Guy Sebastian hit with a setback

Guy Sebastian has been hit with another setback after being forced to push back his tour dates after testing positive to Covid.

He announced on Thursday evening that he had tested positive to the infectious disease amid his courtroom battle with his former manager.

"I'm so gutted to release this statement," he wrote in a statement on Instagram.

"With regret, the upcoming Guy Sebastian Cairns T.R.U.T.H show scheduled for Tuesday 10th May and the upcoming Townsville show, scheduled for the 11th May will be rescheduled due to Guy Sebastian testing positive to Covid-19 on the afternoon of Thursday 5th May.

"I was so looking forward to performing in Cairns & Townsville next week. I am so sorry to disappoint my fans and I promise to do something even more special once I'm able to perform as a thank you for your patience and understanding."

Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets with emails being sent out informing concertgoers about the postponed dates.

The remainder of the tour will continue as scheduled from May 13 on the Gold Coast.

The former Australian Idol winner began his evidence in Sydney's Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday against Titus Emanuel Day, 49, who allegedly defrauded the entertainer on 50 occasions.

Titus has pled not guilty to the 50 charges, which include fraudulently embezzling money allegedly owed to Sebastian through royalties and performance fees, as well as 50 seperate counts of larceny and stealing.

The Crown alleges that Day - who managed Sebastian through his company 6 Degrees between 2009 and 2017 - embezzled Sebastian out of almost $900,000 between 2013 and 2020.

After being introduced to Day following his win on Australian Idol, Sebastian signed with his management company, and formed a trusting relationship with his new manager.

"One of the benefits of my manager was he was a contract lawyer so I trusted that if he put something in front of me he wouldn't do so unless it was ready to be signed,” Sebastian said in court.

The court was told no contract was ever formalised between Day and Sebastian, but after the "acrimonious and hostile" break-up between the pair, the singer later discovered "anomalies" related to royalty payments never remitted to him by 6 Degrees.

The trial between Titus Day and Guy Sebastian continues.

Images: Instagram

I heard from JL [Justin Langer] yesterday and we've been in touch over the last few months.

"Hopefully I can get there."

However, Barty is aware that a potential injury flare up could impact her chances at Wimbledon.

"I really need to look after it, particularly in the first few days.

"We pulled out of the doubles [in Birmingham] to give it the best chance to be ready for singles.

"It's about rest, time off court and then monitoring how many balls I do hit when I am on court.

"It's just certain times of the year I need to be careful."

Olivia Newton-John reveals new health setback

After a number of health complications, Olivia Newton-John is on the road to recovery as she battles stage 4 breast cancer.

Speaking to People magazine in a new interview, the 70-year-old has revealed how she has spent the last six months recovering from a fractured pelvis due to cancer weakening her bones.

Newton-John only discovered the fracture in September, after she felt excruciating pain during a cancer walk for her Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, which is where she received treatment.

The Grease star was forced to celebrate her 70th birthday in hospital rather than the extravagant party that was originally planned in Los Angeles.

“There were all these things I was going to do for my birthday,” the actress and singer admitted. “But God had other plans.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Olivia Newton-john (@therealonj) on Apr 1, 2017 at 9:51am PDT

However, despite the drastic change of plans, the Australian-born star was surrounded by her family and friends as they held an intimate dinner in the hospital ward.

These challenges are enough to make anyone feel defeated, but Newton-John still remains positive.

“I never say, ‘Why me.’ I was like, ‘Wow, I’m in my hospital that I’d dreamt of building for people to have rest and peace and there I was getting the best care,’” she said. “It was quite magical.”

This is Newton-John’s third battle with cancer, with the deadly disease spreading to her sacrum. Her first diagnosis was in 1992 and then in 2013.

She has chosen to take the natural route when it comes to treatment, as she uses a combination of herbs, oral medication prescribed by her oncologist, and medical cannabis.

Despite these trying times, she revealed to the magazine that it’s her support system – comprised of her daughter Chloe Lattanzi, family and friends – that have helped provide her with the strength to push through it.

In January, Newton-John was in the centre of a tabloid frenzy as certain publications reported that she was dying and only had a few “weeks” to live.

The four-time Grammy award winner addressed the morbid rumours through a video where she revealed that she was doing just fine.

But speaking to People, Newton-John said the entire ordeal was hard on her loved ones.

“My friends were calling and believing this stuff. I had to say, ‘You really think if it was that bad you wouldn’t know?’”

And progress is being made, as once upon a time the star would be forced to use a walker to get from A to B, then a cane, and now “nothing”.

Opening up on the status of her current health, the triple threat star said: “I’m feeling good, just getting stronger.”

Jamie Oliver suffers another setback

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is pulling the plug on his Jamie food magazine nearly 10 years after it started.

It is the third blow to Oliver’s empire this year after he was forced to shut some of his Jamie's Italian restaurants and then close down his Union Jacks pizza chain.

Circulation of Jamie magazine in the UK has also plummeted from more than 75,000 in 2009 to just 47,000 this year.

Industry insider believe the magazine, which began in 2008, was failing to attract enough advertisers to make it profitable. The wide availability of recipes on the internet has also led to a fall in sales.

In January the 42-year-old closed six of his 42 Jamie's Italian restaurants across the UK, blaming tough conditions and rising Brexit cost pressures.

Two months later Oliver shut the last of his four Union Jacks pizza restaurants, which launched in 2011.

A spokesman for magazine group Hearst, which publishes Jamie magazine, said: “After careful consideration, the Jamie Oliver Group has taken the decision to close Jamie magazine to focus on serving its audience needs via digital platforms.

“We will work closely with the Jamie team to ensure we deliver a well-managed closure process.”

A spokesperson for Jamie Oliver Group said: “We are incredibly proud of Jamie Magazine, which won International Consumer Media Brand of the Year in 2015, and our hugely talented editorial staff.

“We've conducted extensive research into our audience needs and while Jamie's books are more popular than ever - 5 Ingredients Quick & Easy Food is the fastest selling Jamie book - our audience is increasingly also looking to digital platforms to find content.

“This behaviour shift presents a continued opportunity to develop exciting and innovative ways to deliver trusted food content to our engaged audience, at scale.

“With thousands of recipes now available online, jamieoliver.com takes the essence of the magazine - tried and tested recipes that always work, together with full nutritional information to help our audience make better food choices.:

The announcement comes after Jamie was involved in a war of words with fellow celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

Dealing with setbacks in retirement

Megan Giles, Retirement Transition Consultant, supports those approaching retirement to successfully transition and create a retirement they will love to live!

You’ve done everything right in planning for retirement. You have saved, seen a financial planner, and have a good sense of how you are going to spend your days. You intend to spend more time with the grandchildren, perhaps making up for the time you were not able to spend with your own children. And then you receive the phone call. Your daughter-in-law has been offered a fantastic opportunity in Germany and the family will be relocating for the next five years.

Or perhaps you had fabulous plans for a nomadic lifestyle – to spend the summers at home and the winters up north on the Queensland beaches. And then your partner receives a major health scare and you have no idea what that will mean for your travel plans.

You retirement plans are suddenly thrown into a tailspin and you have no idea what to do.

A common response to tough circumstances is to blame others “if he hadn’t insisted on work so hard, this never would have happened” or “she is only doing this because she doesn’t trust us with the grandchildren”. The blame response, however, is not helpful and can have a negative impact on the people closest to us.

Before you panic, however, recognise that setbacks happen to everyone no matter how successful, kind or giving they are. Think JK Rowling who went from depending on welfare to becoming one of the most successful authors and richest and generous women in the world, or Winston Churchill who was defeated in every public office election he nominated for until becoming Prime Minister at age 62.

“Breakdowns can create breakthroughs. Things fall apart so things can fall together.” – Unknown.

Things do not always go to plan in retirement or in life more broadly, and so before you make any rash decisions, take a moment to reflect and think about the advice that you would give to someone in your shoes. So often we are able to offer other people wonderful advice but struggle to hear it ourselves.

What are some of those words of wisdom?

1. Give yourself time to process what has happened. Reflect not only how you are feeling, the true emotions you are experiencing, rather than insisting on remaining stoic, and what support or information do you need in order to make an informed decision?

2. Avoid panic. Do not respond immediately if you don’t have to. The worst thing you can do is say something that you regret, for example blaming your daughter-in-law for ‘taking’ your grandchildren away. Wait until you are ready to have a rational, strength-based conversation

3. Control the controllables. Focus your energy only on the things you can control and let the rest slide. It is exhausting when you are constantly battling the things that can’t be. Rather than, e.g. becoming resentful because a health scare may not allow you to take that extensive trip, focus on what is possible such as short weekends away, or modifying the trip to fly rather than drive

4. Step out of your comfort zone. Confront your setback and recognise that this is the reality that you face right now. Rather than become a victim of circumstance, take action to overcome it or adapt positively to a different reality.

Most importantly and if possible, take the time to proactively plan for potential setbacks in retirement. Rather that sweeping your fears under the rug and hoping that they won’t eventuate, discuss them with your significant other(s), however unpleasant, and then create a contingency plan. They may include events such as the loss of your spouse, unexpected financial hardship or a family member requiring significant care. The power of having a contingency plan in place is that should be worst case scenario occur, you have a plan in place and you will not need to make difficult decisions during an emotional time. Instead you can focus your energy on the most important tasks at hand and take positive steps forward.

The key to success for the people who work with Megan is structured planning, looking beyond the finances, harnessing opportunities, informed decision making and tailored action.
