"It's disgusting": Nursing home slammed for leaving double amputee on roof for hours

Lea Hammond has told ABC's 7:30 the heartbreaking story of her father's death and how he was left for hours on a roof in a heatwave in scorching Perth sun.

She received a phone call from her father's nursing home, Regis Nedlands, saying that an ambulance was taking her father to the hospital.

“[The staff member said] dad had been taken to hospital due to sunburn. They told me they couldn’t find him, they didn’t know where he was,” Lea said.

Lea arrived at the hospital, horrified to see her father Brian Hunter delirious and suffering serious blisters and burns.

“He was slumped over in the bed, and his back was exposed. I could see his back was really terribly burnt, his whole back was burned. And he was not speaking to us. He was semi in and out of consciousness,” Lea said, speaking about it for the first time to 7.30.

The family discovered that her 86-year-old double amputee father had been left on Regis Nedland's rooftop for two hours.

Police were involved and checked the CCTV footage, showing that a Regis staff member entered the access code for Brian to go onto the roof and let him propel himself onto the rooftop.

Staff at the nursing home are supposed to do hourly checks on residents, but no one noticed Brian was missing.

He was rescued after another resident's visitor saw him outside on the roof unconscious.

Lea says the incident is "disgusting".

“It’s disgusting that anyone would open a door on a 40-degree day and let a man outside with no water,” Lea said.

“No-one knows where he is for two hours. I mean, if that carer put him outside, shouldn’t she have reported that he’d gone outside? Why didn’t they know where he was for two hours?”

The nursing home did a report on the incident and found that Brian entered the access code to open the door to get onto the roof, not a carer.

Lea is furious about this version of events and disputes it.

“I felt quite angry about it that they would say something like that,” she said.

“I’ve visited so many times at Regis, and he really found it quite difficult to remember the key code number.

“Every time I went there, I would have to put the code in for him.”

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has already sanctioned Regis Nedlands for putting residents at "serious risk" after finding 30 allegations of rough handling or unwanted sexual contact.

The Commission said it would continue to “closely monitor” Regis Nedlands, and if there were ongoing concerns about care and services it “may consider further regulatory action, including whether to vary or revoke the service’s accreditation”, according to an exclusive from the ABC's 7:30.

It wasn't the first incident Brian suffered at Regis, as he had a fall in November that left him with a black eye and a bleed on his brain.

After recovering from the burns, Brian lied in his bed for four weeks before passing away, with Lea saying no one from the nursing home called.

“At the end of his life, Dad barely spoke. He wasn’t speaking at all. They had to feed-tube him because he couldn’t swallow. And he barely recognised us,” she said.

“He was just a great father, wonderful grandfather, fantastic husband. This is just so distressing to see him being treated in that manner.

“I think he was just totally neglected, it’s awful.”

“Felt like acid”: ALDI forced to defend sunscreen after customer’s horror stories

ALDI has been forced to defend a heavily criticised sunscreen range known as Ombra SPF 50+ as there have been several accusations from unhappy customers who were left with horrific sunburn.

Shoppers who bought the product have said that they were left with burns and skin irritations, but ALDI said that the sunscreen has passed industry testing and is safe to use.

Complaints have emerged, with many customers giving the product a one-star rating.

“Used this once and would never use it or recommend ever. Face felt like I had acid on it. My face was red and burned for hours after. Very, very itchy.”

“The Ombra 50+ spray is horrendous,” one woman said.

“I reapplied twice and was in the sun for a few hours at most (I am very pale), and I got absolutely roasted. It’s criminal to sell this product with the intensity of the Australian sun.”

A father from Queensland was also left with a nasty surprise after using the sunscreen.

"We went for a swim 15 to 30 minutes after applying, dried and immediately applied again," Tate told 7NEWS.com.au.

"People refer to it as acid. You may as well cover yourself in vegetable oil," he said.

However, some customers have said that the horrific reactions are just different types of skin reacting to the active ingredients in the sunscreen.

“It’s not the actual sunscreen it’s how different individuals react to the active ingredients in it,” a woman said.

“It’s the same with every type of sunscreen. Fatal disease often mistaken for sunburn

A new report has found that many people aren’t aware of the symptoms of meningococcal disease with many mistaking the bacterial infection for sunburn.

A national campaign is urging Australians to educate themselves of the early signs of the potentially deadly disease.

Despite being rare and treatable, meningococcal can result in death within 24 hours if it is not caught early, warned Professor Robert Booy, head of the clinical research team at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance.

“Meningococcal is a dreadful disease because five to 10 per cent die, 15 to 20 per cent are left with devastating complications and it can come on in just 12 to 24 hours, and it is really important to recognise the early signs to get antibiotic treatment from the doctor,” Prof Booy told AAP.

On Tuesday, Queensland Health confirmed a Year Two student from Brisbane had been diagnosed with meningococcal disease.

The seven-year-old is receiving treatment in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Parents were alerted by health authorities but the case is expected to be an isolated one.

James Smith, from Metro North Health Unit, told the Courier-Mail, “The chance of any further linked cases within the community is very low.”

If the disease is not treated fast enough, it can be deadly.

Last month, 19-year-old Emma-Kate McGrath from Victoria died from the disease.

Research commissioned by GlaxoSmithKline found 41 per cent of respondents were unaware of the specific symptoms.

22 per cent of respondents mistook the infection for other ailments with 2 per cent believing it was cancer, 16 per cent thought it was flu and 4 per cent thought it was sunburn.

Professor Booy says the disease will normally present itself in two forms, meningococcal septicaemia (blood poisoning) or meningococcal meningitis (In the brain and spinal cord).

The symptoms for both include having a high fever and rash which starts as small dots and increases to purple patches.

Cold hands and feet are another symptom of blood poisoning.

“The signs are a bit vague but the rash is telltale,” Prof Booy said.

He explained that in some cases the rash can come later so people should look for other symptoms and rely on their “instinct”.

Professor Mike Starr, a paediatrician and infectious disease doctor at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, says the disease can be prevented by vaccination.

The routine immunisations children receive only protect them against one of six main strains of the disease, meningococcal C.

Professor Boy explained a young child can still be susceptible to the other strains and both the W and Y strains are on the rise.

To find out more about meningococcal disease you can head to KnowMeningococcal.com.au.

How to ensure sunburn doesn’t ruin your trip

Nothing ruins a summer holiday like a pair of pink shoulders. But just because you’re starting to resemble a piece of bacon, doesn’t mean your holiday is completely toast.

As Dr Rob Matthews from Cremorne Medical states, “As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure, however if you are unlucky enough to get sunburnt there are a number of things which you can do to help manage the symptoms.”

Here are a few tips for managing sunburn on holidays. If you’re starting to look like a British backpacker after a day at Bondi beach, here’s the best thing to do.

1. Stay cool and hydrated

Once sunburn has struck, the name of the game is to keep cool and stay well hydrated to give your skin the best chance to heal. As Dr Matthews states, “Simple things like cold compresses, lots of water and a good moisturising cream will be your best friends.”

Still no relief? Well, if you’re still feeling ordinary Dr Matthews adds, “If the sunburn is particularly painful I would recommend taking some paracetamol.”

2. Aloe Vera gel

Thousands of sunburn sufferers around the world have sworn allegiance to Aloe Vera as the best way to calm skin suffering from sunburn. The best way to apply Aloe Vera on sunburned skin is by using your fingertips, leaving it on until it’s dry and absorbed.

It’s recommended that you repeat the process two to three times a day, although if the gel is starting to feel uncomfortably sticky you can rinse if off with cool water.

3. Avoid the sun (at least for a little while)

If you look less like yourself, and more like a fire engine, heading straight back out into the frypan doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Rather than heading straight back into the rays, consider taking an afternoon off and lounge around in the shade.

If you do have to head out and you can’t avoid the sun, make sure you really take care to slip, slop and slap this time, otherwise you’re only going to make matters worse.

4. Consider a travel concierge service

A travel concierge service is perfect for people with who are concerned about exposure to the sun, providing that extra little bit of assistance to make life easier. Companies like Medical Travel Companions offer a range of services, like providing access to a registered nurse for the course of your journey who can help assist with your movement.

Have you ever had a nasty case of sunburn while you were on holidays?
