We are saddened to hear of Bonza’s current situation and the impacts on its people, customers and partners,” the statement read.

“We will do what we can to support Bonza’s employees by prioritising them for any current and future roles at Virgin Australia, and encourage them to contact our careers team at recruitmentteam@virginaustralia.com if they wish.”

The three airlines' responses have been applauded by the aviation industry and Aussies alike with many branding it “the spirit of Australia”.

Image: Lachie Millard/ news.com.au

Firefighter praised for sweet interaction with three-year-old

A cooking mishap for one Aussie family ended with a heartwarming moment shared between a firefighter and a young girl meeting her hero for the first time.

Firefighters were called to a home at Blue Haven on the NSW Central Coast on Saturday, after a fire broke out on a kitchen stove top and spread to the range hood.

They were quick to put out the blaze and just as they were about to leave, three-year-old Mia was too excited to meet her heroes that she couldn't let them leave just yet.

"Once we got there and ascertained that there was no fire spread to the roof and other areas... their daughter decided to take me away into the room to see the new books she got," Doyalson Fire and Rescue Station Manager Dirk Ziekenheiner told Yahoo News.

"Which I then obviously took the opportunity to read," he added.

A picture of the sweet moment was shared on social media, with the firefighter sat on one of Mia's pink chairs and the three-year-old keenly listening to him read the story.

Mia also impressed the firefighter with her own safety knowledge, as she shared her understanding of calling Triple-Zero in an emergency, how to escape a fire and the importance staying outside after evacuating.

"Obviously her parents did really well and schools pass on the message, and you know that safety messages are key to surviving a house fire, especially these days," Ziekenheiner said.

"If you don't know what to do, and you never plan for it, then you're probably behind the eight ball... this girl was amazing, she knew all those key messages which is really important."

Aussies praised the firefighter in the comments of the post, with many of them commenting on how "cute" the moment was.

Mia's father, James, also added that his daughter was very excited to meet her heroes despite the circumstances.

"Mia watches a lot of children's TV shows which feature firefighters so she already knows they're heroes and they rescue people," James said.

"Having now seen first-hand the great work they do, we'll continue to spread the word about fire safety and we encourage others to do the same.

"Our family never thought we'd come this close to losing our home to fire, so the key is to not be complacent about the risks."

Image: Fire and Rescue NSW / Facebook

Pilot praised for revealing simple trick to cope with severe turbulence

A pilot has shared his simple "water bottle trick" for anxious passengers to cope with turbulence in the air.

Sydney-sider Jimmy Nicholson and his wife Holly recently shared a video of their bumpy flight with "horrible" turbulence that went viral on TikTok, after Jimmy shared his tips on how to cope with the anxiety.

In the video, his wife was filmed hyperventilating, and at one point even pulled out a sick bag. The couple held hands as other passengers were heard screaming during the wild turbulence.

“So we’re at the back of the plane so it’s worse here," Jimmy, who looked more calm than most passengers, said in the clip.

“It’s not comfortable, probably some of the worst I’ve been in. Could be widespread storms so pilots just have to pick their path of least resistance and go through it so nothing to worry about.

“Planes are built to withstand way worse. Not fun evidently, but completely fine.

“I’m a pilot and actually fly this aircraft type (Airbus). Here’s why you have nothing to worry about.”

For those terrified of turbulence, Jimmy suggested looking at the water inside an upside down water bottle.

“Water bottle trick: The water isn’t moving much, is it?” he said.

He added that if the water appears to be moving gently in the water bottle, then the turbulence feels worse than it actually is.

“Remind yourself it’s completely normal. The plane isn’t going to fall out of the sky,” he said.

The pilot suggested turning on the air conditioning and looking out the window to calm your nerves.

The video ended with passengers clapping after they rode out the turbulence, and the TikTok has been viewed over 2.4 million times, with many thanking Jimmy for his tips.

“This helps so much! We need more pilots to post about the stuff the rest of us think will be the last minutes of our lives,” one wrote.

“Thank you for explaining this. I’m an anxious flyer and seeing you talk about it has helped," commented another.

“Thank you for this video. I saved it and going to watch it in my flights when I am frightened," wrote a third.

Images: TikTok/ Instagram

Coles praised for helping small town through cost of living crisis

Coles has been praised for the innovative way they are helping a small Aussie town to combat the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The supermarket giant has started contributing to a community pantry in the coastal town of Ulladulla, 200km south of Sydney, which gives struggling locals basic grocery staples.

The Little Free Food Pantry in Ulladulla was set up by local woman Coralie Smith and her mother Melissa, who were on a mission to reduce food waste, while also give back to their community as the cost of living continues to take hold.

The motto "take what you need, give what you can" is plastered along the top of the pantry, set up outside the local scout hall, designed for people to help themselves to food to feed their families.

Most of the food in the community cupboard has been donated by the local Coles supermarket, which provides a range of baked items, meats and fresh produce daily.

Woolworths has also contributed items to the pantry every week, while also being topped up by generous locals.

One local woman named Michelle has been using the service for almost three months.

Before the pantry was established, Michelle was only able to afford to eat just one meal a day.

"I'm working three jobs because of the high interest rates and the cost of living," she told Yahoo News Australia. "When I collected my first hamper all I could do is cry".

The first time she was offered food she felt extremely "overwhelmed" but "now I'm definitely eating more, and am able to keep up with my mortgage and bills".

Woman praised for confronting pickpockets

An Italian woman has generated a lot of praise after her “brilliant” way of calling out pickpockets disguised as tourists has gone viral.

Monica, 57, is part of a volunteer group called Cittadini Non Distratti, meaning "Citizens not distracted," which aims to to disturb and prevent active pickpockets in the popular tourist destination.

She works alongside 40 other volunteers and has dedicated 30 years of her life saving tourists from the sneaky snatchers, and they’re doing it out of sheer goodwill.

"People are pickpocketed for their American or English passport, then to return to their country they have to go to the embassy in [...] Rome," Monica told Newsweek.

"This incurs additional expenses for them, so it is better to prevent this by warning tourists of the problem."

The videos, which were originally posted on Facebook, have gained the attention of a younger audience after they started posting on TikTok.

"We decided to make our videos go viral to inform tourists to be careful," she said.

"There is a lack of prevention and information about what is happening in the city and we are all happy that these videos are letting people see the problem in Venice and throughout Italian cities."

Many of the volunteers have their own way of weeding out the pickpockets, with some using a deafening whistle to capture the attention of everyone around them.

Others just call out “attention pickpocket” in both English and Italian then proceed to shoo away the pickpockets, telling them to “go away” and for tourists to “watch out for their wallets”.

In the video that has gone viral, the pickpockets can be seen scurrying away from the crowd as soon as these volunteers call them out.

Although the original video and account “citadininondistratti” got banned on TikTok, many other accounts have reposted and reshared the content.

Many have commented their praise for the group, despite local police officers reportedly not supporting this form of vigilante justice.

“Thank you for your service ma’am,” wrote one person.

“Brilliant 👏” wrote a second person.

“I was in Rome, both times I was on the train the locals warned and pushed the pickpockets away from me. Little girl praised for shielding baby brother for 36 hours in quake

A seven-year-old girl and her younger brother have been rescued after a 7.8 magnitude quake in southeast Turkey and northern Syria destroyed their home and trapped them beneath tonnes of heavy concrete.

Mariam and Ilaaf, along with the rest of their family, were asleep at home in Besnaya-Bseineh, a small village in Haram, Syria, when the Monday quake occurred. It is believed the siblings were confined in the debris for 36 gruelling hours before rescuers located them.

Footage has emerged of the moment the children were found, and has revealed that despite the horrors of their situation, Mariam had one priority - protecting her little brother. Their father has since informed reporters that Illaf’s name is an Islamic one meaning ‘protection’.

With an arm sheltering his head and covering his face from the dust and debris, Mariam can be seen stroking Ilaaf’s hair in what some believe to be the remains of their bed. A concrete slab lies precariously above them, pinning the two to the spot.

“Get me out of here,” Mariam pleads to the rescuers in the now viral clip, “I’ll do anything for you.”

To the relief of millions, the children were pulled safely from the scene of the disaster, and transferred to hospital to receive medical treatment.

While under the rubble of her collapsed home this beautiful 7yr old Syrian girl has her hand over her little brothers head to protect him.
Brave soul
They both made it out ok. pic.twitter.com/GrffWBGd1C

— Vlogging Northwestern Syria (@timtams83) February 7, 2023

UN representative Mohamad Safa took to Twitter to urge people to “share positivity” in light of the rescue. With a death toll in the thousands - a number only predicted to rise - and aid a desperate need, the siblings’ story has become a moment of bittersweet brightness in a time of tragedy.

Around the world, people who heard their story have taken to social media to praise Mariam for her bravery, hailing her as a hero for her actions and love in a time of disaster.

“Oh bless her,” tweeted one, “children's love and resilience makes me weep.”

“Miracles happen. What a great big sister. Lovingly protective under such stressful circumstances,” wrote another. “Hope for all those still trapped. Respect for all the rescuers working tirelessly.”

Their father, Mustafa Zuhir Al-Sayed, has confirmed that their family - he, his wife, and their three children - were asleep when it all happened.

“We felt the ground shaking,” he said, “and rubble began falling over our heads, and we stayed two days under the rubble. We went through, a feeling, a feeling I hope no one has to feel.”

“People heard us,” he explained, after recounting how he and his family prayed for someone to find them, “and we were rescued – me, my wife and the children. Thank God, we are all alive and we thank those who rescued us.”

Images: Twitter

Viewers respond to Allison Langdon's big debut

Allison Langdon has been praised following her debut in the A Current Affair hosting chair, after a moving display of empathy towards a survivor of domestic abuse.

In Ally’s debut interview, she sat down with Kimbarlie O’Reilly, who was abused by her ex-boyfriend Jake Frecker, who has just been released from jail after serving four years of a six year sentence.

“A thousand different things go through my head about the next few years and what’s going to happen. Like, how long do I have left to live,” Ms O’Reilly told Langdon about the depth of her fear of what her ex might be capable of.

Ms O’Reilly then detailed the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-partner, explaining how she would be locked outside of her house for hours at a time, verbally berated and physically assaulted.

“I’m still struggling every day. I have panic attacks; I have nightmares; I don’t sleep; I have anxiety and PTSD and I didn’t have any of this before,” Ms O’Reilly told Langdon.

"How long do I have left to live?"

TONIGHT on A Current Affair, Ally Langdon sits down with a woman who is lucky to be alive after being beaten by her then-boyfriend.#9ACA | Watch LIVE 7pm pic.twitter.com/gBxPP8xnN3

— A Current Affair (@ACurrentAffair9) January 30, 2023

“He’ll be angry at me for what’s happened and it’ll be my fault still. Not at all. Sorry,” said Ms O’Reilly, welling up.

Langdon then comforted Ms O’Reilly. “Don’t apologise.
Pilot Michael James has been praised for his quick thinking which saved a lot of lives during a collision with another helicopter on the Gold Coast.

The 52-year-old was flying the chopper when it collided with another near Sea World in a crash that claimed the lives of four people.

James was injured during the collision, and yet managed to land the damaged aircraft safely with his passengers only sustaining manageable injuries.

Mr James is now recovering from his surgery and is yet to comment on the harrowing experience.

Aviation expert Geoff Thomas said the pilot’s actions were lifesaving as he performed “an extraordinary feat of airmanship”.

“It’s just amazing, it’s an incredible feat to do that given the level of damage and that he would have been hurt with glass and perspex everywhere,” he told The Gold Coast Bulletin.

“It was an extraordinary feat of airmanship and he saved lives, there is no doubt about it."

“When I looked at the images, I was astonished at the damage and that he was able to land it at all."

“We could have had a far worse situation here.”

Australian Transport Safety Bureau Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell also praised Michael James as a lifesaver.

“It was a remarkable job considering the damage that was done to the front-left hand part of the aircraft where the pilot was sitting,” he said on Tuesday.

“We could have had a far worse situation here.

“What we do need to know now is, what was occurring inside those cockpits.”

Mr Thomas went on to suggest the collision between the two helicopters had occurred because they were in each other’s blind spot.

“People do not appreciate that, when looking down, you can’t see a helicopter up from the surroundings. My sense is that was a factor given both pilots were highly regarded and highly experienced. It may have been a blind spot situation. It is just a terrible tragedy.”

Restaurant owner praised for hiring policy that targets "oldies"

Like many in the hospitality business, Barry Iddles was struggling to find staff to fill shifts at his restaurant 360Q in Queenscliff when he was struck by inspiration.

The 67-year-old decided to put the call out to “oldies”, adding an invitation to retirees to come and work at his waterfront venue on the back of his winter postcards.

“We sent out 42,000,” he said.

“I put, ‘We’re recruiting – juniors, come and learn the skills of hospitality. Millennials, come and show us what you can do. And seniors and retirees, come back to the workforce for one or two shifts per week.’

“I sent it out by mail and off we went. We had a great response.”

He stressed that potential employees didn’t need a resume or hospitality experience and could just come in for a chat.

Now, Iddles has 12 staff working for him aged over 50, including former nurses and healthcare workers, a mechanic, small business owner and florist.

"We've got two 74-year-olds, a 70-year-old, and then we've got [people aged] 57, 60, 64, 66 and 67," Mr Iddles said.

"There is a labour shortage and a labour crisis, [but] I don't have one. Whittaker's chocolate praised for new packaging detail

A popular New Zealand chocolate brand is helping to revitalise te reo, the official Māori language, one block at a time.

To celebrate Māori Language Week, Whittaker's revealed it was introducing special edition packaging for one of its most popular blocks, which has gone down a treat with Kiwi shoppers.

From August 22, the packaging of Dreamy Milk blocks will be translated into te reo to read Miraka Kirīmi.

Matt Whittaker, the brand's chief operating officer, said the family-run business hoped the label would contribute to "revitalising" te reo, which is considered endangered and has only 127,000 native speakers worldwide according to the Endangered Languages Project.

Whittaker’s announced it would translate the packaging of its Dreamy Milk chocolate bar into te reo for Māori Language Week. "The sport's greatest player": Billie Jean King's praise for Serena

Serena Williams will be remembered as tennis’ “greatest player”, according to World Tennis Association (WTA) founder Billie Jean King, after the World No. 1 announced she would be retiring from professional tennis at this year’s US Open.

Since her career began in 1995, Williams has won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 23 singles, 14 women’s doubles, and two mixed doubles, with King adding that the star player has “inspired a new generation of players and fans”.

“When Serena steps away from tennis, she will leave as the sport's greatest player,” King said in a statement.

“After a career that has inspired a new generation of players and fans, she will forever be known as a champion who won on the court and raised the global profile of the sport off of it”

Williams, who turns 41 next month, found it difficult to announce the news, writing in an op-ed published in Vogue that she felt “a great deal of pain” in deciding to hang up her racquet.

“There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads,” Williams said.

“I keep saying to myself, I wish it could be easy for me, but it’s not. Beauty brand praised for “thoughtful” opt-out email

Beauty brand Mecca has received a divisive response after sending out a marketing email giving subscribers the chance to opt out of Father’s Day promotions.

The email, which was sent to all members of the Australian site last week, gave those who didn't celebrate Father's Day due to poor relationships or death a chance to opt out of further emails.

“An option to opt out,” the email subject read.

“Sometimes it's nice to choose which emails you see from us. In the lead up to Father's Day, we understand if you don't want to receive emails on the subject - so we've made it easy to opt out.”

Thousands of Mecca customers flocked to Facebook to praise the brand's initiative, as many revealed that they had difficult relationships with their fathers.

“I'm so glad for this email because I was burnt pretty hard by my dad and I don't need any reminders,” one woman said.

“Even if it's not a go-to place for Father's Day gifts it's still great to see the initiative! I just hope they do the same for Mother's Day because I also don't have her around and it hurts to see,” she added.

While the brand received a lot of praise for the email, others slammed it as a “shameful marketing stunt” and condemned people for being “overly sensitive”.

“I think a lot more thought could have gone into it,” wrote one disgruntled customer. “I understand the sentiment but the specific reference to Father's Day was a bit weird.”

“I don't remember getting one of these for Mother's Day. Why not a general email with a list of holidays allowing customers to choose which ones they want to opt out of?” she asked.

While some people opposed the emails, the reception was largely positive, with customers calling on other brands to do the same.
