Grandma discovers hilarious X-rated detail on handbag

An Aussie woman was shopping on Myer’s website when she came across an unexpected find.

The Sydney grandmother was on the hunt for a handbag when she came across the store’s X-rated $19.95 Wild Fur You Australiana Tote Bag.

She decided to click on the native-theme print, but upon closer inspection, she realised the bag wasn’t as innocent as she originally thought.

The print showed native Aussie animals engaging in sexual activity.

“I am all for a cheeky joke, but I draw the line at this,” the grandmother told 7News. “Shocking!”

It appears the tote bag is “no longer available” on Myer’s website. They have a clutch version with the same controversial design for $10, however it too appears to be just as popular with an “out of stock” message on the product.

“Rock this daring clutch illustrated by Lilly Perrott and cause a scene,” the description reads.

View this post on Instagram

You guys seem to be going buck-wild for our Wild Fur You Australiana print! 🐨 It is currently exclusively available with Myer through til the end of March and then we will have the full range online with La La Land 🌿 Doing the dishes just got a whole lot more steamy 😉 Sign up to our newsletter via the link in our bio and be the first to know when these wild animals land! Illustrated by @lillymirandaperrott #wildfuryou #animals #australiananimals #australiana #lalalandshop #funny #animalsmating #matinganimals #naughty #cheeky #homewares #illustration #art #australianart #australianartist #kangaroo #koala #dingo #wombat #echidna #platypus #pinkgalah

A post shared by La La Land Cards & Gifts (@lalalandshop) on Feb 25, 2020 at 2:03pm PST

Despite it being too risqué for some, others seem to love it as the website features glowing reviews.

“Great gift, you may even snag one for yourself,” one person wrote, adding that the bag is of “good quality”, “large and uniquely Australian”.

Another said the purse has a “durable quality to the zipper”.

“The print is certainly hilarious and went famously well when given to a friend who likes telling green jokes,” the person continued.

“Unexpectedly raunchy but completely hilarious! Myer boss calls out department store's big problem in a few blunt words

One of the most senior managers at Myer has given stern words to staff, calling out the poor customer service culture at the struggling department store.

In a leaked letter to staff, the store's general manager, Tony Sutton, summarised one of the department store’s greatest shortcomings in five words: “I don’t work for Myer”.

In Mr Sutton’s letter, he called out the underperformance of staff in concessions or “brand partners”. Brand partners are those who work in Myer stores but are officially employed by other companies, such as Royal Doulton, Dyson or Cue.

Many customers have been left frustrated by brand partners who refuse to assist them if they are after a product that is not directly related to the brand they are employed by.

As Myer starts its mid-year sale in the hope of attracting customers, Mr Sutton said the poor customer service culture was “unacceptable” and staff who continued like this could be barred from the shop floor, reported news.com.au.

“An ‘I don’t work for Myer’ attitude, where brand partner team members refuse to assist customers in Myer stores is unacceptable. We expect Myer and brand partner team members to work in partnership in store, operating as one team,” he told staff.

“Unfortunately, feedback indicates that customers continue to experience this poor level of service.

“Failure to meet these standards … will be viewed seriously and may result in Myer requiring that you do not return the relevant team member to work at Myer,” Mr Sutton wrote in the memo dated May 14.

Myer customers have vented their frustration about their department store’s staff online.

One shopper wrote, “Is there anything more difficult to do in Australia in 2018 than find someone to give your money to in Myer?"

“The answer to (Myer’s) financial woes may be, I don’t know, allowing customers to buy things easily and quickly?” said another.

Consultant with Retail Doctor Group, Brian Walker, told news.com.au that the newly appointed chief executive John King must make staffing a priority.

“The overwhelming criticism of Myer from customers is that they can’t find any staff,” Mr Walker said.

“The board are going to have to take a punt here, put financial pain before gain and put more people working in stores.

“Mr King’s first step is to overdeliver on service levels and kill customers with kindness.”

Do you shop at Myer? Is this the end of Myer?

They have been in competition with one another for years, but now the battle between retail giants Myer and David Jones could be about to end – with the South African company that owns David Jones, Woolworths Holdings (no connection to Woolworths in Australia), reportedly preparing a bid of $300 million for its longstanding business foe.

If it goes ahead, this would mean Australia would be left with just one high-end department store chain.

While the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), has been hugely circumspect about such a venture – mainly because it would remove both retail giant’s biggest competitor, it’s possibly too tempting for the regulators to turn down this time, due to the intense competition of online shopping and reduced consumer spending.

If a merger between David Jones and Myer does get the green light, you can expect to see stores closing and most likely one of the famous brands shutting up shop for good – with the victim being thrown on to the retail scrapheap in all probability Myer.

“There’s no advantage for David Jones in retaining the Myer brand,” Marketing Focus director Barry Urquhart told news.com.au.

“It will be like when Qantas took over TAA and almost the first thing that happened was the Qantas name took over.”

Last month, Myer announced an almost half billion-dollar loss for the first half of the financial year. In hindsight, David Jones is not necessarily a star performer, but the retail giant is still making a profit.

“Something has to happen because the market can’t sustain two department stores, so the logical piece is for Woolworths [David Jones] to buy out Myer,” Retail Doctor Group consultant Brian Walker told news.com.au.

“Australia is the third most over-shopped country in the word with something like one shop for every 325 people, and there’s just too many department stores.

“Myer has been in decline for 20 years, so creating a $5 billion department store chain with DJs will mean better negotiations with suppliers and landlords,” Walker added.

What do you think about the possible demise of Myer? Will you be sad to see the retail giant go?

Amazon has (finally) launched in Australia

After months of anticipation (it feels like years) US retail giant Amazon has finally launched in Australia, with local retailers bracing themselves for the impact.

The world’s biggest online retailer has kicked off its local offering, with massive discounts on millions of items including electronics, toys, clothing, beauty and accessories.

This news comes as “thousands” of local suppliers have reportedly signed up to sell their wares through Amazon Marketplace, that generates roughly half its global sales.

“Focusing on customers and the long-term are key principles in Amazon’s approach to retailing,” Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger said on Tuesday.

“By concentrating on providing a great shopping experience and by constantly innovating on behalf of customers, we hope to earn the trust and the custom of Australian shoppers in the years to come.”

Since 2013, Aussie shoppers accessing the local version of the site could only access a limited selection of Kindle e-books and audiobooks, but now the full Amazon offering, excluding the grocery delivery service, will be available.

While traditional retailers like David Jones, Myer, Harvey Norman and JB HiFi are expected to take a sales hit, the real winner of the move could be Australian consumers.

University of Chicago economist and Freakonomics author Steven Levitt says, “In the US, the combination of Amazon and Walmart, those two are incredibly efficient and brutal competitors, which as a consequence leads to very low prices combined with great service for customers, which makes customers go in droves.”

“Consumers are greatly benefited by both the direct effect of those companies and the services they provide, but also the indirect effect, because it puts a lot of pressure on competitors to be better.

“I sure would not want to be a local business having to compete with Amazon. Amazon is brutal. They’re good at what they do. If I were a business owner, I’d be trying to think about how to work with Amazon as opposed to trying to fight them.”

What are your thoughts? Are you excited about the arrival of Amazon?

Australian Geographic stores saved by last-minute sale
