"Fresh chapter": Channel 7 reveals new star line-up

Channel 7 has revealed yet another shake-up in its news presenter lineup, following months of significant reshuffles and the departures of several high-profile television personalities from the network.

On Sunday, the network announced what it described as a "fresh chapter" for its 7News Sydney team, with veteran broadcasters Angela Cox and Mark Ferguson appointed as co-anchors for the flagship 6pm bulletin.

Cox, who has served as a weekend news co-presenter for the past four years, temporarily filled in for Ferguson while he was on leave during the Olympics. This period of transition occurred amid a series of changes initiated by Seven's news and current affairs director, Anthony De Ceglie.

The timing of Ferguson's leave had sparked speculation about his future at the network, particularly against the backdrop of reported cost-cutting measures due to a significant drop in ad revenue. However, the latest announcement puts those rumours to rest, affirming Ferguson's continued role at the helm of 7News Sydney.

Cox, who has spent two decades with Channel 7, including a notable seven-year tenure as a foreign correspondent in the US, expressed her excitement about the new role. "Mark’s warmth, integrity and authority behind the news desk has rightfully earned him a loyal following," she said. "He’s also a great bloke, always professional, very funny and a great husband and family man.

"The news landscape has changed so much. The way we consume news is radically different now than even 10 years ago and 7NEWS is evolving too."

Cox is set to co-anchor her first bulletin with Ferguson on Sunday, September 8, following his return from filming a special series of news reports.

Ferguson, who has been the face of the 7News Sydney bulletin for a decade, celebrated his 40th year in the media industry in February. His vast experience and reputation as one of Australia's most trusted news voices make him a key figure in this new co-anchor format.

"This new co-anchor approach brings a new sense of dynamism, innovation, and flexibility to the hour-long program," said De Ceglie in a statement. "I am incredibly excited to see Mark and Angela work together."

Sunday's announcement is the latest in a series of changes within Channel 7's newsrooms. In July, star Brisbane newsreader Sharyn Ghidella was unexpectedly axed after nearly two decades with the network, a move she revealed on social media after being informed of her departure while at a hairdresser's appointment.

August saw the departure of veteran sports presenter Shane Webcke from the news desk, though he will continue contributing NRL insights for the network. Additionally, senior journalist Steve Hart announced his exit from the Brisbane newsroom in an internal email to staff last month.

In contrast to these exits, Channel 7 has also made strategic hires, including the recent addition of former ABC journalist Karina Carvalho as a 7News presenter in Melbourne.

As Channel 7 continues to navigate these changes, the network's commitment to refreshing its news lineup is evident, with the Cox-Ferguson co-anchor team set to usher in this "fresh chapter" for 7News Sydney.

Images: 7News

Sandra Sully and Angela Bishop reflect on 60 years of Network 10

Sandra Sully and Angela Bishop have reflected on their most memorable moments with Channel 10 as the network celebrates 60 years on the air.

As the network looks back on 60 years servicing and informing the country, two of their long-running powerhouses have looked back on their careers at Network 10.

Both Sully and Bishop have been fixtures of the 10 network since the 1990s, both carving out such influential roles within the Australian mediascape that they’ve earned Order Of Australia medals, honouring their work within the industry.

The two journalists have looked back at some of their most memorable moments in their careers, ranging from covering breaking international news, keeping industry secrets and their hardest interviews.

When asked about her most memorable news broadcasts, Sandra said that informing Australia about the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 is something that will stick with her forever.

“News strikes without warning,” Sandra tells PEDESTRIAN.TV.

“I was the deer in the headlights and in the chair that night, and it all unfolded while we were live on air. So I had to go with it.”

Sully, who was part of the Ten Late News team at the time, said she remembers her broadcast on each anniversary of the devastating attacks.

“It’s something that is actually always with me,” she continued.

“September 11 every year is always a kind of sad time for me because we all thought World War Three was going to erupt that night, that what we were watching was the beginning of World War Three."

“And I don’t think generations these days could ever fully appreciate what that was like, because news is so instant now. They can get it all day, every day, on any platform. And so it’s hard for them to appreciate what actually happened that night, and the world’s moved on. For me, it was equally daunting, challenging and rewarding.”

When working in the media industry, one thing that comes with showbiz is keeping secrets, which is something Angela Bishop learned all too well in 2010 when Oprah Winfrey was planning her trip Down Under.

“I’ve never kept something more in the vault in my life,” Angela said with a laugh.

“Oprah rarely did interviews back then because at that time she had her show on every day, she just felt she didn’t need to, because people got to see her every day. I got a great one-on-one interview with her when she came out, and then I covered her tour.

“That was an absolute pinch me moment being interviewing her up on Hamilton Island when she arrived, as two koalas started having sex right next to us in the tree.”

While secret keeping is only part of Bishop's job, she has had decades of experience interviewing celebrities around the world.

And while all of her interviews are memorable, not all of them are for the right reasons, as she explained how she struggled interviewing Sacha Baron Cohen during his pressrun for Borat in 2006.

“He was in character the whole time, from when I met him to when it ended, and I had to keep up with him, just doing all of the Borat things that Borat does,” she explains.

At one point, Borat asked her: “Where is the journalist?” and when Angelia replied that she was the journalist, Borat feigned surprise.

“We say to let a woman be a journalist is like to let a monkey fly a plane,” he quipped.

Angela said of the infamous interview, “I just had to think on my feet and in the sand while there was people around, interacting with us and everything.”

Angela and Sandra both spoke candidly about why they've stayed with the network for so long, as Angela said, “It’s the cheekiness and the risk-taking nature of the network. It’s a bold place.”

“And it’s just family. I lost my husband back in 2017 to cancer and it was really a crucial part of my healing how much support I got from 10. It felt like family here, they really looked after me during that time and so did the viewers. Channel 10 viewers are quite something.”

Sandra added, “It’s always been the culture, and it’s always been the teamwork. Television news is the epitome of teamwork."

“I’m really thrilled, honoured, privileged to be a part of the 10 family and to have been there so long. I try not to think about how long it is, and the poor audience have to put up with me, but it has been an absolute joy, because 10 have always taken it to the edge. They’ve always redefined what television is in Australia. They’ve done it with irreverence and humour, but also a strong sense of ethics and respect for the audience.”

“Rest, great soul”: Dame Angela Lansbury exits to the "theatre in the sky"

Dame Angela Lansbury, known for her roles on TV, stage and film, has died aged 96 just days before her birthday.

Her family broke the news in a statement on Tuesday.

“The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1.30am today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday,” they said in a statement.

The Murder, She Wrote star was one of the most decorated actors in stage history, winning five Tony Awards for her performances on Broadway and a lifetime achievement award.

Lansbury scored one for her best-known work on Broadway, where she starred as the piemaker Nellie Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, winning the Tony for best musical actress in 1979.

Her other three Tony awards for best actress in a musical were for her roles in Mame (1966), Dear World (1969) and Gypsy (1975).

She earned Academy Award nominations for her work in film as a supporting actress in Gaslight (1945), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1946), and again in 1962 for The Manchurian Candidate.

The star displayed her singing talents off-Broadway when she voiced the character of Mrs Potts in the 1991 animated movie Beauty and the Beast.

For the film’s 25th anniversary in 2016, Lansbury took to the stage in New York and brought the house down with a rendition of the movie’s titular tune.

But her widespread fame came when she took on the role of a mystery writer and amateur sleuth in Murder, She Wrote.

Running for 12 seasons from 1984 to 1996, the series was loosely based on Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple stories and followed Jessica Fletcher, a widowed mystery writer living in the village of Cabot Cove, Maine.

Lansbury earned 12 Emmy award nominations for Murder, She Wrote, making her the record-holder for the most Emmy nominations for lead actress in a drama series.

While the show became a hit, Lansbury said she found the first season exhausting.

"I was shocked when I learned that had to work 12-15 hours a day, relentlessly, day in, day out," she recalled.

"I had to lay down the law at one point and say, 'Look, I can't do these shows in seven days; it will have to be eight days.’”

But, she was pleased that her role as Fletcher had become an inspiration for older women.

"Women in motion pictures have always had a difficult time being role models for other women," she observed.

"They've always been considered glamorous in their jobs."

After the news broke of her passing, tributes have poured in across social media as fans and Hollywood stars remember the legendary actress.

Angela Lansbury, who graced the stage for decades winning five Tony awards and brought the sleuthing Jessica Fletcher into our living rooms for a dozen years, has passed. "That's rude": Tina Arena's explosive comment to Angela Bishop

Australian music icon Tina Arena has slammed the lack off support given to the entertainment industry throughout the pandemic in a passionate plea on Studio 10.

The singer, who will be featured in the upcoming Young Talent Time 50th anniversary special, blasted the "double standard" of the government cancelling music shows across the country, but sporting events still being allowed to go ahead.

“I also hate the differentiation between sport and arts in Australia. As the artistic community, we will draw the line in the sand now and say, ‘No more of your double standards now,’” she continued.

“Sport is a great thing, but life is not just about sport, life is about art and culture … I would encourage the artistic community to come forward, and I’d encourage anybody else to start thinking straight now.”

Entertainment reporter Angela Bishop agreed with Tina, noting how much events has been cancelled on short notice, but "never the footy match”.

Tina was visibly outraged, saying "That's a categoric disrespect."

Tina Arena is one of millions of Melbourne natives who have been coping with seemingly endless lockdowns, which is due to have had the most days under lockdown of any city in the world on October 4th.

“I’ve really struggled, and I’m comfortable in saying that. I’ve had a very difficult time, like many people. I’m profoundly against being locked up – the injustice is too much,” Arena said.

Continuing on the injustice of the music industry, Tina noted how little financial support the arts have received during the pandemic.

“I’m sorry, that’s rude, disrespectful, and shouldn’t be at all allowed to play out."

"Never, ever silence an artist – we play an important role in the social fibre of any country. It’s freedom of expression, and I’ll fight for it until the day I die.”

Angela Bishop noted that one of Tina's few stage performances in recent years was the February 2020 Firefight concert to raise money for those affected by the bushfires.

“It seems people have forgotten about the arts community when they’re in need,” Angela suggested, to which Arena agreed.

“If anything goes wrong, the artistic community has always lifted their sleeves up."

"We’ve gone in there and done what we needed to do. We’re very happy to play that role to help people – it’s what we do,” said Arena.

“Now we’re in trouble, is someone helping us? No. It’s amazing how people just fly away and disappear..."

“You know what? DONE. We’re done, and now we’re saying it. Just stop this ridiculous, preposterous behaviour. It’s got to stop,” she said.

Tina's impassioned speech struck a chord with viewers ion Studio 10, as many agreed that more should be done to support Australian artists.

One fan tweeted, "I'm ready for Tina Arena to be PM."

Another said, "Tina articulating how we all feel. Who wore it best? Julia Morris and Angela Bishop’s awkward onscreen moment

Julia Morris and Angela Bishop expertly diffused a potentially-awkward live television moment on Friday after both showing up wearing the exact same dress on Studio 10.

The beloved television personalities laughed the moment off as they attempted to avoid a repeat of the infamous #jacketgate moment of 2017.

Appearing on Studio 10 to discuss her new book, tongue-in-cheek self-help book Julia Morris Makes it Easy, with Beau Ryan and Sarah Harris, Morris appeared on screen in a stunning purple and pink dress, only to be interrupted a few moments later by Bishop in the very same floral outfit.

“Can I just interrupt … Can I get a piece of advice Julia: What happens when you turn up on national television wearing the same frock as someone else?” Bishop asked as the panel erupted in laughter.

“What I wanna know Ange is who wore it breast?” Morris quipped, standing up with her chest to the camera.

“You took the words right out of my mouth,” Ryan joked, before Morris added: “You look gorgeous … I have to get my own modesty board but check this out,” she said as she lifted her leg up to show off sneakers.

Bishop replied by saying she'd paired the dress with classic black Christian Louboutins.

It’s certainly not the first time a live cross has seen two presenters in the same outfit.

In 2017, off-air footage of Channel 9 reporter Julie Snook being berated by newsreader Amber Sherlock for wearing a similar colour top to her during a live cross made headlines across the world, forever to become known as #jacketgate.

Angela Bishop and Sarah Harris open up about trauma on Studio 10

Studio 10 hosts Sarah Harris and Angela Bishop have shared an emotional moment together after opening up about the tragic miscarriages.

In a segment on the show, both of the morning show hosts got teary-eyed as they revealed neither of them dealt with their pain properly at the time.

39-year-old Sarah Harris stated that she suffered a miscarriage just a day before the Logies.

“I was trying on Spanx, as you do, and I was in the change room, and there was just blood everywhere,” she said.

“I called my mother-in-law and said, ‘I don't know what's happening,’ and she said, ‘You're probably having a miscarriage’.”

Sarah called her GP who told her that she was definitely having a miscarriage, but she would have to wait until the Monday to go get a scan.

“For 36 hours, I just bled and thought, ‘Oh, well. That's my first baby gone,’ and I kind of just dealt with it in my own way,” she continued.

On the Monday, the sonographer revealed that Sarah had actually been pregnant with twins and had tragically lost one of them.

Sarah said it “kickstarted a horror eight weeks” where she was “afraid the other one would fall out”.

.@SarahHarris, @AngelaBishop and #TristanMacManus share their stories of miscarriage. #Studio10 pic.twitter.com/KIUsxoZYAE
— Studio 10 (@Studio10au) September 28, 2020

She said she was also “afraid to exercise” because she was terrified that she would lose her other baby.

“I don't think I really took the time to grieve it, because I had that beautiful baby in the end,” she said.

Meanwhile, 53-year-old Angela Bishop says she went for her eight-week scan when she heard the terrifying words that “there is no heartbeat”.

Angela teared up as she revealed she went back to work the next day and “never really dealt with it”.

“I now know I went into a pretty bad period of depression,” she said.

Both Sarah and Angela agreed that the conversation around miscarriage needs to open up.

They stated losing a child in that capacity and speaking up about it was a “taboo” subject.

Their co-host, Tristan MacManus also got teary as he talked about his wife, actress Tayna MacManus’ miscarriages.

“From my perspective, as the support, you just don’t know what to say and I think something that plays a huge part in the fact that we don’t talk about things because it’s not just that you don’t know what to say, you don’t want to say the wrong thing,” he said.

“That’s why I feel like this is so important, because we’re not trying to fix things, we all take that role of ‘i have to fix this’ but how can you fix something that you don’t know how to fix?

“So all you can do, when you can’t do anything, you have to do something, and sometimes that’s just being a shoulder or it’s just being an ear to let someone get it off their chest.

“And we can start the conversation, we can debunk some stigmas, we can put it out in the open where someone can try and help somebody else.”

60-year-old Paralympian dies during solo crossing of Pacific

Angela Madsen, whose remarkable life took in a spell in the Marines, a string of gold medals and record setting rowing journeys, has passed away as she attempted a solo journey from California to Hawaii.

The 60-year-old’s death was confirmed by her wife, Deb Madsen, in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “With extreme sadness,” she wrote, “I must announce that Angela Madsen will not complete her solo row to Hawaii.”

Speaking to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Deb said the last she heard from her wife was when she was on route from Los Angeles to Honolulu in a 20-foot row boat, by text on Saturday. Angela had said she was going to enter the water to complete some maintenance. Deb had become concerned when she didn’t hear from Angela.

Shortly after, the US Coast Guard located her body.

“The [spotter] plane saw Angela in the water, apparently deceased, tethered to RowofLife, but was unable to relay that information due to poor satellite coverage,” Deb wrote on the Facebook page. The body has now been recovered.

Soraya Simi, who was making a documentary about the crossing, said she was shocked by the news.
“This is the single heaviest moment of my life,” Simi said in a statement to the Southern California News Group. “I am so sorry and so sad to write this. I know so many of you were cheering her on and wanted her to succeed.”

Madsen led a life to remember. After her brother told her she wouldn’t make it in the military, she joined the Marines. But ended up in a wheelchair after injuring her back playing for the Marines basketball team.

But despite the turn her life took, Madsen took up rowing and won several gold medals at the world rowing championships. She went on to row across the Indian and Atlantic Oceans and also circumnavigated Great Britain in her boat.

Madsen’s athletics talents were not limited to rowing – she also won a bronze medal in shot put at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

She also set up a program for disabled rowers in California. “I wanted to create an opportunity for people with disabilities to row,” she said. “It’s one of the most inclusive activities people can do. We row three days a week and do it year-round. It’s completely free for people with disabilities.”

Simi said Madsen understood the danger involved in the 2,500 mile journey. “This was a clear risk going in since day one, and Angela was aware of that more than anyone else,” Simi said. “She was willing to die at sea doing the thing she loved most.”

Meet the "flunky" who performs a very unusual service for The Queen

Being the Queen of the United Kingdom comes with a few more perks than your average joe.

In addition to two birthday celebrations a year, a vault of beautiful tiaras and an endless hoard of staff waiting on her hand and foot, the British monarch has someone to assist her in a fairly strange task.

The Queen’s personal assistant and senior dresser, Angela Kelly has said she breaks in the sovereign’s shoes so she doesn’t have to.

"As has been reported a lot in the press, a flunky wears in Her Majesty's shoes to ensure that they are comfortable and that she is always good to go. And yes, I am that flunky," Kelly wrote in her memoir titled The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, as reported by Hello.

"The Queen has very little time to herself and not time to wear in her own shoes, and as we share the same shoe size it makes the most sense this way."

Queen Elizabeth granted Kelly, who served as her close confidant for 25 years, to write not only about royal fashion, but their relationship together.

This is the first time a current member of the royal household has been given special permission to write such intimate details, as per the book’s publisher Harper Collins.

"It gives a rare insight into the demands of the job of supporting the Monarch, and we gain privileged insight into a successful working relationship, characterized by humor, creativity, hard work, and a mutual commitment to service and duty," Samantha Cohen, the former assistant private secretary to the Queen said.

"Angela is a talented and inspiring woman, who has captured the highlights of her long career with The Queen for us all to share."

Kelly’s book will delve into the replication of the royal family’s Christening gown, the Queen’s 2012 Olympics clip with James Bond and what happened when Michelle Obama came to London in 2009.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Queen Elizabeth's "flunky" and close confidant.

“Extraordinary permission”: Queen Elizabeth allows close friend to write tell-all book

The Queen’s personal dresser and confidant Angela Kelly has been given “extraordinary permission” from the Queen herself to write a tell-all book that details their working relationship.

Kelly has been employed by Her Majesty since 1994 and is the first member of the royal household to be given permission to write about their experiences on the job, according to Nine Honey.

The monarch has "personally given Angela her blessing to share their unparalleled bond with the world", says a spokesperson for the publisher, HarperCollins.

Kelly, 51, started at the palace as the Queen’s senior dresser before rising to Her Majesty’s Personal Advisor and Curator, which includes jewellery, insignias and wardrobe as well as in-house designer.

She is the first person in history to hold such a job title and shares a uniquely close working relationship with the Queen.

The Other Side of the Coin will include never-before-seen photographs from Kelly's private collection as well as anecdotes of their time spent together.

"Angela Kelly is the first serving member of the Royal Household to have been given this extraordinary permission," the publisher says.

Kelly likened her relationship with the Queen as “two typical women” who “discuss clothes, make-up and jewellery” in a 2007 interview with The Telegraph.

"I don't know why the Queen seems fond of me - because I don't give her an easy time," Kelly said. "I do think she values my opinion, but she is the one who is in control. I do worry about her and care about her. But we also have a lot of fun together."

Australian palace aid Samantha Cohen, assistant Private Secretary to the Queen between 2011-2018, says the book "gives a rare glimpse into the demands of the job of supporting the Monarch, and we gain privileged insight into a successful working relationship, characterised by humour, creativity, hard work, and a mutual commitment to service and duty".

"Angela is a talented and inspiring woman, who has captured the highlights of her long career with The Queen for us all to share."

Angela Bishop breaks down talking about her late husband on Studio 10

Entertainment reporter Angela Bishop has broken down while opening up about her late husband on Friday morning.

As the Studio 10 panellists discussed Blanche d’Alpuget and Bob Hawke’s final days together, the journalist was reduced to tears as she was reminded of her own late partner, Peter Baikie.

“When she spoke about that privilege of being with him as a carer, that’s true. I can’t quite put it into words yet,” she said through tears.

“But um, it’s a very special time, there’s a lot of honesty there. I kind of get what she’s saying, it’s a pure kind of love.”

Sitting down with Leigh Sales, Blanche spoke candidly of her late husband’s legacy, which Bishop clearly resonated with.

Denise Drysdale provided a comforting shoulder to cry on as she wiped away Bishop’s tears from her face.

“We’re just helping out a dear friend here,” said Sarah Harris.

Afterwards, Angela shared that it “would have been their wedding anniversary this week.”

“So it is a bit of a hard week,” she said. “I do think what she said was beautiful.”

“And it’s how you felt, so you can relate to it,” Denise said afterwards.

Angela’s husband, Peter, passed away in 2017 after a tough battle with cancer.

The family made a joint statement at the time of his death, saying: "It is with a heavy heart that Angela Bishop, family and friends advise you of the passing of Angela's much-loved husband, Peter Baikie.

"His courage in fighting this disease left all that shared his journey full of immense admiration. He found his tower of strength in his wife Angela and the love of his daughter Amelia," the statement read.

"He fought courageously till the end and passed away on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.

"Peter was a car fanatic, a motorbike lover and a gifted mechanic. He embraced life with all it had to offer him – but without doubt his family and friends were the highlights in his world.

"The love shown to Angela and family during his final days by Peter's circle of friends is testament to the man he was. He will be dearly missed but forever loved."

Despite her decades of experience, she doesn’t fangirl over celebrities

Bishop has a secret to not getting flustered when interviewing high profile celebrities, which is research.

"The first thing that helps me is being prepared for the interview. Researching the bejeezus out of them," she explained.

"Even when I've only got short chats, or even if there's only the chance I'll see them, say on an Oscars red carpet where you're never quite sure who's going to come.”

She also thinks it’s a matter of treating them like the professionals they are.

"I think that's professional and the correct thing to do in terms of paying courtesy to the person who's agreed to give me their time to be interviewed.

"When you look at it from that respect, that takes any of that nervousness away because basically we're two professionals doing a job and that puts you on more equal footing and you're less intimidated."

2. The celebs who do make her starstruck

Despite Bishop interviewing some of the biggest names in stardom, including Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep, there are a few that still make her starstruck.

"On the couple of occasions that I've been sitting down to interview a person who literally was on a poster on my wall growing up, it took everything in my power not to sit there and go 'Blahhhh'," she said.

"Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin comes to mind. To be in the same room, and breathing that same air was just... if my teenage self had seen that she would've just gone cray cray."

Another person she gets excited over? Clint Eastwood.

"It took me years to get him!" she said excitedly.

"My watch tells my heart rate and I looked at it and it was peaking."

View this post on Instagram

Bucket list ✅ I finally got to interview #ClintEastwood.
