Thousands of NSW healthcare and hospital workers are set to see a welcome lift in their pay packets, thanks to a landmark deal delivering at least $10,000 extra over four years.

The agreement, brokered by the Health Services Union NSW (HSU NSW) with unanimous support from its Branch Committee of Management, covers a wide range of roles, from allied health professionals to ward staff, cleaners, linen workers, administration teams and pharmacy assistants across city hospitals, rural health services and community health centres.

Under the deal, a hospital assistant currently earning $52,000 will take home $62,000 by 2027. Wards persons will see a $10,400 boost, while security officers will enjoy a $10,500 increase.

“That’s real money that makes a real difference to working families,” said HSU NSW secretary Gerard Hayes. “From the audiologists who help restore hearing, to the cleaners who maintain infection control, to the patient transport staff who provide dignity and care – every single one of our members deserves recognition.”

The staged increases include a four per cent pay rise in each of the first two years, a 0.5 per cent superannuation increase, and changes to working conditions, such as the right to two consecutive days off, no night shifts before annual leave unless requested, and roster changes only after consultation. Night shift workers will also see their loading rise to 20 per cent.

The agreement exceeds the NSW Government’s three per cent wage policy and will be back-paid to July 1.

It also aligns with new gender equity objectives introduced in May under the Industrial Relations Act, aimed at addressing the gendered undervaluation of work.

With more money, better conditions and a strong acknowledgement of their vital role, NSW’s health heroes are set to get the recognition they’ve long deserved.
