for four months when the attack occurred.
Since the shooting, the community has rallied around the young officer and his family, with an online fundraiser raising more than $120,000 to support his recovery.
A separate fundraiser organised by NSW Police Legacy, which assists injured officers and their families, has raised more than $550,000.
