Pet owners urged to keep dogs rugged up this winter

Australian pet owners have been warned of the dangers of freezing temperatures increasing arthritis-related problems in dogs.

Animal Welfare League senior veterinarian Karishma Dahia told NCA NewsWire that she had seen a 20% increase in consults for arthritis-related problems in dogs in Queensland, following the state’s cold snap.

“I’d say we’ve seen a 20% increase in consults for osteoarthritis in middle-aged to older dogs sort of seven years older in the winter,” she said.

“The colder weather does seem to, I guess, progress the worsening of osteoarthritic spine, so dogs seem to get a little bit more stiff and are slower to rise.”

The vet said although arthritis is common among all dogs, she mostly treated larger dog breeds for the condition.

University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science professor Bob Doneley told NCA NewsWire that arthritis was a degeneration of the joints that caused joint cartilage to erode.

“Most commonly, it’s an age-associated problem because both the bone around the joint itself are affected and age is a factor of diet and veterinary care,” he said.

“All pets face the same sort of ageing problems as people do, including heart disease, kidney problems, cancer, and arthritis.”

“I don’t think you can prevent arthritis, but I think you can reduce the severity of it. And you can certainly reduce the effects on the animal’s quality of life.”

Some common signs of arthritis among dogs include trouble walking up the stairs or jumping into the car, doing circles before they sit down and even muscle spasms causing the back legs to shake.

Image: Getty

Clever tricks to keep bugs off your picnic rug

To keep insects from biting, stinging or annoying you – and just as importantly, to keep them away from your food – follow these 13 surefire, all-natural tips.

Turn your body into a bug repellant

By eating certain foods, you can repel many insects. For example, munch on a clove of garlic every day for three days before a picnic.

As you sweat out the garlic odour, it repels many insects.

You can also take 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar three times a day for three days before the picnic, too.

Use the power of produce

Rubbing a slice of onion over your skin can be a good way to keep away mosquitoes and other biting insects.

Fresh orange or lemon peels also work.

And another time-honored approach to keep gnats and mosquitoes at bay is to moisten a cloth or cotton ball with white vinegar and rub it over your exposed skin.

All these work on your picnic table as well; wipe it with vinegar or onion, for example, and bugs will stay away.

Be vanilla

Turns out that bugs don’t like the smell of vanilla. Dilute 1 tablespoon vanilla extract with 1 cup water and wipe the mixture on your exposed skin (and if you wish, your picnic tablecloth) to discourage mosquitoes, blackflies, and ticks.

Spray some natural mint mouthwash

Insects do not like the smell of mint in any form. Transfer your favorite natural mint mouthwash into a spray container and spray it on yourself and the area around you while outdoors.

Plant garlic, mint and rosemary

Naturally ward away bugs from your patio meals by planting these three plants in decorative pots or your outdoor garden. They’ll keep the bugs away, plus you can use them in your cooking.

Turn on a fan

Set up a portable fan facing your outdoor food and eating areas, and turn it on to a calm breeze while you serve and entertain. The wind from the fan will make it difficult for bugs to fly in and pester you and your guests.

Don't wear heavy perfumes or scents

Stay away from wearing heavily scented shampoos, body sprays, perfumes, or deodorants while outdoors. The fragrances can attract bugs and the stings that follow.

Leave sticky sweets at home

Insects are particularly drawn to foods like melon, grapes, peaches, fruit juices and soft drink – to them, they’re like flower nectar. They can easily detect these foods, and will be persistent in their pursuit. While they may be terrific summer foods, avoid them at outdoor meals, or keep in well-sealed containers that you open only when everyone is ready to have some.

Set up separate food tables for bugs

One clever bug-battling tactic is to put plates of sweet foods (things like watermelon rinds, overripe peaches, or a large bowl of coloured sugar water) several metres away from your serving and eating areas, so the bugs feast separately from you and your guests. Keep your garbage cans far away as well, as bugs will flock to them for your leftovers.

Cover all drinks

Only serve drinks in covered cups or bottles, and drink through a straw. This is particularly important if your drink is sweetened. If you don’t have covered cups, use aluminium foil and poke a hole for a straw.

Light some candles

Smoke repels mosquitoes and flies. Tiki torches and citronella candles add ambiance to outdoor entertaining, anyway. Plus, they’re affordable, effective and have a pleasant scent.

Float your table

The best way to keep ants off your table is to put the feet in wide containers filled with water. Ants won’t be able to make it across the water to climb up.

Cover up with a colander

A simple wire-mesh colander can be used to keep bugs off dinner. If you are setting up a buffet-style meal, an upside-down colander over a plate of food protects it, while keeping the dish on display. You can also buy domed food covers or nylon netting.

This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. How to properly clean your deep-pile or delicate rugs

Rugs make a cosy addition to any room, and are a real boon underneath bare feet on a cold winter's morning.

Shaggy rugs, from natural sheepskin to synthetic pile, or even novelty leather strips are more popular than ever, but even though you might vacuum them regularly, you may feel like it's not getting fully clean. Or, perhaps wary of damaging the rug, you might not be vacuuming it at all – and (ickiness factor aside) that's even worse.

When dirt gets into a shag rug, normal foot traffic grinds the dirt against the fibres and damages the rug. The longer the dirt stays in the rug, the deeper it gets ground in, doing more damage over time.

If you've invested in a one-of-a-kind handmade textile rug, or a natural sheepskin, keeping it in tiptop shape is a priority. But even more affordable options can be tough to clean and maintain – which is certainly the reason 1970s-style wall-to-wall shag carpeting quickly fell out of favour. There's no reason smaller shag rugs (and other handmade rugs) shouldn't be cleaned on a regular basis – as long as you know what to do.

Natural Sheepskin

If your rug has a care tag, always consult this first. Sheepskin rugs can be taken to the dry cleaners, but this can be expensive. In any case, nearly all natural (un-dyed) sheepskin rugs can be hand-washed gently at home.

1. Fill a bathtub or tub with cool or lukewarm water. Never use hot water, as it will cause your sheepskin rug to shrink.

2. Add a specialist sheepskin and wool detergent. A standard wool detergent may cause damage, so make sure it is designed for sheepskin. The detergent must be non-alkaline, with no biological enzymes. Fabric softeners are a no-no, too. Read the directions on the label, and test any product in a small area before using.

3. Place the sheepskin in the tub and gently swish it around in the sudsy water to loosen any dirt particles for up to five minutes.

4. Squeeze the sheepskin out, and rinse it twice in cold water to remove all detergent.

5. Once it's been rinsed, roll up the sheepskin and squeeze it dry. You may also want to pat it with clean towels or sponges to absorb any remaining moisture.

6. Lay the rug out on a clean towel to air dry. Pull the leather into shape, keeping it flat, and make sure the sheepskin dries in a cool, shaded place, away from direct sunlight or heat (which can cause shrinkage).

7. Using a metal bristled sheepskin brush, fluff the wool gently while still damp. Brush it once again after it's dried – your sheepskin will return to its natural fluffiness!

Wool shag and artisan textiles

By "artisan textiles" we're talking about handmade items like Moroccan Boucherite rugs, a contemporary pom-pom rug or something similar. The first thing to check is how well the fibres are attached to the backing, or to each other. If they're easy to pull out, you'll have to be extra-gentle. Some rugs can be cleaned with a canister vacuum or an upholstery attachment. Try it on a small area to make sure it doesn't pull the fibres out, and then go row by row, cleaning between the fibres, down to the backing as best you can.

It's a good idea to give these rugs a regular beating. Take the rug outside, flip it upside down, and flex the rug up and down to let the dirt fall out. Small rugs can be fluffed in the dryer on a no-heat setting for about 10 or 15 minutes. Flokati rugs can be combed with a wide-toothed dog brush to keep them looking fluffy and clean. At a certain point, you're going to have to have these rugs professionally washed. They're just too heavy and thick for most people to clean on their own. You'll want to take it to the cleaner every 18 to 24 months. As you probably expect, it's going to be expensive.

Acrylic

Cheaper shag rugs are probably going to be made of acrylic, but be careful – these are a huge fire danger. Don't ever keep them near a heat source. The downsides of a wool rug (expensive to maintain) versus an acrylic rug (highly flammable) don't even compare. If you do have an acrylic rug, do yourself a favour and replace it.

Viscose, nylon and polyester

These synthetic fibres can be treated the same way as wool, as long as you are careful about not pulling them out. Vacuum the rug with a canister vacuum or upholstery attachment, and shake it out as often as possible. The good news about this kind of rug is that it can be steam-cleaned, so the cost to have it professionally washed will not be as high.

Leather strips

Leather rugs are very hard to clean and not practical for anyone with kids or pets. The cotton backing absorbs spills and is very hard to clean, and the leather loses its perkiness with wear. To clean, you can try leather cleaner at home, but a professional wash is probably your best bet.

Ultimately, a statement shag rug is an expensive decoration to have on your floor. If you're not willing to dedicate the time and money to properly cleaning your rug (or replacing it every few years), it's probably in your best interest to wait out this trend.

Written by Kathleen Kinney. You won’t believe this new rug that’s an alarm clock

For anyone who isn’t a morning person, waking up in the morning can be a struggle. No matter how much you sleep you manage to get, the sound of the alarm clock is never welcomed.

Enter Ruggie – the latest (genius, interesting, plain strange?) innovation that’s set to turn night owls into cheery morning people.

The device is essentially an alarm clock built into a small rug that you keep next to your bed. When the alarm goes off in the morning, you have to physically stand on the rug for at least three seconds before it will turn off. There’s even an option to change the settings from the blaring alarm beeping to someone telling you positive affirmation. Now that’s a pretty good way to start the day! Watch the video above for a demonstration of the ruggie and tell us, would you give it a go?

Related links:

4 signs your body is trying to tell you something

The best ways to exercise outdoors

How to start running at any age
