Sarah Abo is turning the page on one of the biggest chapters of her television career, with the much-loved journalist announcing she will leave Channel Nine and the Today show at the end of the year.

And after almost four years of very early mornings, major interviews, breaking news and plenty of laughs along the way, the 39-year-old says she is ready to see what comes next.

Abo, who is currently on maternity leave after welcoming her first child, son Sonny, will depart Nine to pursue new opportunities, bringing to an end a tenure that saw her become one of the network’s most recognisable faces.

She joined Today as Karl Stefanovic’s co-host in January 2023, stepping into the seat vacated by Allison Langdon when she moved to A Current Affair.

It was a formidable assignment, but Abo quickly made the role her own.

Already an accomplished journalist and 60 Minutes reporter, she brought serious news credentials to breakfast television while proving equally comfortable with the lighter, unpredictable moments that come with three-and-a-half hours of live TV each morning.

Nine’s executive director of news and current affairs Fiona Dear praised Abo’s contribution, saying she had brought “warmth, energy and first-class journalism” to Today, along with the “sharp journalistic instincts” required to handle one of television’s most demanding jobs.

But it is what has happened away from the television studio that has made 2026 particularly significant for Abo.

Earlier this year, she shared the deeply personal news that she and husband Cyrus Moran were expecting their first child following a difficult IVF journey and two miscarriages.

Abo spoke openly about the experience and the fear that accompanied her pregnancy, telling viewers it had been a “bumpy ride” to reach that point. Her maternity leave then began earlier than expected in July after doctors ordered her to rest while being monitored for high blood pressure.

Two months ago, Sonny arrived.

Now, motherhood has helped put the next stage of her life into perspective.

“Becoming a mum has heralded a new chapter and sharing that with our audience has been truly special,” Abo said in her farewell statement.

“As many of you know, this has been a significant journey for my family and will continue to be my greatest achievement.”

Abo also paid tribute to the viewers who had welcomed her into their homes each morning and to the colleagues who had shared those famously brutal breakfast television hours with her.

She reflected proudly on a Nine career that has taken her around the world, chasing stories and interviewing people from all walks of life for both Today and 60 Minutes.

And while her departure comes amid considerable change at Today, Abo’s own farewell feels less like an ending than a well-earned chance to choose what comes next.

She leaves with Nine publicly praising her journalism, the affection of colleagues and viewers, and a CV that proves she can move effortlessly between hard news, current affairs and live television.

Most importantly, she leaves at a moment when life has given her something much bigger than television to celebrate.

Whatever Sarah Abo’s next professional chapter looks like, she heads towards it after an impressive run at Nine – and with a very special new little person alongside her.
