Residents on Gerringong’s Tasman Drive, a coastal stretch often described as “Australia’s most beautiful”, have voiced frustration over a surge in visitors. But the agent marketing a high-end home on the street says the next owner of the property will be well placed to avoid the busiest moments.

Samuel Lindsay, the agent handling the sale of the landmark residence at 37 Tasman Drive, said the neighbourhood has “come alive” in recent weeks after attracting major attention online.

The once-quiet residential street has gained traction on social media through a wave of “hidden gem” posts. Since then, it has drawn growing numbers of tourists, influencers and tour groups, turning it into a popular weekend destination.

For some long-term locals, the change has been difficult. Resident Kevin Dale told the ABC it has been “painful at times.”

“People don’t consider your boundaries and go onto people’s properties. There are people abusing each other, and it’s a bit of a pain for parking.”

Dale, who has lived on the street for 12 years, said everyday life now involves planning around the busiest visitor times.

Lindsay acknowledged that “other old school locals” in the area “may have an aversion to the increase of traffic,” but said the owners of 37 Tasman Drive would have little trouble retreating from the activity outside.

“You can drive straight in, close the door, go upstairs and sit, and all you see is the mountains and the sea if you don’t want to be a part of what’s going on in the street on a weekend,” he said.

He said the home’s layout also offers space to shut out the bustle, whether that means relaxing by the plunge pool or withdrawing to one of the four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

“I don’t think it’s as crazy as the media might be making out,” Samuel said, adding, “weekdays are quiet.”

Lindsay said the Sydney-based owners are not selling because of the crowds, but simply because they are no longer using the home often.

“It’s got nothing to do with the weekend activity. They quite like it,” Samuel said. “Everyone’s happy and laughing and having fun.”

He said Tasman Drive is beginning to attract visitors in the same way as other well-known destinations in the region.

“It’s no different to a lot of towns. Kiama has the Blowhole where everyone goes to, and Wollongong has the lighthouse [the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse].

“As with most of those destinations, it’s usually weekend warriors and people that want to do a day trip,” he said.

“So it’s vibrant, and it’s exciting, and then it’s quiet.”

The Gerringong property is being offered through Expressions of Interest, with a price guide of $6 million to $6.5 million.

“The land is valued at just over $2-million and the house was $4.3-million to build,” Samuel explained.

The most recent sale on Tasman Drive was a home that changed hands for $4.275 million in November 2024.
