Two men have been hit with 72 charges after allegedly scamming elderly drivers in car parks across NSW.

The two men, aged 37 and 57, allegedly stole from elderly women inside shopping centre car parks across New South Wales between last Saturday and Wednesday, in a “bonnet up” scam.

Authorities allege that one of the men would approach the victims and claim that there was a problem with their car, before asking them to open the bonnet to check the “issue”.

While the victim was distracted, the other man would steal items from the car, including wallets, purses and cash.

Police believe the incidents took place across the state, including Penrith, Beecroft and Pennant Hills in Sydney, and Newcastle, Wagga Wagga and Goulburn in regional NSW.

The two men were arrested at a service station in Glenthorne on Wednesday, after police conducted investigations into 18 incidents of alleged theft across the state.

They were found with $6000 in cash, international passports, and several receipts for money transfers at the time of their arrest.

The pair were taken to Taree Police Station and hit with 72 charges related to fraud, theft and entering a vehicle without consent and refused bail.

Police are still searching for two other men in their 40s, who were both wearing hats and blue face masks as part of their investigations.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.
