Taylor Swift receives honorary doctorate

Grammy-award winner Taylor Swift has another achievement to her name, as she has received an honorary doctorate from the New York University.

The pop music icon was honoured in the sector of fine arts in a ceremony at Yankee Stadium, as she addressed the graduating class of 2022.

Sporting her signature red lipstick and newly awarded honorary robe, Swift joked to the thousands of graduates assembled, "I'm 90 percent sure the main reason I'm here is because I have a song called 22."

"I never got to have a normal college experience per se. I went to public high school until 10th grade and then finished my education doing home school work on the floor of airport terminals," Swift said in her commencement speech.

Swift went on to share worldly advice with the new graduates as they prepare for life outside of university.

"You've worked and struggled and sacrificed and studied and dreamed your way here today. I won't tell you what to do because nobody likes that, but I will however give you life hacks for when I was starting out my dreams as a career," she said.

"Never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth."

Swift concluded her speech by telling graduates that making mistakes is inevitable but "when hard things happen to us, we will recover, we will learn from it, we will grow more resilient because of it."

"As long as we are fortunate enough to be breathing, we will breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep and breathe out. I am a doctor now so I know how breathing works," she said.

"I hope you know how proud I am to share this day with you.

"We're doing this together so let's just keep on dancing like we're the class of 22."

Terminally ill man graduates college alongside his granddaughter

A grandfather-granddaughter duo from Texas have shared a heart-warming milestone together.

Melanie Salazar, 23, and her grandfather Rene Neira, 88, have both graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) alongside each other.

Rene first began his higher education in the 1950s, but when he fell in love and started a family, he was unable to finish his studies in the traditional four-year span.

Throughout the years, Rene took part in online classes, but decided to re-enroll in college in 2016: the same year his granddaughter began her freshman year at the same school.

"It just so happened that he wanted to go back to school again at the same time that I was starting." 88-year-old grandpa becomes China’s oldest university graduate

At an age where most people are well and truly retired, Zhang Guohan has just become the oldest person ever to graduate from university in China. Last week, Zhang received his bachelor’s degree in Culture Industry Management from Jiangsu Open University.

Surprisingly, Zhang wasn’t the only octogenarian in his graduating class – 86-year-old Xu Hesheng also completed a degree, along with 17 other seniors.

The two elderly gentlemen’s academic success is due in part to the university’s introduction of a program to help Chinese seniors further their education and learn how to use new technologies like computers and smartphones. In fact, the university reportedly boasts up to 200 older students.

Zhang says it was his lifelong love of learning that drove him to enrol in university. “I had no knowledge of computers when I enrolled for Fundamentals of Computer Application,” he told China Daily of his classes. “To better understand the course, I had to repeatedly ask the teacher and the students for help. After overcoming the problem of poor memory caused by age and slow learning of computer operation, now I am used to online distance learning on computers.”

How inspiring! Tell us in the comments below, have you continued your education in your senior years?

Related links:

90-year-old to graduate university with a PhD

87-year-old great grandma graduates from high school

Free online resources to keep your mind active over 60

90-year-old to graduate university with a PhD

Tasmanian teacher Joan Webb, is about to achieve an incredible feat, earning her PhD from the University of Tasmania at the age of 90. She already received her Masters degree three years ago, and is on track to go one step further when she graduates with a doctorate this weekend.

Webb has spent decades teaching both in the UK and in Australia, before turning to aged care facilities to run classes with elderly and sick people wanting to keep their minds active. “I found it most demanding and fascinating and a wonderful experience,” she told the ABC of the first time she visited the facilities. “There are people in high care who have lost a massive amount of their physical capacity, and still have the most amazing ideas and creativity within them.”

She began teaching creative writing in 2013 in these aged care homes, before switching her focus to poetry, finding the residents more receptive to its shorter format. “It was the most exciting experience probably of my whole life,” she said. Webb’s doctoral thesis, titled “I only look forward to Mondays”, discusses the importance of empowering elderly people (particularly aged care patients) with creative and intellectual pursuits.

“It's very easy to sit in an armchair, switch the tele on and throw your life away like that,” Webb says of her decision to go to university. “As you do it and as you have this control, you get fascinated by the subject, and in the end you can't put it down and you just want to go on and on.”

Congratulations, Joan! Did you attend university later in life? 87-year-old great grandma graduates from high school

It’s certainly been a long time coming, but a great-grandmother from Utah in the US has finally graduated from High School after waiting over 70 years.

87-year-old Rolleen Littlefield Taysom dropped out of high school in 1944 when her father passed her. With her widowed mother tasked with the job of caring for eight children, Taysom selflessly dropped out of high school to help provide for her siblings.

But now, thanks to the efforts of daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter Taysom finally got the chance to graduate that she deserved.

Taysom’s great-granddaughter Shae Spencer was also set to graduate, so the women got into contact with the superintendent from Alpine School district and asked if Taysom could join the ceremony as well. And he was more than happy to let them.

Taysom, walked arm-in-arm with her great-granddaughter, completing a process she once thought would never happen. The lined up with the graduating class and everyone gave Taysom the standing ovation that she deserved.

What a lovely story? Do you have a similar one you’d like to share?
