Patti Newton's desperate plea to her troubled son

<p>Patti Newton has issued a desperate plea to her son Matthew, who has spent two years out of the spotlight and has built a new life in America. </p> <p>According to <a href="https://www.nowtolove.com.au/womansday" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Woman's Day</em></a>, Patti is determined to see her family reunited, as she wishes for Matthew to return to Australia. </p> <p>After a series of scandals, Matthew fled the country and has since created a new life for himself in Texas with his <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/huge-matthew-newton-mystery-confirmed-during-bert-s-funeral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wife</a> Catherine Schneiderman. </p> <p>Matthew was arrested twice in 2012 following altercations in Miami, following a string of scandals in Australia, including several domestic violence allegations a charge of assault. </p> <p>Despite her son now living his best life in the US, Patti desperately wants him to return home. </p> <p>"Moving to Texas is the best thing either of them could have done. They're loving a new outdoorsy life and they're both looking and feeling great," a source told the magazine.</p> <p>"[But] Patti desperately wants them to come home to Australia."</p> <p>It's been several years since Matthew returned home, as he chose <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/why-matt-newton-won-t-be-attending-bert-s-funeral" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not to return</a> for his father Bert's funeral in 2021. </p> <p>Matthew, who suffers from bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and has a history of addiction, refrains from the spotlight after having a stint in the Australian entertainment scene with a series of TV shows and movies. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Ten</em></p>

Patti Newton's candid confession two years on from Bert's death

<p>Patti Newton has made a heartbreaking confession about her wonderful relationship with her late husband Bert. </p> <p>The veteran entertainer, 78, told the <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/life-and-relationships/bert-will-always-be-the-love-of-my-life-patti-newton-20231115-p5ek53.html?collection=p5eoey&amp;gb=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Sydney Morning Herald</em></a> that she is still haunted by Bert's death in 2021, and admitted he will always be her one true love. </p> <p>"Bert will always be the love of my life. I'll never stop thinking about him," she told the publication. </p> <p>She then revealed some of the heartfelt ways she keeps Bert's memory alive since he passed away on October 30th 2021, after a long and complicated illness.</p> <p>"When Bert was in Epworth Hospital, he had this little wooden cross. A friend of mine had given it to him. Bert used to pick it up from the tray and kiss it," she said.</p> <p>"He'd hold it for a minute and then put it down. I take it to the theatre with me and before a show I pick it up and kiss it."</p> <p>"I hold it to my heart as he did and say, 'Come on Bert, we're on.' "I'll never get over him not being here," she said at the time. "I've got photographs everywhere, and I have a chat with him most nights." </p> <p>Their extraordinary relationship, a beautiful tapestry of laughter, love and resilience, is something Patti holds dear. "We had a wonderful relationship," she said. "We had ups and downs like everybody has, but we did have a fabulous marriage. We came together, and we always had a laugh, and I think that's probably what I miss the most."</p> <p>Since Bert's passing, Patti has bravely embraced life while grappling with grief, determined not to be consumed by it. She finds strength in the memories they shared, a reminder of the love that will forever bind them.</p> <p>"People say, 'My mum lost Dad and she never leaves the house, she never puts makeup on, she never wants to go anywhere or do anything and she's become an old lady'," Patti reflected, "Well, that isn't me. Either I'm going to die with Bert or I'm going to keep living, and I think he would want me to keep living."</p> <p>Bert and Patti's love story is one for the ages, a golden couple who walked hand-in-hand for 46 extraordinary years. They exchanged vows in Camberwell on November 9, 1974, and together, they lovingly nurtured two beautiful children, Lauren and Matthew.</p> <p>As we celebrate what would have been Bert's 85th birthday, we are reminded that love knows no boundaries, not even those of time and space. "Bert would be beaming": Patti Newton's granddaughter makes TV debut

"Why would you want second best?" Patti Newton's heart-wrenching confession

<p>Patti Newton has made a heart-wrenching confession about the future of her love life, as she continues to grieve the loss of her husband. </p> <p>Speaking on 2DAY FM’s <em>Hughesy, Ed &amp; Erin</em> breakfast show on Wednesday morning, Patti opened up about life after losing her beloved husband Bert in October 2021, saying she is not open to the possibility of finding love again. </p> <p>“Never. When you have the best, why would you want second best?” Patti, 78, said.</p> <p>“He was it for me. I fell in love at a very young age and I’ve never looked at anyone else. I’ve never even kissed anyone else.”</p> <p>When asked by Hughesy what Bert would think if she dated again, Patti said he would not be very happy. </p> <p>“I reckon there would be a huge clap of thunder and probably a strike of lightning. If he could hit me, it would hit,” she joked. </p> <p>“He used to say to me, ‘You think you’d ever marry again? Yeah, you would, wouldn’t you?’ And I would say, ‘No, I wouldn’t.’ And he said, ‘I’ll keep my eye on you.’”</p> <p>Patti went on to say her life without Bert is "very difficult", admitting that her grief has "gotten worse" over time. </p> <p>“Look, it’s very difficult,” Patti said. “People say time will heal. Well, I think it’s getting worse rather than better.” </p> <p>“I do think because I’m so loved by my family and because I have grandchildren around me all the time – we only live around the corner – I see them a lot. They’re beautiful kids. I supposed that’s taken a bit of the sadness away.”</p> <p>This year would've marked the couple's 49th wedding anniversary, as Patti said they had a great relationship, despite going through ups and downs like any other couple. </p> <p>“We laughed a lot and talked a lot. We were very different people, but I think sometimes that works – it’s good if you’re different,” she said on air. “We were extremely happy. I hate people who say, ‘We never had a cross word’. Patti Newton's heartwarming Logies moment

<p dir="ltr">Patti Newton took to the Logies stage to a standing ovation, before introducing and presenting the newly renamed ‘Bert Newton award for the Most Popular Presenter.</p> <p dir="ltr">Standing in front of an early photo of herself with her late husband, Patti spoke about her grief and how she knew Bert would always be with her.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I actually didn't think I was going to be able to do this tonight, because it is still very raw and I will never get over him not being here," she told the audience.</p> <p dir="ltr">"But I know he is with me. And here... he is inside me,” she added, going on to explain the ‘Bert’ necklace she was spotted wearing on the red carpet earlier that night.</p> <p dir="ltr">"My daughter had this Bert [necklace] made for me, so I will be wearing this forever around my neck,” Patti said</p> <p dir="ltr">“I will know who I am and when I cannot remember anymore, I will say who's that? It will be Bert."</p> <p dir="ltr">Patti reflected on her late husband’s “bravery”, the great experiences he had throughout his TV career, and one of the things he really loved.</p> <p dir="ltr">"He really did live his dream," she said, "but the one thing he really loved was this show, the Logies. Patti Newton's first televised interview since losing Bert

<p>In her first televised interview since her late husband died, Patti Newton as revealed the sad question Bert asked her before he passed away. </p> <p>Appearing on <em>The Morning Show</em>, Patti recalled Bert's remarkable outlook on life, and shared a sweet conversation the couple had while he was in hospital. </p> <p>“I went in one day and he was very upset sitting in the wheelchair and I said, ‘What’s the matter? Has something happened?’ And he said, ‘No, I just want to know whether I have been a good person and whether you think I have done an OK job through all of this,’” Patti recalled.</p> <p>“And I had to say to him that out of everyone I know, all the people in his position and in his line of work, I do not know anybody else that would have handled having a leg amputated and being so, you know – not being able to move or go anywhere – so well.”</p> <p>She continued on, saying “I was so proud of him because, to be honest, it was a joy. I would go in every morning and I would ask how he was and he would say, ‘Oh, I had the most beautiful shower’. </p> <p>“I think that anybody who can be happy and feel so good about having a lovely shower, you know, you have got to admire that I think. Next up is Patti Miller, who is debuting her novel <em>True Friends</em> - <a href="https://www.uqp.com.au/books/true-friends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">out now</a>!</p> <p dir="ltr">Patti Miller is an Australian writer and holds a Bachelor in Communications and a Masters in Writing from the University of Technology. She is the author of 10 books and numerous articles and essays that have been published in national newspapers and literary magazines.</p> <p dir="ltr">In <em>True Friends</em>, a memoir, Patti reflects on the making (and unmaking) of some of her most treasured friendships, the importance of this relationship in our lives, how we choose our friends and how they shape our lives.</p> <p dir="ltr">Over60 spoke to Patti and asked about where her love of writing came from, and how her experiences helped shape her book <em>True Friends</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>1. How did you come up with the idea for <em>True Friends</em>?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">To be truthful, it came more from a feeling than an idea. I was boarding a flight in Paris and suddenly saw someone ahead of me on the air-bridge who looked like a friend who had recently ended her friendship with me. It wasn’t her, but I noted the turmoil it caused in me and once I was on the plane I started taking notes about it. I realised that while the endings of romantic relationships were often the subject of novels, memoirs, poems, song and films, the hurt of a friendship ending was rarely written about. By the time I arrived back in Sydney, I knew I had a book to write.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>2. What do you look for when making friends?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">I think I am drawn to someone’s energy – their engagement with the world, their attention to it. I value self-awareness, openness, thoughtfulness, kindness, interest in and connection to the world. And then if I find out they like books and reading – well that’s a big plus!</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>3. If you're comfortable sharing, what was the greatest friendship loss that happened to you?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">There’s two kinds of losses in friendship – a break-up, and death. A friend has recently died and I have felt that loss deeply as she was formative for me. She shaped my thinking and my life to a certain extent. But I have also lost a friendship due to break up, which was bewildering and which became a central thread in <em>True Friends</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>4. What is your advice for your readers who are looking to make new friends?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">It’s so different for everyone that I don’t think I can give advice. Generally though, it’s a matter of being open to others. Listening to them, asking questions, rather than talking about yourself too much. That way, you can start connecting to them.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>5. What is the importance in knowing oneself and one's friends?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">I’m going to quote from <em>True Friends</em> to answer this one: “Friends also share similar versions of the world... Together you and I not only acknowledge the reality of each other, but of our world. It is really there, that stand of gum trees, that mad leader, that childhood we told each other about, it all exists. Because we agree that it does.”</p> <p dir="ltr">That is, in knowing yourself and others, you re-affirm each other’s version of existence.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>6. What book(s) do you think people should read?</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Well, clearly <em>“True Friends”</em>!! But also the wonderful set of novels by Elena Ferrante, starting with <em>“My Brilliant Friend”</em>. They are the best novels about a long friendship that I’ve come across. My book is nonfiction, drawing on my own experience, but I suspect Ferrante’s novels also draw on her own experience of friendship.</p>

<p dir="ltr">On what would’ve been their 48th “engagement anniversary”, Patti Newton has paid tribute to her late husband and his proposal.</p> <p dir="ltr">Patti took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a photo of the couple when they were newly engaged aboard a cruise ship in 1974.</p> <p dir="ltr">She wrote, “Bert and I were engaged today in 1974 on the QE11.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“Donna Fayette and I had been entertaining on board for 8 months. Patti Newton shares unseen photo of Bert

Patti Newton's wishes for Bert's state funeral

<p>New details have emerged for the planned state funeral to honour the late TV legend Bert Newtown, who died on Saturday.</p> <p>His widow Patti met with representatives from the Victorian Premier's office on Monday to discuss the arrangements, as she is determined to add a dash of show business. </p> <p>The funeral is expected to be held at St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne next week, and will be live-streamed rather than televised. </p> <p>A close family friend to the Newton's and entertainment journalist Peter Ford expects a formal announcement to be made by the end of the week. </p> <p><span>“What Patti was very determined to do was to try and find that middle ground between it being a religious service, a mass, but also have the show business element as well,” he said.</span></p> <p><span>Bert and Patti's son Matt <a rel="noopener" href="https://oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/why-matt-newton-won-t-be-attending-bert-s-funeral" target="_blank">won't be attending</a> the funeral, as logistics of Covid travel plans were interfering with him returning to Australia for the service. </span></p> <p><span>Tributes for the showbiz icon have been pouring in since his death was confirmed on Saturday, with many describing him as a giant of the entertainment industry. </span></p> <p><span>Newton had been battling complications since surgery to have his leg amputated in May and is survived by his wife Patti, children Lauren and Matthew and extended family.</span></p> <p><span>The news was confirmed on Saturday night by Peter Ford on behalf of the grieving family. </span></p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr">I have very sad news ….<br />Showbiz icon Bert Newton has died at age 83.<br />It was remarkable career on TV, stage &amp; radio. Patti Newton just missed Bert’s last breath

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patti Newton has spoken of her family’s devastation following the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather over the weekend.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s very, very devastating,” she </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/melbourne-was-his-love-patti-speaks-after-berts-death/news-story/b1a21134c2ba1a1a3686ece5b2e6d1a8" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">said</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> through tears, with granddaughters Eva and Lola by her side.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The trio appeared outside their Melbourne home, with Patti saying her husband was at peace.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After she left the hospital at 7.10pm on Saturday night, Patti said she received a call telling her that her husband took his final breath just 12 minutes later.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“So I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath,” she said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“He had such a fabulous attitude. And I used to laugh, because I’d think you’re 83, you’ve got one leg, how would you go up and down stairs?</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“But I love that attitude of his, he was never going to give up and that’s what we have to take with us, don’t we girls?</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We have to just make sure that the love he gave us stays with us forever.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patti said 12-year-old Eva, nine-year-old Lola, and all of his grandchildren were the “loves of his life”, and that the family needed “a bit of moral support” while grieving.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s hard. It’s hard for this age group. (Our daughter) Lauren and Eva were out to dinner last night, just having a quick little girls’ meal. And I rang and poor Eva had to come, she didn’t go in, we felt that was too much for her,” Patti said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I can’t get that out of my mind, really, but I have to think that he’s at peace and he’s not in pain. Eva and Lola, both the loves of his life.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“A bit of moral support, that’s what we need.”</span></p> <p><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/tributes-flow-for-bert-newton" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tributes</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> have poured in for the Australian entertainment icon since the news of his passing broke, with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews describing him as an “icon, a larrikin and a born entertainer”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The premier also told Patti he would offer to hold a state funeral for her husband, which she said Bert “would love”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I said yes to a state funeral because as I said, a little boy from North Fitzroy and having success in show business and having all these wonderful accolades go his way,’’ Patti said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“And then a state funeral — Bert would love it. His mum and his sister, they would be so thrilled — and I’m thrilled for him.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’ll be very nice and it’s a wonderful gesture because he’s very Melbourne, Bert. “That’s what happiness is”: Patti Newton releases new pic of Bert

<p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p> <p>The Newton family has released a new photo of Australian entertainment legend Bert, who remains in hospital months after having surgery to remove his leg.</p> <p>He had spent six weeks in hospital after a toe infection around Christmas became a serious medical issue.</p> <p>On Sunday, Newton’s wife Patti shared a photo update on Instagram. It was huge and a very big day for everybody.”</p> <p>“He had a choice, and his choice was to live. He’s in really good spirits, he’s got a big journey ahead of him, as we all have.”</p> <p>The couple will have to remodel their house to put a bathroom on the ground floor, so Bert is able to recover at home.</p>

URGENT RECALL: Popular pasta sauce pulled from shelves

"Lots of laughs": Patti Newton updates fans on Bert's condition

Choosing to live: Patti Newton speaks out after Bert’s surgery

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just hours after the news broke of her husband’s leg amputation, Patti Newton has spoken.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bert Newton, 82, had to make a “life or death decision” in his battle with a serious health problem stemming from an infected toe.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After six weeks in hospital Newton was told he only had a few months to live unless he underwent surgery to remove the knee.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While Newton remains in Melbourne’s Epworth Hospital following the operation, wife Patti Newton spoke about their “new normal”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“He got through the operation. It was huge and a very day for everybody,” she said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“He had a choice and his choice was to live.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patti told reporters she was proud of him and that they were remaining positive.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“His words were: ‘Let’s do this with a positive attitude’,” she said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Following the surgery, the couple will have to make big adjustments as they have stairs in their home, as well as bedrooms and bathrooms on separate levels.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Patti has also suffered a recent injury and is currently in a moon boot after breaking her ankle in two places.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is the latest health scare Newton has endured over the years, including a quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2012 and a week’s stay in hospital with pneumonia in 2011.</span></p>
