Two schools cancel their productions of Grease over its outdated themes

Two high schools in Perth have cancelled their upcoming productions of the musical Grease, after students have called out the "outdated" themes of the story.

Year 7 - 10 students from Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies‘ College in the Western Australia capital were due to perform their rendition of the iconic musical later this month, but decided against it.

The young women involved in the production believed that the play was inappropriate for modern times, saying the themes of the show were sexist, offensive and anti-feminist.

The kids at Scotch College also agreed that a different production would be better suited to a modern audience, but a replacement musical has not yet been announced.

PLC Principal Cate Begbie and Acting Scotch College Headmaster Mr Peter Burt issued a brief joint statement about the decision.

“A number of PLC students raised concerns whether the musical was appropriate in modern times,” it read.

“Scotch College listened respectfully to the girls’ concerns and both schools agreed a different musical would be better suited for their joint production in 2022.”

The 1978 movie, based on the 1971 musical, tells the story of good girl Sandy Olsson and bad boy greaser Danny Zuko falling in love during a summer fling, and later finding out they go to the same high school.

In recent times, the movie has been called out for its outdated themes, as star Olivia Newton-John claimed critics need to take into account the times in which the film as made.

"It's a movie," the 72-year-old told The Guardian. "It's a story from the Fifties where things were different. Everyone forgets that, at the end, he changes for her, too. There's nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement.

"It's just a girl who loves a guy, and she thinks if she does that, he'll like her. And he thinks if he does that, she'll like him. I think that's pretty real. People do that for each other. It was a fun love story."

7 outdated words that age you

You do it every day without thinking – using words that are no longer in vogue, or, in other words, are just plain old. If you’re lucky, the people you’re with will still understand what you’re talking about. Some people may even think that it’s cool to use such “retro” words and phrases. Other times, you might have to explain just what the word means because it’s been so long since anyone used it. Either way, these words will date you.

1. Slacks

Weirdly, this word seems to have dropped out of popular or regular use, and you might find some of the younger people will scratch their heads if you ask them about the slacks they’re wearing. It seems that the word “pants” is going to do just fine.

2. Fuddy-duddy

Oh boy, it seems perfect to be using this word in this list – seeing as how it refers to someone who is somewhat old-fashioned and out of touch.

3. Tape

If you still think about “taping” something to record the memories – whether on the television or in your backyard – you’re forgetting that VHS and cassette tapes are all-but extinct now, so the phrase “taping something” is meaningless (unless you’re an athlete taking care of an injury). These days, you’re “recording” a moment, or, “making a video”.

4. Blouse

Just like their companions, “blouse” seems to have gone the way of “slacks”. You’ll likely receive less confused looks if you use the more generic term, “top”.

5. The web

If you’re referring to the internet as “the web”, or use the term “surfing” to refer to anything you do online, you’ll likely cop some earth-shaking eye rolls. These terms had their hey-day in the 1990s, but are quite on the nose now. Instead, try just referring to things you do “online”, or if you’d prefer, call it what it is and say you’re spending time “on the internet”.

6. Lovemaking/being intimate/making whoopee

If you’re speaking with a younger person in your life, and the conversation moves to dating, then instead of asking if a relationship has progressed to physical intimacy by using any of these terms, try asking if they’re “hooking up” – it’s much more widely understood.

7. Hip

Use this word to denote something as cool, and you’ll make your companions believe you’re anything but.

What’s a word you’ve used that has elicited stunned silence from your younger companions?

7 outdated makeup rules you should break

If you devoured beauty magazines as a teenager, you’ll probably remember reading some of these beauty rules.

But rather than taking them as gospel, it’s important to realise that everybody is different. The rules that work for some people may be completely untrue for others.

That’s why it’s important to know that makeup ‘rules’ should really just be considered guidelines. See what works for you, your face shape, your features and your personality.

Here are some of the popular makeup rules that we think need to be banished.

1. Only apply mascara to your top lashes

It was thought that mascara on the top and bottom lashes made your eyes look smaller, but in fact the opposite is true. By slicking it on top and bottom it can make your eyes look wider and brighter. Just ensure it is not too thick (no spider eyes please).

2. Don’t match your eye shadow to your eye colour

It’s all a matter of trial and error, but blue eyes with blue shadow can look stunning if done well. Try to go for a tone that is slightly darker than your eye colour if you can, as the contrast will make your eye colour stand out.

3. Blush is just for the apples of your cheeks

In reality it should go where you would naturally go red when flushed. For most people, that’s cheeks, a little on the bridge of the nose, and even a bit on the forehead.

4. Choose a smoky eye or a bold lip, not both

You are better off going for balance all over rather than a party up the top or bottom only. Just try not to be too heavy handed.

5. Avoid mixing gold and silver makeup

Nobody wants to look like a Transformer, but the right combination of any colour of eye shadow can look just right if you blend it well. Glitter can also be used to great effect.

6. Wear cool colours if you have cool skin tone

The same rule states that warm skin tones shouldn’t wear warm coloured makeup. We call BS on this, as the contrast you can make by mixing things up can look truly stunning.

7. False eyelashes are a strictly night time affair

With the new style of semi-permanent false lashes, you can have pony eyes all day and night if you so desire.

Have you broken any of these so-called beauty rules? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

6 outdated ideas about cruising

Don’t be tempted to dismiss cruising because of outdated ideas – there’s plenty onboard for everyone.

1. You’ll be cramped

If you haven’t set foot on a modern cruise ship, you might be thinking that you’ll be crammed into a tiny cabin, sleeping on a bunk bed and jostling for space on deck or in the restaurant. Not so. There’s a real focus now on passenger to space ratio so whether your ship carries 500 or 5,000 people, everyone will be comfortable. Cabins have come a long way too and usually start at the size of a decent hotel room and go all the way up to massive, two storey palaces.

2. You’ll be surrounded by kids and old people

Cruising is for everyone. That means you’ll find a huge mix of people onboard from families with little kids to groups of friends travelling together, older couples, multigenerational families and everyone in between. You can also do a little research and choose the right kind of ship for you so you’ll be sailing with like minded people.

3. You’ll get bored

This one is almost impossible. The latest generation of cruise ships are packed with facilities ranging from skydiving and surfing simulators to cooking schools, waterslides to wine tasting sessions. Then there’s a packed calendar of activities every day with trivia, bingo, bridge, karaoke, movies, Broadway-style shows, live music and more. The best thing about a cruise is you can do as much or as little as you like.

4. You’ll get seasick

Modern ships have state of the art stabilisers, so even in rough weather you’ll be amazed at how stable the ship is. If you are prone to seasickness you can plan ahead – book a cabin in the most stable part of the ship, use seasickness bands or medication, and keep an eye on the horizon for the first day or so.

5. You’ll gain weight

This one is really up to you. It can certainly be easy to gain weight on a cruise (some studies estimate that people gain up a half a kilo a day!), but you can make healthy choices and stay slim. At the buffet, load up your plate with fresh salads, lean meat and fruit – and avoid the dessert station. Take it easy with the bread basket at dinner and skip things laden with heavy sauces. And all ships will have a gym, so try to burn a few calories every day so you can indulge later.

6. You’ll miss out on any culture

Non-cruisers like to say that cruisers don't ever interact with local people or have any authentic experiences. While that’s largely true onboard, once you arrive in port there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in local culture. Many lines have now developed specific shore excursions that focus on culture, rather than shopping or beaches, or you can hire a private guide and see exactly what you want.

Outdated phrases we just can’t stop using

Despite using these phrases on a regular basis, when you think about it they have been outdated for years.

1. Got it on tape

It’s been a long time since VHS and cassette tapes have been in use, and even though video and audio recordings are now digital, many people still throw around the saying, “got it on tape”, when they refer to recording things. This is nowadays done on mobile phones.

2. Roll down the window

Do you have a care that has a manual wind down window? We didn’t think so. So why do we still say, “roll down the window”?

3. Hold your horses

A common phrase of yesteryear used to tell kids to slow down… we can’t seem to let go of this one either. But do you see many horse and carriages galloping around still? No.

4. That’s a Kodak moment

Ah, what a nice thought that is – they day when we’d buy a canister of film and pop it in the camera and go to the camera shop to get it developed. With the advent of digital cameras sadly photo-developing shops are dying breed. The term, “It’s a Kodak moment” has stuck, though.

While these phrases might not exactly be relevant anymore, they are just too good to stop using aren’t they!

Related links:

Meet Cooper the cavoodle who’s famous for being cute

Dog recognises mum she hasn’t seen since puppyhood

Why does this Chihuahua end the day with a neck massage?
