Pensioner's epic 600-mile journey from England to Scotland on a pony

Jane Dotchin has completed an epic 600-mile (1000 km) journey from England to the Scottish Highlands with her pack pony Diamond, and disabled Jack Russell terrier Dinky.

The 82-year-old has been making this seven-week trek every year since 1972, with nothing but her trusted pony, pet dog and a few belongings including a tent, food and water which she carries in a saddlebag.

The pensioner travels between 15 and 20 miles a day from Hexham, Northumberland to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

"I love camping and I love the countryside," she said, according to the Daily Mail.

Her dog Dinky, who deformed front legs, is just as happy to go on the adventure, sitting comfortably in the saddlebag as the world passes by her.

She lives on porridge, oatcakes and cheese, and carries an old mobile phone in case of emergencies.

Dotchin does not let her eye-patch stop her either, as she is determined to continue the tradition for as long as possible.

"I know the route so well, I don’t need to read maps. I can manage if I keep to the routes I know," she told the publication.

Dotchin first started long-distance trekking 40 years ago when she rode to Somerset, which was around 300 miles from where she lived, to visit a friend.

She has made the journey up north every autumn since, and is an inspiration to many, with those who have spotted her sharing photos and videos of the avid horse rider.

"A personal hero passed by just now!" wrote one person, who spotted Dotchin riding her pony back in 2021.

A personal hero passed by just now! US airports use clowns, candy and ponies to relax passengers

Airports across the US are recruiting clowns and miniature animals in a bid to soothe grumpy passengers.

As the busy summer season kicks off, droves of holidaymakers are facing lengthy airport security queues and delayed flights.

Many have been venting their frustration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on Twitter, using the hashtag #iHateTheWait.

Desperate to lighten the mood, airport bosses have been forced to come up with some creative solutions.

San Diego International Airport has brought in circus performers to help keep delayed passengers smiling, Good Morning America reported.

Meanwhile, Denver International Airport is literally sweetening up its customers, offering candy to those waiting in long lines.

And Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport has even enlisted "therapy ponies", miniature horses whose sole job is to delight passengers.

"Animals help reduce stress and anxiety levels and put smiles on people's faces," airport spokeswoman Mindy Kershner told NBC news.

"Unlike service animals, who are working and should not be touched, therapy animals can be patted and hugged."

The TSA has attributed the long lines to an increased number of travellers, more passengers bringing carry-on bags, the need for more robust security screenings, and a decrease in the number of security officers.

This week USA Today reported 450 American Airlines passengers were stranded at Chicago's O'Hare Airport overnight after getting stuck in TSA queues.

What do you think about the US airport’s solution? Do you think you could use something like this to brighten your mood on overseas trips?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

15 beautiful European cities you never thought to visit

10 best-rated tourist landmarks in Europe revealed

World’s longest train tunnel to open under Swiss Alps

A pony, a donkey and a cow walked into a pub

A ragtag group of barnyard animals have headed to an iconic Australian pub to celebrate their newfound freedom after escaping from their paddock on Monday night.

The owner of Humpty Doo Hotel, situated 40km north of Darwin in the Northern Territory, woke to find three unusual patrons at her establishment: a pony, cow and donkey.

Owner Mary Walshe, who lives next door to the pub, phoned NT police at 2.45am to alert them of the trespassers, fearing for the animals’ safety.

"I had to convince them that I wasn't on any sort of substances that might be causing this story,” she said.

Officers came to the aid of Ms Walshe, helped her corral the animals into her backyard using a bag of bread.

After assessing the situation, police also identified the ringleader of the trio, blaming the escape squarely on the pony.

"The little stallion [was] definitely the leader of the pack and had the other two following."

After a public appeal for information, Ms Walshe confirmed the owners of the animals had collected the animals and they’ve since returned to their paddock.

The trio had walked about a kilometre from their home before they decided to stop at the pub for a drink.

What's the strangest things you've ever seen in a pub?
