Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster have been married for 18 years, tying the knot in 2007.

But Lancaster has revealed she almost walked away from the relationship early on.

The model-turned-police officer explained that Stewart, who was 53 when they met, didn’t want more children at the time.

By then, the rock legend had already been through two divorces and was father to six children with four women.

Lancaster, now 54, admitted in a new interview that it was a potential deal-breaker, “That would have been very hard. But we just went with the flow,” she said.

Luckily for the pair, Stewart changed his mind. After undergoing IVF, the couple welcomed two sons together – Alastair, now 19, and Aiden, 14.

“Now Rod always says, ‘I wish I’d said yes [to babies] earlier, because then we could have had more children,'” Lancaster shared with Saga magazine while promoting her upcoming memoir, Someone Like Me.

She added that the pair even considered adoption, “Even five years ago we were talking about adopting, but it ended up not happening. We thought there might be too much of an age gap.”

Lancaster also joked about the dynamics at home, quipping, “I’m already a mum-of-three in many ways because there’s another big baby who needs my attention in a different way,” referring to Stewart, who turned 80 in January.

“I think all women would say that about their husbands,” she joked.

The couple now enjoy life in a large blended family that often takes holidays together and includes Stewart’s five grandchildren.

Stewart’s eldest daughter, Sarah, 61, was born in 1963 to ex-girlfriend Susannah Boffey.

He later welcomed Kimberly, 46, and Sean, 45, with ex-wife Alana Stewart; Ruby, 38, with former partner Kelly Emberg; and Renee, 33, and Liam, 31, with ex-wife Rachel Hunter.
