A Gold Coast couple has sparked widespread attention and backlash after sharing a video that showed quite the controversial hack to to get the top parking spot at the beach.
In the clip, the pair, Bonnie and Kodi, are seen using a plastic cup filled with sand to obscure a yellow line while parked near Coolangatta Beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast, temporarily preventing the line from being visible to parking inspectors.
The couple later clarified they did not stay in the spot, filming the video before relocating to a legal parking space.
“We were actually just dropping off the surf boards,” Kodi told 7NEWS.
Responding to criticism online, the pair said the video was intended as a joke rather than a serious attempt to evade enforcement.
“Look the Karens are going to hate it, but we were just joking around,” Kodi said.
“Bit of Aussie larrikinism, hey.”
Under Queensland road rules, parking on a continuous yellow line is prohibited and can result in a $333 fine.
The video has since attracted more than 16 million views on TikTok, with some viewers raising concerns that the behaviour could obstruct emergency vehicles.
Others, however, praised the clip, describing the stunt as “genius” and “gold”.
