4 signs your body is trying to tell you something

Have you noticed any odd changes in your body? Perhaps your nails have become more brittle lately, or you’ve started to get cracks on the corners of your mouth. These small signs might seem insignificant, but they are your body’s way of signalling that a change has occurred.

Here are some of the key signs that your body is trying to tell you something:

Burping and indigestion

Find yourself burping or struggling with indigestion more than usual? It could be a sign that you’re low on stomach acid.

If your body is low on stomach acid, you won’t digest foods efficiently, especially those heavy in fat and protein. As digestion slows, food sits in the stomach along with the air you naturally swallow when you eat. The longer food stays in the stomach, the more likely you’ll burp.

Yellow spots around your eyes

Discoloured spots around your eyes and elbows can be a sign that your cholesterol levels are raised. It’s a condition known as xanthelasma, which can be your body’s way of telling you that your diet or exercise routine is amiss.

Be sure to consult a doctor if you need to check your cholesterol. A routine blood test will be able to give you the answer, and you can talk to your doctor about what lifestyle changes will help.

Itchy feet

Summertime often means more visits to the pool or time exercising outdoors. But sweaty trainers and damp feet can also lead to an increase in fungal infections.

If you notice your feet are itchy, take a closer look at the skin. If it’s white and flaking off, or simply damp between the toes you may have a fungal infection. Head to the pharmacist for an anti-fungal cream to clear it up, stat.

Cracks in the corners of your mouth

Small cracks in the skin at the corner of your mouth is often a sign that your body isn’t getting enough B vitamins. If your diet is high in refined and processed foods- think soft drink, pastries and pasta- B vitamins are often the first to take a hit.

The answer? Opt for a diet high in whole foods. Try eating more grains, legumes, salmon and red meat, all foods high in B vitamins. If in doubt, always contact a healthcare professional.

Related links:

How to lose weight after 60

5 tips to stay asleep all night

The best ways to exercise outdoors

Trailblazing musician and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto dies at 71

Composer and activist Ryuichi Sakamoto, the creative force behind The Last Emperor’s award-winning score and trailblazing member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, has passed away at the age of 71 following a second cancer diagnosis.

Sakamoto died on March 28, as a statement released by his management team to his official website confirmed.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of artist and musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto,” it read.

"While undergoing treatment for cancer discovered in June 2020, Sakamoto continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would allow.

"He lived with music until the very end.”

“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to his fans and all those who have supported his activities, as well as the medical professionals in Japan and the US who did everything in their power to cure him,” it continued, before going on to explain that his funeral service was “held among close family members” as per his wishes, and that they would be unable to accept “calls of condolences, offerings of incense or flowers, and the like.”

To conclude the statement, the team shared one of Sakamoto’s favourite quotes, “‘Ars longa, vita brevis’.

“Art is long, life is short.”

Sakamoto’s art is perhaps what he will be remembered best for - by many, for his widely-renowned soundtracks, including those for Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, the same film in which he starred alongside his friend, David Bowie.

The team managing the late Bowie’s official Twitter account posted a tribute to Sakamoto in the wake of the news, writing, “REST IN PEACE RYUICHI SAKAMOTO … ‘Here am I, a lifetime away from you’” alongside a picture of the two, taken in Japan in 1983.

REST IN PEACE RYUICHI SAKAMOTO

“Here am I, a lifetime away from you...”

Sad to learn of the passing of actor, composer, and producer @ryuichisakamoto. In the 1970s, he rose to fame as a member of the Japanese group Yellow Magic Orchestra, helping to lay the foundations for generations to come with their innovative electronic approach.

In the 1980s, Sakamoto even joined forces with Iggy Pop for the 1987 hit ‘Risky’.

“One of the greatest, most influential composers of our times,” tweeted one fan of his music mastery. “And I mean like really truly foundational levels of influence. Do you like electro? Hip hop? Video game music? Modern film scores? Jpop? Jrock? "Experimental music"? He was a pioneer of it all!"

RIP to Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the greatest, most influential composers of our times. While the award was presented at the 1988 ceremony, the film - directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, and telling the story of China’s last emperor, Puyi - was released the previous year. The score also saw him take home a Grammy and a Golden Globe for his work.

As the Japan Film Society wrote on Twitter, Sakamoto was “a singular artist whose contributions to music and film remain unparalleled.”

R.I.P. Reportedly, Sakamoto even contacted the Tokyo governor shortly before his passing, continuing his mission to protect Japan’s tree cover.

And in 2011, Sakamoto turned his influence into activism yet again in the wake of the Fukushima meltdown when he organised a concert against nuclear power.

pic.twitter.com/mYLMEN6HrZ

— ryuichi sakamoto (@ryuichisakamoto) April 2, 2023

Images: Getty

It was overwhelming relief."

Mr Field said Page had stopped breathing and had to be revived multiple times.

“I took charge. I didn’t mean to, but I did,” Ms Jones told the ABC.

“I think I was the only one there who had any first aid training, so I just started to do what I do at work,” she said.

NSW Ambulance chief inspector Brian Parsell said the swift response “saved Greg’s life”.

“When I was on stage and Greg was stabilised I asked who the person who used the defib was and Grace anxiously stepped forward,” he said.

Page left the children’s band in 2006 due to health complications but made a comeback in 2012.

Wiggles star Emma Watkins addresses fan theory about her hair

The Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins has put fan theories to rest in her latest interview about whether or not her hair is real on children’s show The Wiggles.

The 30-year-old performer admitted that her character, Emma Wiggle, surprisingly wears a wig.

"I'm about to confirm that I do wear a wig in The Wiggles show! Kevin Rudd warns of return of the “yellow peril”

Kevin Rudd has warned of a “return to the days of the yellow peril”, and slammed the Coalition’s management of the relationship with China as self-serving.

Speaking in Canberra on Tuesday, the former prime minister blasted the Abbott and Turnbull governments for using a hard-line approach on the Chinese government.

Rudd said Malcolm Turnbull’s 2017 speech declaring that Australia will “stand up” against Chinese interference was actually motivated by domestic and internal politics, at a time when Turnbull’s leadership was under threat.

“Managing the China relationship has always been difficult, it was difficult when I was prime minister, so it is for prime minister Morrison today,” Rudd said.

He said while there should be vigilance against threats to Australia’s democracy, it should not translate into racial profiling.

“I will be the first to the barricades if the most recent national security legislation becomes a political vehicle for Hansonism and a return to the days of the yellow peril,” he said.

Rudd also slammed Abbott’s cutting of the foreign aid program towards the South Pacific, saying it would allow China to expand its influence in the region.

“Abbott also collapsed Australia’s aid effort into the South Pacific, virtually cutting it in half from our period in office, and in doing so the Liberal government opened the door to the region for China,” Rudd said.

“This was an utterly reckless act with long-term national security consequences for Australia.”

On the same day, Rudd told ABC’s 7.30 that while Australia should not be “naïve” about China’s interests in relation to Australia, he favoured a “balanced” approach.

When asked about warnings from former ASIO chief Duncan Lewis, Rudd said it was “kind of crazy to overreact and to get into reds under the bed land, to get into yellow peril land”.

The former politician said while Labor supported the foreign interference legislation, it “should not result in some sort of anti-Chinese domestic political witch-hunt”.

Why is urine yellow?

Why is urine yellow? – Ronan, aged 9, Greenslopes, Brisbane.

Our bodies use nutrients from the food we eat. But the processes involved in digestion also create what we call “byproducts”. That’s where a new chemical is created along the way.

Some of these byproducts in the body are waste and our bodies have clever waste processing systems to get rid of them.

Some of the waste goes out in your poo. And waste that can be dissolved in water goes out in your wee. We call this “water-soluble” waste. Water-soluble means it can be dissolved in water.

And the parts of your body in charge of “making” the wee are called the kidneys. They’re shaped like kidney beans.

A delicate balance

The kidneys work around the clock to make sure the body has the right balance of water, salt and chemicals and not too much water-soluble waste in it.

Kidneys have special filters in them that help sort out the useful bits from the waste. They also are in charge of transporting the water-soluble waste from your kidneys, down two special pipes called “ureters” and into your bladder (which is down near the genitals).

When the bladder gets full, it sends a message along your nerves to your brain that makes you feel like you need to wee.

So…. why is it yellow?

One of the water-soluble waste products that your kidneys put into your urine is a chemical called urobilin, and it is yellow.

The colour of your urine depends on how much urobilin is in it and how much water is in it.

If your urine is light yellow, it means you have been drinking a lot of water and there’s a lot of water in your urine. We call this being “hydrated”.

If your urine is dark yellow, that means there’s less water, and a relatively high amount of urobilin. It probably means you haven’t been drinking enough water and could be dehydrated.

Too much water versus not enough

When you haven’t been drinking enough water, the kidneys get a message from your brain to try to keep more water in your body (and out of your bladder). You will also start to feel thirsty.

If people can’t drink water (because they have a vomiting illness, for example), they might need water put directly into their blood. This usually happens in a hospital using a drip (which is where a bag of salt water is put into your blood via a needle in your arm).

If you have been drinking more water than your body needs, the body tells the kidney filters to get rid of the spare water. That’s when your urine will look paler.<!-- End of code. If you don't see any code above, please get new code from the Advanced tab after you click the republish button. Spice it up: Indian curried yellow split pea and coconut soup

Korma curry powders are milder than many other Indian spice mixes, so this is a great way to introduce aromatic food to your family. Add less if your loved ones are still getting used to spiciness.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 brown onions, finely diced

3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 leek, white part only, washed, thinly sliced

1 carrot, diced

1–3 tablespoons korma curry powder

660 g yellow split peas, rinsed

2 litres good-quality vegetable stock

300 ml coconut milk

45 g baby spinach leaves

juice of 2 limes, or to taste

1 long red chilli, thinly sliced diagonally

Greek-style yoghurt and coriander (cilantro) leaves, to serve

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in the insert pan of a slow cooker or a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, leek and carrot and sauté for five to seven minutes, or until tender. Add the curry powder and stir for 30 seconds, or until aromatic.

Return the insert pan, if using, to the slow cooker, or transfer the vegetable mixture to the slow cooker. Add the split peas and stock. Cover and cook on high for three and a half hours, or until the split peas are very tender.

Stir the coconut milk through. Purée the mixture to a rough consistency, using a stick blender, food processor or blender, leaving some of the soup un-puréed if desired. (You may need to add a little extra coconut milk to reach your desired consistency.) Stir in the spinach and lime juice, to taste. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Ladle into bowls and serve topped with chilli, yoghurt and coriander.

Images and recipes from Slow Cooker Vegetarian by Katy Holder, Murdoch Books, RRP $29.99. There's more to the yellow bin than you think: Did you know these recycling rules?

Although many think they can get away with sneaking things into their recycling bin, carelessly putting in the wrong items will contaminate the whole batch.

It’s important to know the rules of recycling to avoid recyclables ending up in landfill.

If you’ve been throwing your wine bottles in the yellow bin with the lid still on, then you've been doing it wrong.

If you’ve ever thrown out a pizza box with food still in it, then you’ve contaminated the whole batch.

“What I usually do with my pizza boxes is rip off the part with leftover toppings still stuck to it, throw it in the garbage bin and the other half in recycling,” Jayne Paramor, deputy director of national environment group, The Boomerang Alliance, told news.com.au.

“I’d rather not compromise what goes into the recycling bin because if it is contaminated, the entire batch will be sent off to landfill.”

To avoid this happening, Aussies need to learn more about what can and can’t be put in the yellow recycling bin.

“The vast majority of soft plastic can be recycled but we don’t have the capacity in this country to do it — it is restricted based on our recycling infrastructure,” Ms Paramor said.

City of Sydney Council’s waste strategy manager Kath McLaughlin said the most common mistake people were making was putting their recyclables in a plastic bag and then throwing it.

The plastic bag later gets caught in the waste machines.

Others are unfortunately still making obvious mistakes with their yellow bins, such as contaminating their recyclables with nappies and clothes.

“People think by putting their clothes in the recycling bin it will somehow make its way to a charity, but no, it doesn’t work like that,” Ms Paramor said.

Ms Paramor said that spending just a few extra minutes making sure you are recycling correctly will bring us all one step closer to protecting the environment.

“It really is everyone’s responsibility, from governments, to the manufacturers and retail sectors in what they’re putting on the shelves, to consumers and being conscious of what they’re purchasing and doing with their waste.”

Although the rules differ for every council area depending on their waste management facility, here are the best-practise rules you can keep in mind next time you recycle.

DO RECYCLE

Yoghurt tubs: Rinse and remove lids before placing in yellow bin.

Local papers: Plastic and rubber band goes to REDcycle, only paper can be recycled.

Books: They can be recycled but the paper must be separated from the spine and broken down into smaller pieces.

Tissue boxes: The plastic film must be removed first and placed in a REDcycle bin. The cardboard can then be flattened and put in the yellow bin.

Large boxes: Must first flatten the cardboard before placing in the yellow bin.

Magazines/papers containing staples: There is no need to separate the staples from the paper before putting it in the yellow bin.

Greasy takeaway paper bag: If the paper bag only has a little bit of grease on it then it is fine to put in the yellow bin. If it is very contaminated, put in the red bin.

Detergent/shampoo bottle: Empty the bottle, rinse and then recycle.

Bottle of wine: Put the lid in the red bin and then recycle the bottle.

Coffee cups: The lid can be removed, washed and recycle. However, the cup cannot be recycled due to its waterproof plastic lining so put it in the red bin.

DON’T RECYCLE

Cotton handles from paper bags: Recycling facilities don’t handle textiles so if it is cotton, then compost or try to reuse it.

Used tissue: You can’t recycle tissues.

Clothes: Old clothing will jam the machinery at the recycling facility.

Nappies: There are specific nappy recycling services in Australia that you can use but if you put it in your yellow bin, it will contaminate the other items.

There are also unique services to recycle mobile phones, computers and TVs, printer cartridges, paint, coffee capsules and mattresses.

(Will link to services)

Have you been recycling correctly? Is this the end of the yellow recycling bin in Australia?

Some environmentalist experts are calling for Australia to get rid of yellow recycling bins, claiming they are not as environmentally friendly as many believe.

Instead, some are suggesting for Aussie households to have multiple bins for different recyclable items as they believe that throwing all recycling into one bin is a hindrance to the environment.

In Germany, citizens have five different recycling bins to place different items in.

They have an organic bin, one for plastic, one for paper and two separate bins for clear and coloured glass.

Deputy director of environment group The Boomerang Alliance, Jane Paramor, told The Guardian that Australia could improve its recycling by looking to other countries.

“We used to actually separate our paper out from our plastic and glass and tins,” she said.

“It was only about 10-15 years ago that that changed and [some councils] decided everything to go in one bin. That was when the problem started.”

Ms Paramor said one fault with Australia’s yellow bins is that having various materials thrown in together can cause contamination.

If glass shards get stuck to a pizza box, the cardboard can no longer be used.

Likewise, if someone incorrectly throws a battery or nappy into the recycling bin, then it may cause clogging issues in recycling sorting machines.

In April, Ipswich council in Queensland made the decision to send recyclable rubbish to landfill, as there was contamination of the majority of recycling waste due to many residents putting incorrect items in their yellow bins.

After receiving backlash for its decision, the council came up with a way to cut contamination rates.

Glass is now banned from kerbside bins and only paper, cardboard, aluminium cans and plastic containers can be put in yellow bins.

Ipswich councillor David Morrison said the council was aiming to cut down contamination by more than 50 per cent.

“Broken glass is causing contamination of paper and cardboard that are recycled in the yellow lid bin. We are focussing on getting our contamination levels down,” he said in a statement.

The council is now creating a new way to collect glass from homes.

What are your thoughts on the yellow recycling bins? Let us know in the comments below.

Why this council’s yellow line fine has sparked outrage

Brisbane City Council has denied any wrongdoing after a resident claimed she received two fines for parking near yellow lines, which were painted around her car after she pulled over.

Ethel Chan said she left her car on Bell Street in Kangaroo Point on February 16, but whens he returned to her vehicle 16 days later on March 2, she found she had been slapped with two fines for illegally parking next to yellow line.

But Ethel claims the yellow line was painted after she parked her car, as when she initially parked her vehicle it was within a 'no limit' zone.

On February 21, she said she observed white chalk markings around her car, but said she received no notification about the works.

“Innocent people can be charged for offences they have never committed and be fined for $252 in total for just not having a look at their car for five days,” Ms Chan wrote in a letter to the council.

Brisbane City Council confirmed the road was painted between February 20 and 25, but said no vehicles were moved for the work to be done.

“The machinery used for painting the no-parking area is around the size of a double-pram and cannot be operated when a vehicle is parked against the kerb,” it told Fairfax Media.

The council has refused to waive the fines.

Ethel is adamant her car was moved in order for the lines to be painted.

“It is unbelievable that no cars were parked there because at least my car was there I know, and that street is within the Gabba area, it was very often that all parking spaces were occupied on that street,” she wrote.

9 foods to avoid to keep your teeth white

Certain foods can stain our teeth and give them the yellow tinge that nobody wants. So rather than heading to the dentist for a teeth whitening session you can simply avoid these foods (or brush well right after) to give your smile a chance to stay bright and white.

Can’t say no to your coffee fix or your cherry snack? Just try cutting down as much as you can, or mix them with other things that will help reduce the effect.

1. Red wine

You’ve probably experienced that less-than-glamorous red wine smile after a few vinos. And the bad news is that the staining can last even longer than your hangover.

2. White wine

But don’t reach for the chardonnay just yet – white wine can cause yellow teeth as well. Not due to the colour of the drink itself, but the effect that the acid in white wine has on your teeth. It weakens them and leaves you vulnerable when you do tuck into something dark (like your ‘morning after’ coffee).

3. Tea and coffee

It makes sense that dark drinks will stain your teeth, but if you’re a caffeine lover it’s fairly unlikely that you’ll be giving up your drug of choice. Add a little milk to help combat the discolouration.

4. Fresh lemon and lime

It tastes great in your drink but the acid in these citrus fruits can affect the enamel on your teeth, removing the surface layer to reveal the yellow tones underneath.

5. Beetroot

It’s not just your hands or shirt that get stained from this earthy veg. Beetroot affects your teeth in the same way. Try adding some cheese to help combat the negative effects of the beets.

6. Balsamic vinegar and soy sauce

You may not know that the popular dressing balsamic vinegar is around fifteen per cent sugar, so the sticky dark liquid quickly attaches itself to your teeth, leading to discolouration. Soy sauce is high in salt as well as being dark in colour, which can also cause trouble.

7. Cherries and berries

It’s getting obvious now that the darker fruits and veg can be contributing to your yellow teeth. But it’s not all doom and gloom – the health benefits still make them worth consuming, so long as you have a quick brush afterwards.

8. Fresh juice

Now that you know about the acid in food affecting your teeth as well as the dark foods, you’ll think twice before adding those carrots, beets, turmeric, or citrus fruits to your freshly squeezed juice at the café.

9. Sports drinks

It’s not only the sugar content that causes stains to ‘stick’ to the teeth – it’s also the acids that can lead to trouble. Water will always hydrate you more than a sports drink, and remember, it’s completely clear.

Have you found anything else that has caused discolouration in your teeth? We would love to hear about your experience in the comments below.

Allison Baden-Clay’s parents call on Australians to strive to be kind

The parents of Allison Baden-Clay are encouraging Australians to strive to be kind in honour of their daughter, five years after she was murdered by her husband.

Allison’s family and friends are calling on Queenslanders – and Australians – to perform random acts of kindness and speak out against violence throughout July in memory of the mother-of-three.

Allison’s parents Priscilla and Geoff Dickie launched the sixth annual anti-domestic and family violence campaign Strive To Be Kind on June 30, the day before what would have been their daughter’s 49th birthday.

Allison’s body was found on a creek bank 13km from her home on April 20, 2012. Her husband Gerard, who reported her missing, was later found guilty of killing his wife.

“We hope that this campaign will plant the seed of respect, tolerance and empathy,” her sister Vanessa Fowler said, who now finds herself educating the public about domestic violence, on behalf of the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation.

Priscilla and Geoff hoped the campaign would help spread positivity throughout the community and ensure their daughter’s memory will live on.

“As parents we’re extremely proud and we think it’s just something that will make women think, and men,” Priscilla said.

The grandparents also recently opened up about parenting their three granddaughters.

"It's exciting for us to do it the second time around. We've already been through it once and now we're doing it the second time ... a lot of people don't get the chance to do that," Geoff said.

The couple, in their mid-70s, have been through hell and back in the last five years but still manage to be positive and excited about their future with their three darling granddaughters, now 10, 13 and 15.

Thrust into the spotlight in horrible circumstances, Allison’s family have turned a nightmare into something positive.

Strive to Be Kind Day will be held on July 28. The day encourages everyone to wear yellow, Allison’s favourite colour, and to perform small random acts of kindness.

The Allison Baden-Clay Foundation aims to build a Queensland community that acknowledges the prevalence of domestic and family violence and seeks to create a Queensland that is committed to eliminating and taking concrete action to stop domestic and family violence.
