You’re probably brushing your teeth wrong – here are four tips for better dental health

So why do those of us following these instructions find we sometimes need a filling when we visit the dentist? The truth is, there’s a little more to preventing tooth decay than these guidelines suggest. Here’s what you need to know.</p> <h2>Brush up on your skills</h2> <p>How you brush makes a big difference. The mechanical act of brushing removes the very sticky dental plaque – a mixture of bacteria, their acids and sticky byproducts and food remnants. It forms naturally on teeth immediately after you’ve eaten but doesn’t get nasty and start to cause damage to the teeth until it reaches a certain stage of maturity. The exact amount of time this takes isn’t known but is at least more than 12 hours.</p> <p>Bacteria consume sugar and, as a byproduct, produce acids which dissolve mineral out of the teeth, leaving microscopic holes we can’t see. If the process isn’t stopped and they aren’t repaired, these can become big, visible cavities.</p> <p>Taking two minutes to brush your teeth is a good target for removing plaque and you should brush at night and one other time daily. Brushing frequently stops the bacteria developing to a stage where the species which produce the most acid can become established.</p> <p>Electric toothbrushes can be <a href="https://www.cochrane.org/CD002281/ORAL_poweredelectric-toothbrushes-compared-to-manual-toothbrushes-for-maintaining-oral-health">more effective than manual brushing</a> and a small toothbrush head helps to reach awkward areas in the mouth, while medium-textured bristles help you clean effectively without causing harm to gums and teeth. The main thing, however, is to get brushing!</p> <h2>Use fluoride toothpaste and disclosing tablets</h2> <p>Most of the benefit from brushing comes from toothpaste. The key ingredient is fluoride, which evidence shows <a href="https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD002278/full#CD002278-abs-0003">prevents tooth decay</a>. Fluoride replaces lost minerals in teeth and also makes them stronger.</p> <p>For maximum benefit, <a href="https://www.cochrane.org/CD007868/ORAL_comparison-between-different-concentrations-of-fluoride-toothpaste-for-preventing-tooth-decay-in-children-and-adolescents">use toothpaste with 1350-1500 ppmF</a> – that’s concentration of fluoride in parts per million – to prevent tooth decay.</p> <p>Check your toothpaste’s concentration by reading the ingredients on the back of the tube. <a href="https://theconversation.com/childrens-toothpaste-the-facts-80508">Not all children’s toothpastes are strong enough</a> for them to gain maximum benefit. Your dentist may prescribe higher strength fluoride toothpaste based on their assessment of your or your child’s risk of tooth decay.</p> <p>Plaque is difficult to see because it is whitish, like your teeth. Disclosing tablets are available in supermarkets and chemists and they make plaque more visible, showing areas you may have missed when brushing.</p> <h2>Spit, don’t rinse</h2> <p>At night, you produce less saliva than during the day. Because of this, your teeth have less protection from saliva and are more vulnerable to acid attacks. That’s why it’s important to remove food from your teeth before bed so plaque bacteria can’t feast overnight. Don’t eat or drink anything except water <a href="https://www.sign.ac.uk/assets/sign138.pdf">after brushing at night</a>. This also gives fluoride the longest opportunity to work.</p> <p>Once you’ve brushed, don’t rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash – you’re washing away the fluoride! This can be a difficult habit to break, but can <a href="https://www.sign.ac.uk/assets/sign138.pdf">reduce tooth decay by up to 25%</a>.</p> <h2>No more than four ‘sugar hits’</h2> <p>Intrinsic sugars are found naturally in foods like fruit and they are far less likely to cause tooth decay than added or <a href="https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/nutrition/sugar-salt-and-fat/free-sugars">free sugars</a>. Free sugars are generally those added to foods by manufacturers but also include honey, syrup and fruit juices.</p> <p>These are all easy for bacteria to consume, metabolise and produce acids from. However, it can be difficult to tell which are the worst sugars for teeth. For example, although normal amounts of fruit are fine, fruit juices have sugar liberated from the plant cells and heavy consumption can cause decay.</p> <p><a href="http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/guidelines/sugars_intake/en/">The World Health Organization</a> and <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/food-and-diet/how-much-sugar-is-good-for-me/">NHS</a> recommend free sugars should ideally make up less than 5% of your daily calorie intake. So what does this look like? For adults and children over about 11 years old, this is around 30g – about eight teaspoons – of sugar daily.</p> <p>A 330ml can of Coke has <a href="https://www.coca-cola.co.uk/drinks/coca-cola/coca-cola">35g of sugar</a>. The <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phe.c4lfoodsmart&amp;hl=en_GB">change4life app</a> is helpful to track how much sugar you consume in your diet.</p> <p>Although not as important as how much, how often you eat sugar also matters. Simple carbohydrates like sugar are easier for bacteria to digest than proteins or complex carbohydrates. Bacteria produce acids after they metabolise sugar which causes demineralisation.</p> <p>Fortunately, through the actions of fluoride toothpaste and the remineralising effects of saliva, your teeth can recover from the early stages of these attacks. It’s like having a set of scales – trying to keep the balance between sugars on one side, fluoride toothpaste and cleaning on the other.</p> <p>Typically, your teeth can be exposed to four “sugar hits” – episodes of sugar intake – daily without irreversible damage to the teeth. Why not try counting how many sugary hits you have a day? This includes biscuits, cups of sugary tea or coffee and other snacks with refined carbohydrates like crisps. A simple way of cutting down would be to stop putting sugar in hot drinks and limiting snacking.</p> <p>Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, spit don’t rinse, eat and drink nothing after brushing, and don’t have sugar more than four times daily. Eating leafy greens could be better for oral health than using mouthwash

<p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/mia-cousins-burleigh-1201153">Mia Cousins Burleigh</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-the-west-of-scotland-1385">University of the West of Scotland</a> and <a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/siobhan-paula-moran-1506183">Siobhan Paula Moran</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-the-west-of-scotland-1385">University of the West of Scotland</a></em></p> <p>Over half the adult population in the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26052472">UK and US</a> have gum disease. Typical treatments include <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-61912-4">mouthwash</a> and in severe cases, <a href="https://www.magonlinelibrary.com/doi/abs/10.12968/vetn.2017.8.10.542">antibiotics</a>. These treatments have side effects, such as dry mouth, the development of <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30967854/">antimicrobial resistance</a> and increased <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-61912-4">blood pressure</a>.</p> <p>But research has indicated that a molecule called <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">nitrate</a>, which is found in leafy green vegetables, has fewer side effects and offers greater benefits for oral health. And it could be used as a natural alternative for treating oral disease.</p> <p>Inadequate brushing and flossing leads to the build up of <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">dental plaque</a>, a sticky layer of bacteria, on the surface of teeth and gums. Plaque causes tooth decay and gum disease. Sugary and acidic foods, dry mouth, and smoking can also contribute to bad breath, tooth decay, and gum infections.</p> <p>The two main types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. <a href="https://www.spandidos-publications.com/10.3892/etm.2019.8381">Gingivitis</a> causes redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums. <a href="https://www.spandidos-publications.com/10.3892/etm.2019.8381">Periodontitis</a> is a more advanced form of gum disease, causing damage to the soft tissues and bones supporting the teeth.</p> <p>Periodontal disease can therefore, lead to tooth loss and, when bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream, can also contribute to the development of <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/bdjteam2015163">systemic disorders</a> such as cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.</p> <h2>Leafy greens may be the secret</h2> <p>Leafy greens and root vegetables are bursting with <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666149723000312">vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants</a> – and it’s no secret that a diet consisting of these vegetables is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight, boosting the immune system, and preventing <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/2048004016661435">heart disease, cancer and diabetes.</a> The multiple health benefits of leafy greens are partly because spinach, lettuce and beetroots are brimming with <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">nitrate</a>, which can be reduced to nitric oxide by nitrate-reducing bacteria inside the mouth.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7zrRlMGeBes?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe><figcaption><span class="caption">Popeye knew a thing or two about the health benefits of eating leafy greens. Boomerang Official, 2017.</span></figcaption></figure> <p>Nitric oxide is known to <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0006295222004191">lower blood pressure</a> and improve <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243755#:%7E:text=Nitrate%2Drich%20beetroot%20juice%20offsets,healthy%20male%20runners%20%7C%20PLOS%20ONE">exercise performance</a>. However, in the mouth, it helps to prevent the overgrowth of bad bacteria and reduces <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243755#:%7E:text=Nitrate%2Drich%20beetroot%20juice%20offsets,healthy%20male%20runners%20%7C%20PLOS%20ONE">oral acidity</a>, both of which can cause gum disease and tooth decay.</p> <p>As part of our research on nitrate and oral health, <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243755#:%7E:text=Nitrate%2Drich%20beetroot%20juice%20offsets,healthy%20male%20runners%20%7C%20PLOS%20ONE">we studied competitive athletes</a>. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9839431/">Athletes are prone to gum disease</a> due to high intake of carbohydrates – which can cause inflammation of the gum tissues – stress, and dry mouth from breathing hard during training.</p> <p>Our study showed that beetroot juice (containing approximately 12 <a href="https://www.nursingtimes.net/students/an-easy-guide-to-mmols-09-02-2012/">millimole</a> of nitrate) protected their teeth from acidic sports drinks and carbohydrate gels during exercise – suggesting that nitrate could be used as a prebiotic by athletes to reduce the risk of tooth decay.</p> <p>Nitrate offers a lot of promise as an oral health <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">prebiotic</a>. Good oral hygiene and a nitrate rich diet could be the key to a healthier body, a vibrant smile and disease-free gums. This is good news for those most at risk of oral health deterioration such as <a href="https://www.news-medical.net/health/Periodontitis-and-Pregnancy.aspx">pregnant women</a>, and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8771712/">the elderly</a>.</p> <p>In the UK, antiseptic mouthwashes containing <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-61912-4">chlorhexidine</a> are commonly used to treat dental plaque and gum disease. Unfortunately, these mouthwashes are a blunderbuss approach to oral health, as they indiscriminately remove both good and bad bacteria and increase oral acidity, which can cause disease.</p> <p>Worryingly, early research also indicates that chlorhexidine may contribute to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30967854/">antimicrobial resistance</a>. Resistance occurs when bacteria and fungi survive the effects of one or more <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4768623/">antimicrobial drugs</a> due to repeated exposure to these treatments. Antimicrobial resistance is a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02724-0/fulltext">global health concern</a>, predicted to cause 10 million deaths yearly by the year 2050.</p> <p>In contrast, dietary nitrate is more targeted. Nitrate eliminates disease-associated bacteria, reduces oral acidity and creates a balanced <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2944498/">oral microbiome</a>. The oral microbiome refers to all the microorganisms in the mouth. Nitrate offers exciting potential as an <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">oral health prebiotic</a>, which can be used to prevent disease onset or limit disease progression.</p> <h2>How many leafy greens for pearly whites?</h2> <p>So how much should we consume daily? As a rule of thumb, a generous helping of spinach, kale or beetroot at mealtimes contains about 6-10 mmol of nitrate and offers immediate health benefits.</p> <p>Work we have done with our collaborators has shown that treating <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-69931-x">plaque samples</a> from periodontal disease patients with 6.5 mmol of nitrate increased healthy bacteria levels and reduced acidity.</p> <p>For example, consuming <a href="https://aap.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/JPER.20-0778">lettuce juice</a> for two weeks reduced gum inflammation and increased healthy bacteria levels in patients with gum disease.</p> <p>Growing evidence suggests that nitrate is a cornerstone of oral health. Crunching on a portion of vegetables at mealtimes can help to prevent or treat oral disease and keeps the mouth fresh and healthy.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. 5 things we all do wrong in the shower

<p>While showering every day keeps us smelling fresh, it actually disturbs the natural bacteria on our skin and strips it of the oils that keep it supple. In fact, many shower habits can actually be very unhygienic. Experts reveal what we’re doing wrong, and what to do instead.</p> <p><strong>1.  Showering everyday </strong></p> <p>The University of California found that too much washing can actually be bad for you, because it strips away beneficial bugs that the body uses to help ward off infections. Apparently, if we simply wash our hands and below the belt regularly we can skip a full shower every day.</p> <p><strong>2.  Showering for too long </strong></p> <p>Water is an irritant, so the longer you’re in there, the more irritated and dry your skin will become. Oil from the sebaceous glands hydrate the skin, so showering for too long strips it of moisture.</p> <p><strong>3. Rubbing soap on your whole body</strong></p> <p>Soap dislodges dirt and oil from the body, allowing water to wash it away. But the skin on the arms and legs doesn't contain a lot of oil, so cleaning them with soap just makes them dry.  Instead, simply focus on the armpits, buttocks, groin and feet</p> <p><strong>4.  Letting the shower water blast over your face </strong></p> <p>A hot shower can cause and exacerbate fragile capillary networks in the cheeks, leading to unattractive, visible capillary networks and worsened impaired skin conditions, experts warn.</p> <p><strong>5.  Using a pouf </strong></p> <p>Poufs and loofahs are a haven for bacteria — the dead skin cells they scrub so well from our body get caught up in the nooks where bacteria can feed on them. Also, because poufs take time to dry and may well retain dead skin cells, it’s a potential source of infection. To keep it clean, wet your pouf and put it on a medium heat in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.</p> <p>How would you feel about skipping your daily shower, like one of these tips suggests? Touch your dogs mouth</h4> <p>Have a small dog? Spread the towel on your lap so your pet can sit during the cleaning. For big dogs, lay the towel on the floor and kneel next to your pup. The towel becomes your dog’s cue that it’s teeth-cleaning time.</p> <p>Start with petting your pup, paying particular attention to the outside of its mouth and lips. If it’ll allow it and you feel comfortable, let it mouth your fingers. Even better, slip a finger inside its cheek to stroke the sides of its teeth. It doesn’t need to open its jaws at all. Its tongue keeps the inside surface of its teeth clean, so you only need to take care of the outside surface. Do this for five minutes and offer a treat each time your dog lets you stroke its gums or touch a tooth.</p> <p>Repeat this step once or twice a day for three to five days. After the dog accepts your handling of its mouth, move to the next step.</p> <h4>3. Flavour the toy</h4> <p><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial; font-size: 16px; background-color: #ffffff;">Spread dog toothpaste on a non-fabric toy and let your pet lick it off. Many dogs enjoy the paste-like treat. It has ingredients that help clean teeth even without brushing, so that’s a great first step. You want to associate the toy with the yummy flavour.</span></p> <h4>4. Prop open the dogs mouth</h4> <p>If your dog wants to take the toy into its mouth, let it. But use your hand to hold its mouth closed around the toy. That way, the flavoured toy it holds and enjoys also props open its jaws just enough for you to clean its teeth. Spend about five minutes playing with the toy, taking it from your dog to add paste, and then letting your dog hold the toy while you grasp its muzzle. Repeat this step once or twice a day for several days in a row.</p> <p>Don’t let your dog swipe the toy away to chew. Reserve this special toy for teeth cleaning so your pet only gets the yummy paste and other treats for this purpose. When it acts excited at the sight of the towel, toy and paste, move on to the next step.</p> <h4>5. Prep the applicator </h4> <p>Whether you’re using a finger toothbrush, gauze pad or a washcloth, you’ll want to spread dog toothpaste onto the brushing material. You won’t need a lot of paste, so just add enough to cover the end of your finger.</p> <h4>6. Clean teeth on one side</h4> <p>With one hand wrapped around your dog’s muzzle as it holds the toothpaste-coated toy, use the toothpaste-covered applicator to wipe the outside of its teeth on one side of its mouth. Do the top jaw first, and if your dog is still fine with it, finish with the bottom teeth on the same side. You don’t need to scrub – simply wipe the paste from side to side.</p> <p>Release its muzzle and remove the toy. The dog will lick its lips and savour the paste you’ve left on its teeth. Quit for the day, after offering your pup a few more treats for being such a good dog.</p> <h4>7. Clean teeth on the other side </h4> <p>The next day, repeat the previous step. This time, you’ll wipe the teeth on the other side of your dog’s mouth. Remember, there’s no need to clean the inside of the teeth since the dog’s tongue keeps those surfaces clean.</p> <p>Poking inside its mouth also risks an accidental bite should his jaws slip off the toy. Just wipe the outside of the teeth.</p> <p>Always quit before your dog asks you to stop; it’ll leave your pup wanting more. Praise and treat generously.</p> <h4>8. Make sure every tooth is clean</h4> <p>After two or three days of one-sided teeth cleanings, your dog should understand the process. Hopefully, it also looks forward to this teeth-cleaning routine. Now it’s time to graduate to cleaning all of the teeth at once. This shouldn’t take more than five minutes, including preparation time. If possible, brush daily.</p> <h4>9. Add a dental rinse</h4> <p>In between brushes, you can add a dental rinse to your dog’s drinking water. 12 ‘healthy’ hygiene habits that are actually bad for you

<p><strong>Cleaning out your ears with cotton buds</strong></p> <p>Some people swear on cotton buds to dig out ear gunk, but medical experts will warn you not to try it. And for good reason – those seemingly harmless cotton swabs have caused countless catastrophes, from punctured eardrums and ear infections to even hearing loss. According to audiologist, Brande Plotnick, the ear canal doesn’t even need to be “cleaned.” Enough water enters the ear canal during showers to naturally slough away wax that has accumulated.</p> <p><strong>Bubble baths/bath bombs</strong></p> <p>Soaking in scented suds seems like the perfect way to unwind after a long day, but you may just find yourself with irritated skin and a nasty yeast infection. The fragrances and harsh detergents inside your favourite bath bombs can strip protective oils from the vagina and mess with the natural pH balance of the skin. Dr Jen Gunter tells Safe Bee that bubble baths increase your odds for uncomfortable dryness, vaginal infections, and even bladder infections.</p> <p><strong>Douching</strong></p> <p>Gynaecologists everywhere agree that douching isn’t exactly recommended for your vaginal health. Wendie A. Howland, principal of Howland Health Consulting, tells Reader’s Digest that douching disturbs the normal pH and washes out beneficial bacteria, leading to an array of possible infections. A study from Environmental Health even found that douching products increase your exposure to harmful chemicals called phthalates, which can disrupt your hormones, increase your risk of chronic disease, and lead to reproductive problems down the line.</p> <p><strong>Hand sanitiser</strong></p> <p>If you’re a habitual pumper, you may actually be doing more harm to your health than good. Triclosan, a synthetic compound found in hand sanitiser, is a poor (and dangerous) replacement for soap and water. Triclosan has been linked to disrupted hormonal development, a reduction in bacterial resistance and an increase in allergies. According to the Australian Department of Health, it can also irritate the eyes and skin.</p> <p><strong>Air dryers</strong></p> <p>Sure, air dryers are better for the planet than paper towels, but research from the Mayo Clinic shows that paper towels easily trump electric dryers when it comes to personal hygiene. Electric air dryers fail at wiping away the leftover bacteria after washing, and even worse, they can literally spread it to the entire room, creating a contagious mist that contains many types of faecal bacteria. This reach is pretty powerful – studies found a substantial number of airborne bacteria within a radius of approximately two metres from the user.</p> <p><strong>Relaxing in the shower</strong></p> <p>There’s nothing like lingering in a long, hot shower, especially first thing in the morning. But is it good for your skin? Dr Alan J. Parks warns that hot showers strip protective oils from your skin, so you should always keep them as short as you can. Better yet, take them at night – hot showers are actually most beneficial at night, according to science. The cooling process that happens afterward slows down the body’s metabolic activities (like digestion, breathing, and heart rate), making for an easier sleep transition.</p> <p><strong>Washing your hair every day</strong></p> <p>While most of us have been conditioned (pun intended) to rinse and repeat ad infinitum, your locks may be paying a toll. Washing your hair on a daily basis strips away the natural oils that the hair needs, leading to dry, brittle locks, even if you have oily hair.</p> <p><strong>Moisturising too much</strong></p> <p>If you have dry, itchy skin, it seems natural to want to slather on the lotion every chance you get. But this may not always be the smartest alternative. According to the experts at Garnier, applying excessive moisturiser at night can create a tolerance, which trains the skin to produce less natural emollient, making it even drier in the long run. This results in a vicious cycle where your skin is no longer producing necessary nutrients, which only causes you to moisturise more. To prevent the problem, apply just a thin coat of moisturiser or try using an oil-free balm instead.</p> <p><strong>Brushing your teeth right after a meal</strong></p> <p>Sticklers for oral hygiene may make a dash for the toothbrush after every meal, but that’s a mistake. That’s because certain foods, especially those containing citric acid, can weaken tooth enamel, and brushing too soon after eating damages the enamel in its already weakened state. Mayo Clinic recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after a meal so saliva can neutralise the acid in your mouth and strengthen the enamel on those chompers.</p> <p><strong>Exfoliating too much</strong></p> <p>You may feel like you’re taking extra good care of your skin with frequent scrubs, but in reality, you could be damaging your epidermis (the outermost layer of your face), stripping the pores of their much-needed barrier against the environment. According to Dermatology Alliance, your glands produce more oil to compensate, and as the skin fluctuates between too dry and too oily, it gets stuck in a cycle of imbalance. Ditch the scrub and switch to chemical exfoliants that are free of parabens and safe to use on a weekly basis.</p> <p><strong>Sneezing into your hand</strong></p> <p>Covering your sneeze with your hand is better than sneezing into the abyss, right? Nope. Using your hands and subsequently touching food, money, or other people is a clear recipe for contagion. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most serious respiratory illnesses are spread by touching objects with contaminated hands. The Australian Department of Health advises that you sneeze into your elbow.</p> <p><strong>Spritzing fragrance in underwear</strong></p> <p>Although most people have enough sense not to spray perfume directly into the nether regions, you might try deodorising your underwear instead. The truth is that anything chemical near the genitals can interfere with your natural pH, and it’s likely you’ll be stuck with a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or urinary tract infection (which ironically, all end up causing worse smells than what you started with). "Blatant disregard for hygiene": Man slams Woolworths self-serve checkouts

The surprising step you've been missing from your oral care routine

<p>Three quarters of Australian adults were warned against chewing gum as a child. But recently, Australian dentists have been saying quite the opposite.<br /><br />According to new YouGov data on the chewing habits of Australians, almost a third of Australian adults were told as children that chewing gum was rude, and nearly a quarter were told it was bad for your teeth. But leading dentists say sugarfree gum actually plays a key role in looking after your dental health.<br /><br />In the midst of a global pandemic it would be no surprise some of us are hesitant to keep up regular dental checks.<br /><br />In fact, the ADA's Oral Health Tracker found that just under half (48.8%) of adults surveyed had visited a dentist for a check-up in the last 12 months - a number that is anticipated to get worse as Australians avoid the dentist due to fears of proximity to others, job losses result in people spending less on their health and people are stuck at home eating sugary foods more regularly.<br /><br />Sydney dentist Dr Jalal Khan says there are some simple ways all Australians keep up their oral health even during the COVID-19 pandemic.<br /><br />Dr Khan says more Aussies should consider chewing sugarfree gum after eating or drinking when brushing isn’t possible, because it helps to neutralise plaque acid and maintain tooth enamel.<br /><br />“Oral hygiene and looking after our teeth isn’t something we should do just once or twice a day, in the morning and night, because we eat and snack so frequently throughout the day,” Dr Khan said. “Chewing sugarfree gum helps to fill the gaps between brushing and flossing creating a healthy environment for our teeth.”<br /><br />A recent scientific literature review by King’s College found chewing sugarfree gum could help reduce the incidence and growth of dental caries by up to 28 per cent.<sup>  <br /><br /></sup>Despite being preventable, tooth decay is one of Australia’s most common oral health problems and is on the rise among Australian adults and children. Maintaining good oral health is fundamental to overall health, reduces risk of chronic diseases and improves mental wellbeing.<br /><br />This week, Dr Jalal Khan drilled down into new YouGov research on Australia’s chewing habits to bust some long-held myths about chewing gum:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Bad manners or healthy habit? </strong>- The main reason Aussies don’t chew gum is because they think it’s rude (29% of adults).<br /><br /></li> </ul> <p><br />Dr Khan: “The fact is chewing sugar-free gum is a healthy habit that helps look after your teeth. The act of chewing gum stimulates saliva flow, which clears food particles, and protects the teeth by neutralising any acidity in your meal. Only 17% of Aussie adults chew gum after eating and drinking to look after their teeth.” <br /><br /></p> <ul> <li><strong>Not all gums are equal -</strong> A quarter (25%) of Australian adults avoid chewing gum because they believe it contains sugar.</li> </ul> <p><br />Dr Khan: “Most gum (93%) on the market is sugarfree and endorsed by national dental bodies. I recommend looking for gum that displays the Australian Dental Association or FDI World Dental Federation logos on the back of pack.”<br /><br /></p> <ul> <li><strong>Is there a right (or wrong) time to chew? -</strong> While 17% of adults chew before eating to prevent snacking or over-eating, dentists say chewing after a meal has more benefits.<br /><br /></li> </ul> <p>Dr Khan: “If you are on the go, it’s best to chew gum after you’ve finished a meal to stimulate saliva flow, which clears food particles and protects the teeth by neutralising any acidity in your meal. It’s important to chew for at least 20 minutes as this has been shown to help maintain the enamel on your teeth.”<br /><br /></p> <ul> <li><strong>What happens if you swallow gum? </strong>As children, over half of us (55% of Australian adults) were told that if you swallow gum it stays in your stomach.</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p>Dr Khan: “It’s an old wives’ tale that’s been passed down by each generation. The truth is if you swallow gum it will NOT stay in your stomach. Although chewing gum is not designed to be swallowed, it simply passes through your body’s digestive system after a few days.”</p> <p><strong> </strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Brushing and flossing isn’t enough to maintain fresh breath </strong>- Almost three quarters (74%) of people that chew gum, do it to freshen their breath.</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p>Dr Khan: “Brushing, flossing and chewing gum all help to keep your breath fresh but so does your diet. I’m not just talking about avoiding garlic.<sup>  </sup>Our mouth is the front end of our gut and it’s lined with bacteria. 6 tips for healthy white teeth

<p><strong>1. Go on a white-teeth diet </strong></p> <p>If you’re quaffing red wine and black tea, or smoking cigarettes, expect the results to show up as not-so-pearly whites. Other culprits include colas, gravy, soya sauce and dark juice.</p> <p><strong>2. Chuck away your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every two to three months</strong></p> <p>Otherwise, you’re just transferring bacteria to your mouth. According to dentist Harold Katz, the best way to brush is by placing your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently moving it in a circular motion. Grip the toothbrush like a pencil so you won’t scrub too hard.</p> <p><strong>3. Use a tongue scraper every morning to remove tongue plaque and freshen breath</strong></p> <p>One cause of bad breath is the build-up of bacteria on the tongue, which a daily tongue scraping will help banish. Eat “detergent” foods that are firm or crisp to help clean teeth as you munch</strong></p> <p>Apples are good, as are raw carrots, celery and popcorn. Stay fresh</strong></p> <p>Check by licking your palm and smelling it while it’s wet. If you smell something, it’s time for a sugar-free breath mint. Shopping for mouthwash? Brushing your teeth first and last thing </strong></p> <p>Are the two most crucial times of the day, as saliva which keeps plaque off teeth, dries up at night, so it’s best to have all plaque cleaned off the teeth before sleep. <p>Showering seems to be a pretty straightforward task – turn on the water, lather, clean and rinse. Can you get food poisoning from your tea towel?

<p>Once upon a time it was the good old chopping board that was the major culprit for bacteria in the kitchen. However, a <a href="http://www.abstractsonline.com/pp8/#!/4623/presentation/15470">new study</a> has cited that the common tea towel is another breeding ground for harmful bacteria in your kitchen.</p> <p>Tests on 100 cloth towels were performed by researchers at the University of Mauritius and collected the data from participants over a month.</p> <p>The disturbing results found 49 out of the 100 samples contained bacterial growth, including E. Coli (Escherichia Coli) and MRSA (Staphylococcus Aureus).</p> <p>The research also found that E. Coli was more likely to generate on damp tea towels that had been left to sit, while MRSA bacteria had higher rates of detection in households with non-vegetarian eaters (meat, poultry, seafood etc).</p> <p><img width="400" height="300" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7819491/2-tea-towel.jpg" alt="2 Tea Towel"/></p> <p>Lead author Dr Susheela D. Biranjia-Hurdoyal, a senior lecturer in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Mauritius, said: “The data indicated that unhygienic practices while handling non-vegetarian food could be common in the kitchen.”</p> <p>It was also found that households comprising of large families and those of a lower socio-economic background were prone to having higher rates of bacteria on their tea towels.</p> <p>“Humid towels and multipurpose usage of kitchen towels should be discouraged,” Dr Biranjia-Hurdoyal added.</p> <p>“Bigger families with children and elderly members should be especially vigilant to hygiene in the kitchen.”</p> <p>Symptoms of food poisoning include severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, minor headaches and fever.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

Aussies' filthy oral hygiene habit – are you guilty of this?

<p>New data has revealed that Australians are failing to listen to the advice of dentists and are struggling to maintain dental hygiene.</p> <p>According to Australia’s Oral Health Tracker released earlier this week, more than 90 per cent of adults have experienced decay in their permanent teeth.</p> <p>Surprisingly, only half of adults are brushing their teeth twice a day as recommended.</p> <p>The Oral Health Tracker found that factors such as risky alcohol consumption and smoking are contributing to the poor oral health among adults.</p> <p>The data also discovered alarming levels of tooth decay among children, with three out of four consuming too much sugar.</p> <p>“The evidence shows that one-third of Australia’s five- to six-year-olds have had decay in their baby teeth. This is an unacceptably high rate and puts these children at risk of poor oral health in their development and adult years,” Dr Hugo Sachs, president of the Australian Dental Association, told <a href="http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/national-study-reveals-only-half-of-australians-brush-their-teeth-twice-a-day/news-story/d149925bf73fe4dc9c32a5623493a780" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">news.com.au.</span></strong></a></p> <p>Australia’s Oral Health Tracker was created by dental academics/researchers, clinicians, policy and public health experts, and was released by the ADA.</p> <p>The Tracker sets targets for improving the oral health of children and adults by 2025, to achieve the World Health Organisation’s targets for global prevention and reduction in chronic diseases.</p> <p>Earlier this month, the Royal Children’s Hospital poll found that by early primary school one in four children need a tooth filling. One in 10 needed a tooth pulled out because of decay and one in 20 required a hospital visit to treat a decayed tooth.</p> <p>Dr Sachs explained that poor oral health links to a range of diseases in adulthood, so it is important to ensure the young have good dental hygiene.</p> <p>Sydney dentist Dr Steven Lin has also said that Australians need to focus on nutrition to look after their teeth.</p> <p>Dr Lin told news.com.au that “most adults, and almost no kids, brush and floss properly”.</p> <p>“While it’s a fine way to polish teeth, brushing is like taking a car with a broken engine to the car wash,” he said.</p> <p>“It cleans but it doesn’t address the problem.”</p> <p>Dr Lin highlighted that we need to maintain a diet that contains fats, vitamins D, A and K2 to maintain healthy mouths.</p> <p>“Harmful foods that we eat are what fuels disease in the mouth. Vegetable oils and white flour are refined carbs, so anything with white flour has a very similar metabolic effect to sugar by creating cavities.</p> <p>“Over time, we have stripped out foods that promote healthy teeth — like butter, meats, yolks and full-fat dairy. This is the most hygienic way to dry hands in public restroom

<p>A study looking at different methods of hand-drying in public restrooms has found that single-use paper towels are the most hygienic option, while electric hand dryers spread bacteria around the room.</p> <p>More traditional hand dryers (where you push a button or wave your hands under a sensor to get it going) spray microbes at a level of around 0.9m from the floor, which is a worrying figure when you consider the height of children using the devices.</p> <p>Newer air jet dryers, which are modern and sleek in appearance, and dry hands in seconds, can spray liquid and bacteria up to 1.5m around the room. Have you been washing your hands wrong all this time?

<p>It’s something we do several times a day but that few of us really pay attention to – washing and drying our hands. Whether it’s after a trip to the loo or before preparing food, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23621052" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">a new study</span></strong></a> has found that just 5 per cent of people are washing and drying their hands correctly every time.</p> <p>As reported by <a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170519-does-it-matter-how-you-wash-and-dry-your-hands" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">the BBC</span></strong></a>, the study of over 3,000 people found that staggering 10 per cent left public toilets without washing their hands, and of those who did, 33 per cent didn’t use soap. And this is a problem for all of us, since physical contact (whether person-to-person or person-to-surface) is one of the most common methods of spreading germs and bacteria.</p> <p>Studies have also found that the temperature of the water in which we wash our hands has <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1471-5740.2002.00043.x/full" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">no significant effect</span></strong></a> on the number of remaining bacteria, and that anti-bacterial soap was <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25809180" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">no better</span></strong></a> than regular soap when it comes to killing germs.</p> <p>As for drying your hands afterwards, unless you’re in a hurry and don’t plan on touching anything while leaving the bathroom, wet hands are fine. However, bacteria are spread and picked up <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3538484/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">more easily</span></strong></a> when the hands are wet, so it’s best to dry them if you can.</p> <p>And, the ultimate question – hand dryer or hand towel? Those jet dryers might be fast and effective at drying hands, but <a href="/health/body/2016/04/dyson-hand-dryer-spread-1300-times-more-germs-than-paper-towels/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">a study last year</span></strong></a> found they spread 1,300 times more germs than paper towels, blasting bacteria as far as three metres across the room. <p>Someone’s smile is often one of the first things people notice about a person. But beyond making a good first impression, your mouth can also tell you a lot about your general health.</p> <p>It’s easy to live with certain issues that you may not think are a big deal. But in fact, issues with your teeth and mouth in general need to be attended to pronto, as they can lead to more serious issues down the track if left untreated.</p> <p>So what should you be looking out for?</p> <p><strong>Ulcers</strong></p> <p>Some people seem to be more susceptible to mouth ulcers. They tend to be either linked to stress or just from biting the inside of your mouth or tongue accidentally. If you find you are experiencing them regularly, or they don’t clear up after a few days, it could be worth investigating.</p> <ul> <li>Some people experience ulcers for no reason, or it could be when they are worried, or for women even a symptom of menstruation. They tend to go away on their own after a few days.</li> <li>You may experience ulcers when you have had some dental work done, and there is something like a sharp part of tooth rubbing against the inside of your cheek. It’s also common for people that wear braces or have a plate.</li> <li>Try taking paracetamol and rinsing your mouth out with warm salty water. You can also get some relief by using teething gel, which you can buy from the chemist.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Bad breath</strong></p> <p>If might be something that you notice yourself, or perhaps some kind soul decides to tell you. Bad breath can be a sign of several potential issues.</p> <ul> <li>You may just need a visit to the dentist for a clean and polish, as bad breath can occur when there is some plaque build-up on your teeth.</li> <li>It could be a sign of illness. For instance gum disease, or some people even experience bad breath when they have a sore throat.</li> <li>You may have become a bit too relaxed with your oral hygiene routine. Are you brushing twice a day? Flossing? Using mouthwash?</li> <li>Certain foods and drinks can cause issues for some people. For instance coffee, garlic, onion, tuna. You may just need to get into the habit of keeping a spare toothbrush in your bag, or some gum/mints.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Sore, red gums</strong></p> <p>There is a big range in this area, as some people may experience mild discomfort while others have gums that are so painful they hurt to brush (or even bleed). Often it is a sign of gum disease but it can also be an indicator of other issues such as diabetes.</p> <ul> <li>Be sure to have regular checkups at the dentist if you have any tenderness or redness, as it’s something that is better treated early. If ignored it can lead to gum disease or even loss of teeth.</li> <li>Invest in a good quality toothbrush, or even an electric toothbrush, to ensure you are giving your teeth a thorough clean twice daily.</li> <li>Use sensitive toothpaste if you feel this may help. Especially if you find certain foods or temperatures make it feel worse.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Grinding teeth   </strong>              </p> <p>This can be a sign of stress and can often go unnoticed until your teeth are quite worn, or your jaw becomes sore.</p> <ul> <li>Sit down and think about any potential sources of stress in your life that may need addressing. Writing it down may help.</li> <li>Consider speaking with your dentist if you feel that the issue is causing problems with your teeth or jaw. There are options such as wearing a plate or guard when you are sleeping.</li> </ul>

The frightening truth about oral decay

<p>Oral decay could be the next big threat to Australian over-60s, according to a Rockhampton dentist. Greg More, former Queensland president of the Australian Dental Association, has found an increasing number of aged care patients with poor oral hygiene, which, in severe cases, can lead to early death.</p> <p>“Unfortunately, with the passage of time people are just no longer able to maintain their own mouths in the way that they used to,” Dr Greg Moore told the <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-18/oral-decay-a-time-bomb-for-aging-population-dentist-warns/8191362" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ABC</span></strong></a>. “Someone else needs to do it, and I've got no problem with nursing home staff — they are very heavily overworked as it is, and cleaning someone else's mouth, with natural teeth, is a very difficult process.”</p> <p>According to Dr Moore, a large part of the problem is simply mobility – particularly aged care facilities in more rural areas. “The saddest cases are when people ring me and say, ‘our mother's dentures are just not fitting the way they used to, can you come and tighten them up for me,’” he explains. “I go in there and the reason their dentures don't fit it because the teeth that used to hold their partial dentures are now little black stumps on their gums. At this stage, they're unwell, they're poor anaesthetic risks, they're immobile and they're heavily medicated – it's just a complete medical nightmare.”</p> <p>Adding to the already frightening situation, the soft, sweet foods regularly given to aged care patients are only contributing to decay. And, in most cases, those who have little control over their diet also have little control over their dental health.</p> <p>To combat this, Dr Moore says more aged care homes need to engage regular dental services, though admits this could send the already-expensive care fees further up. “It's the cost of the person's health and wellbeing.
