Julian Assange's emotional message to Anthony Albanese

Julian Assange has shared an emotional message with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after he touched down in Australia for the first time in over a decade.

On Wednesday, the WikiLeaks founder pleaded guilty to a single count of espionage in exchange for his freedom after a 14-year long legal battle.

After fronting a federal court in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Pacific, on Wednesday morning, Assange then boarded a plane to Australia and landed in Canberra on Wednesday night.

When he landed, Assange was greeted by a throng of waiting media and a small group of supporters, who he dodged as he headed straight toward his wife, 40-year-old lawyer Stella Assange who is the mother of his two sons, Gabriel and Max.

After the emotional family reunion, the 52-year-old spoke with Anthony Albanese, telling him simply, "You saved my life."

Mr Assange’s lawyer Jennifer Robinson went on to say that his statement "wasn't an exaggeration".

Ms Robinson told the media that her client is “absolutely delighted” to arrive home following “long and complex” negotiations with the government.

She said the development was a “huge win” for Australia and showed that Mr Albanese had “stood up to our ally”, the US.

“That Julian came home today is the product of 14 long years of legal battles, political advocacy and ongoing campaigning — not just by us, but by so many people in this community,” she said.

Mr Albanese later tweeted a picture of himself on the phone with the caption, “Earlier tonight I was pleased to speak with Julian Assange to welcome him home to his family in Australia."

“His arrival home ends a long-running legal process. I want to express my appreciation to the United States and the United Kingdom for their efforts in making this possible."

“As Prime Minister, I have been clear – regardless of what you think of his activities, Mr Assange’s case had dragged on for too long. I have clearly and consistently – at every opportunity and at every level – advocated for Mr Assange’s case to be concluded.”

"Not a day goes by": Lisa Curry's touching birthday message

Former Australian swimming champion Lisa Curry has touched hearts with an emotional tribute to her late daughter, Jaimi, on what would have been her 37th birthday.

Jaimi, the eldest daughter of Curry and her ex-husband, Ironman legend Grant Kenny, passed away in 2020 at the age of 33.

Curry, a three-time Olympian, took to Instagram to share a series of poignant family photos, capturing cherished moments and memories. "Happy birthday to our beautiful Jaimi. The day you were born changed our lives forever," she wrote.

Among the shared photos, one features a beaming Kenny holding newborn Jaimi, adorned in pink with big blue eyes. "Our little poppet dressed in pink of course with big blue eyes," Curry reminisced. "You may be gone from our sight, but never from our thoughts and heart."

Another touching image shows Jaimi as a baby with a cheeky grin, followed by a beautiful mother-daughter snap of Curry and Jaimi in her youth, and finally, a radiant Jaimi as an adult. The last photo, a sombre reminder of the daily reality for Curry, Kenny, and countless families who have lost loved ones, shows framed memories forever captured in photographs. "Not a day goes by... We all miss you... Happy Birthday, my love," Curry added, signing the post with "Mumma".

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Curry AO (@lisacurry)

Jaimi's battle with an eating disorder spanned nearly two decades, culminating in her tragic death from multiple organ failure on September 14, 2020, with her devoted parents by her side. In a tearful 2022 interview with ABC's Australian Story, Curry recounted the heartbreaking moment Jaimi passed away. "If it's any consolation, we were able to be with her when she took her last breath," Curry said, recalling the profound bond of being present at both Jaimi's first and last breaths.

By her early 20s, Jaimi had confided in her family about her eating disorder, prompting them to seek treatment. Unfortunately, her struggle evolved into a battle with alcohol addiction, compounding her challenges. "The disordered eating turned into an addiction, so then she kind of had a triple whammy, you know, not eating, bingeing, and drinking, all at once," Curry revealed.

Despite her struggles, Jaimi possessed remarkable talents in cooking, photography, and styling. Curry lamented that Jaimi never recognised her own worth. "But she was. We could see it. She couldn't see it," Curry said.

Curry and Kenny, who were married from 1996 to 2017, also share two other children, daughter Morgan and son Jett. As they remember Jaimi on her birthday, the family continues to honour her memory and celebrate the joy she brought into their lives.

Images: Instagram

Condolence messages for every situation

When someone you care about has lost someone they care about, it’s important to reach out and show your love. “We’re hard-wired as human beings to connect with others, especially when we’re grieving,” says Abigail Nathanson, a licensed social worker and professor of grief and trauma at New York University. “Being able to talk about the pain and loss and receive support from others is an essential part of the grieving process.” While you may eventually engage in longer discussions, condolence messages are the first step after any loss.

These messages of sympathy are a simple and beautiful way to connect with a grieving loved one. But even though death and grief are universal experiences, it can be hard to find the right things to say to someone who is grieving or know what to write in a condolence card—probably because there aren’t any words that can take away their pain.

But it’s proper etiquette to say something rather than to stay silent. Otherwise, the person who’s grieving might think you don’t care.

What can you say to comfort someone who’s lost a loved one?

“Just like there is no one ‘right’ way to grieve, there is no one script for what to say to someone who has experienced a great loss,” Nathanson says. “However we do know that there are some things that many people find comforting and supportive.”

When thinking of what to say when someone dies, Nathanson offers these tips:

Lead with sympathy or empathy.

Offer to listen (and then listen without interrupting).

Don’t offer banal platitudes, like: “Everything will turn out for the best.”

Don’t tell them how to feel, like: “Your father wouldn’t want you to be sad.”

Reinforce your love and support for them.

Offer to help in meaningful ways.

Don’t offer advice unless they ask for it.

How to write a condolence message

“Remember that the goal of a condolence message is not to talk the person out of being sad or to ‘cure’ their grief,” Nathanson says. “It’s to offer love and support during a trying time.”

Expressing condolences in person is incredibly powerful, but if you can’t be there with them, sending a condolence message is the next best thing. In this digital age, you have lots of options.

Video messages offer the added bonus of face-to-face connection.

Condolence text messages are an immediate way to reach out.

Email is a great way to share longer thoughts, including pictures or memories of the loved one. They can also be read at the person’s leisure.

Handwritten notes show extra care and are often sentimental keepsakes.

Comments on social media show public support and allow you to interact with others who may be grieving the loss as well.

Regardless of which method you choose to convey your love and support, keep your message relatively short. Grief can induce brain fog, making it difficult to concentrate on long messages, Nathanson says. And send your message as soon as you can (but better late than never!), and consider attaching it to one of these beautiful sympathy gifts.

Short condolence messages

To help you find the right words, here’s a list of heartfelt short condolence messages messages. Your kind words will be appreciated more than you know.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

My heart breaks for you.

This hurts, and it sucks!

You are in my prayers.

My heart is with you at this time.

I love you, and I’m here for you.

I’m so sorry you are hurting.

Sending love and peace.

You are in my thoughts.

May you find comfort at this time.

Blessings for you and your loved ones.

I’m with you during this difficult time.

I hope you can feel my love.

Love and support for you and yours.

I wish I could give you the biggest hug.

Sending you peaceful and loving vibes.

Praying you feel comforted.

You can cry on my shoulder.

I’m devastated for you.

My heart goes out to you at this difficult time.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Kate Middleton reveals cancer diagnosis in heartfelt message

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has revealed her battle with cancer in a heartfelt video message. The British royal shared her diagnosis and the subsequent journey she's embarking upon with the unwavering support of her family, notably her husband, Prince William, the heir to the throne.

The revelation comes after weeks of speculation swirling on social media regarding her health and whereabouts since her hospitalisation in January for undisclosed abdominal surgery. Until now, the details surrounding her condition were shrouded in secrecy, with Kensington Palace providing minimal information, assuring the public that the ailment was not cancer-related.

In her brave disclosure, Kate, as she is affectionately known, beseeched for "time, space and privacy" as she navigates through preventive chemotherapy. The 42-year-old princess, who had been absent from public view since Christmas, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from well-wishers.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery," the Princess said. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

“This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."

The decision to delay the public announcement of her diagnosis was primarily motivated by a desire to shield her three young children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – from the tumult of media speculation and ensure they were informed in a manner suitable for their tender age.

“Most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok," Kate explained.

The timing of her announcement, coinciding with the end of the school term and the commencement of the royal family's Easter holiday, underscores the meticulous consideration afforded to every aspect of this deeply personal revelation.

Image: Supplied

King Charles delivers heartfelt message amidst cancer treatment

In times of adversity, the power of unity and compassion shines through, and this sentiment has never been more evident than in the heartfelt message delivered by King Charles amidst his cancer treatment.

As news of his diagnosis spread, an outpouring of support enveloped the King from all corners of the Commonwealth. His gratitude and appreciation for this unwavering kindness were palpable as he addressed the nations in a video message, unable to personally attend the 2024 Commonwealth Day celebrations due to his health.

"I have been most deeply touched by your wonderfully kind and thoughtful good wishes for my health and, in return, can only continue to serve you, to the best of my ability, throughout the Commonwealth," he said.

"My belief in our shared endeavours and in the potential of our people remains as sure and strong as it has ever been. I have no doubt that we will continue to support one another across the Commonwealth as, together, we continue this vital journey."

The absence of the Princess of Wales, still in recovery from surgery, served as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. In such moments, the strength of familial bonds and the support of a caring community become invaluable lifelines.

As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth, we reflect not only on its historical significance but also on its enduring relevance in today's world. The theme of "One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth" resonates deeply as we navigate the challenges of the modern age together.

King Charles' words remind us of the interconnectedness of our shared humanity, transcending borders and differences. He likened the Commonwealth to the wiring of a house, where each nation contributes to the collective energy and strength that sustains us all:

"As I have said before, the Commonwealth is like the wiring of a house, and its people, our energy and our ideas are the current that runs through those wires. Together and individually we are strengthened by sharing perspectives and experiences, and by offering and borrowing the myriad ways we have each tackled the challenges of our time. This is true both at the level of nations and, indeed, at the local level. We recognise today that our diversity is our greatest strength."

In facing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and socioeconomic shifts, the importance of collaboration and cooperation cannot be overstated. King Charles eloquently underscored the power of diversity as our greatest strength, recognising that it is through our varied perspectives and experiences that we find innovative solutions to complex problems.

Image: Youtube

"I was shocked": Lisa Wilkinson's text messages shown in court

A series of explosive texts revealed in court have shown how Lisa Wilkinson's controversial Logies speech led to her untimely dismissal from The Project.

The texts are contained in an affidavit that Wilkinson and her lawyers have submitted to the Federal Court in relation to a dispute over who will pay her million-dollar legal fees after being sued by Bruce Lehrmann for defamation.

In an affidavit to the Federal Court, Wilkinson said she was shocked when she found out she was being let go from The Project, after she discovered her agent Nick Fordham had a meeting with Network Ten CEO Beverley McGarvey.

“I was shocked, embarrassed and deeply disappointed by Ms McGarvey’s decision to remove me from The Project,” she said.

“At that time, my most recent contract as co-host of The Project had only been signed 11 months before and still had more than two years to run.”

Speaking of her agent's meeting, she said, “He told me that Ms McGarvey had informed him that Ten was doing a ‘rebrand’ of The Project with a number of hosting changes. He told me that she had said that those hosting changes included me."

“He also told me that she had said that, because there had been too much heat on me in the months since the Logies speech – and, as a result, too much ‘brand damage’ – it was best that I be removed from my hosting role on The Project.”

When she said farewell to The Project in 2022, Wilkinson blamed the “targeted toxicity” of sections of the media.

“The last six months have not been easy,” Wilkinson told viewers of the panel show when she announced she would be leaving the show.

“And the relentless, targeted toxicity by some sections of the media has taken a toll not just on me but on people I love."

“I have had a ball,” she said. “But for me right now it’s time for a change. To be clear. I’m not leaving Ten and we’re looking at some very exciting work ideas ahead.”

In the affidavit, she says that Ms McGarvey approved Wilkinson’s on-air explanation for her departure and suggested that they “sound very authentic”.

“I said to her that this decision to remove me from The Project would result in yet more negative publicity for me, for The Project, and for Ten, particularly if my sudden departure was without explanation,” Wilkinson said.

Ms McGarvey told Wilkinson in texts “Perfect delivery, you spoke from the heart.”

“It was a beautiful sentiment and you are so generous to your colleagues. Thank you. The media should all be kind, you deserve it.”

From the balcony, Queen Mary, alongside her husband King Frederik X, waved to the cheering crowd, radiating happiness and a sense of unity. Kochie's brutal message to Baby Boomers

David Koch has shared his brutal thoughts on the housing crisis and rising interest rates, claiming millennials have been dealt the "short end of the stick", while boomers have been spared.

The former Sunrise host, who is now the Economic Director at Compare the Market, said young borrowers are copping the brunt of rising interest rates and soaring inflations.

“If you bought your home in early 2022 under the pretence that interest rates would stay low for longer, you’ve now been lumped with the short end of the stick,” Mr Koch said.

He went on to say young people had difficulty generating any decent savings due to record rental prices and cost-of-living, and those that can scrape together a deposit on a home now face onerous interest charges.

Recent data from Compare the Market found homeowners who bought their homes at the peak of the market in early 2022 were far worse off compared to those who bought three years earlier.

Those who also bought property before the Covid lockdown have also benefited from a rise in their equity, as property prices have significantly increased over the past four years.

Kochie said the repayment hike as a result of rising interest rates was a "tough pill" for young Aussies who had no time to accrue a strong savings buffer.

Given these factors, Kochie said many Aussie baby boomers have been spared the pain of rising interest rates.

"Meanwhile, a lot of mature Australians have missed this pain altogether after selling their properties at the peak and having reaped the benefits over more equity for years," he said.

"A lot of mature Australians have been shielded from the rate rises, and it's already widely believed that their spending drove inflation."

A recent report from CommBank iQ found that baby boomers spending on luxuries appears to be further fuelling Australia's inflation crisis as millennials are forced to cut back on essentials.

This goes a long way to explaining why the current cycle of interest rate rises are not dampening inflation as expected, as the new big spenders are older people who own properties outright and are therefore unaffected by rate rises.

Boomers are are going on holidays and dining out more often, while millennials, battling higher rents and mortgage repayments, rare being forced to reduce their spending to cope with the worst cost of living crisis in a generation.

Koch said, "It's time policy-makers should be asking: how could the pressure be more evenly spread?"

Aussie baby boomers have long claimed that they had to make the same sacrifices when they were buying their first homes, given the home loan rate in 1989 to 1990 was at 17 per cent, compared to today's six per cent variable rates.

However, Kochie debunked this claim, saying current house prices are far higher when measured against average salaries, and that level was only accelerating, far outpacing wages growth.

"Back in the 80s, the average cost of an Aussie house was $70,000, now it's $700,000 - ten times more expensive," he said.

The financial guru explained how in the 1980s the average salary was $19,000, compared with $94,000 in 2023.

"So in the 80s, the price of a house was four times the average person's income," he said.

"In 2023, it's eight times the average Aussie salary."

Kochie urged mortgage holders hit with higher repayments to call their banks and explore whether refinancing to a lower-rate loan is possible.

"We urge people in mortgage pain to reduce the interest on their repayments as much as possible by shopping around for a better deal," Koch said.

"When every dollar counts, 2024 should be the year of the new lender."

King Charles' final message to Barry Humphries hours before he died

In a touching tribute to the late comedian Barry Humphries, the King has sent a personal message to be read out at the state memorial. The King, who shared a close friendship with the legendary comedian, expressed his deep sadness following Humphries' passing at the age of 89.

The King, at 75, was not just a monarch but a friend who spoke to Humphries mere hours before his passing on April 22. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson at the time conveyed the King's profound sadness and mentioned that he was privately reaching out to Mr Humphries' family.

Charles' connection with Humphries extended beyond formalities. The duo's friendship was a source of joy and laughter, exemplified by Humphries' memorable performance as Dame Edna at the 2013 Royal Variety Performance.

Lord Archer, a close friend of Humphries, has also revealed that the King attended many of the comedian's shows, even bringing his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, backstage when they were young boys.

The Australian newspaper also revealed recently that Charles sent Humphries an email just hours before his passing, with film director Bruce Beresford sharing the story:

"Barry said, 'Well, I always admired him. We always got on well and I really liked his company and enjoyed being with him'," Mr Beresdord told the newspaper. "Barry was one of those people, he had a great capacity for friendship. He was so interested in people."

Now, years later, the state memorial service at the Sydney Opera House promises to be a fitting tribute to Humphries as family, friends and fans gather to celebrate the comedian's illustrious career. The Australian Chamber Orchestra, a favourite of Humphries, will perform, adding a touch of elegance to the proceedings. The presence of Humphries' widow, Lizzie Spender, and his children at the memorial underscores the profound impact he had on those closest to him.

Humphries' association with royalty was not limited to the King; he was a mainstay at royal performances, meeting Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana at various events. The comedian's contributions were acknowledged with a CBE by the late Queen in 2007, and he continued to be a familiar face at royal gatherings, including a delightful encounter with Queen Camilla at The Oldie of the Year Awards in 2021.

The state memorial, with its mix of laughter, music and shared memories, will undoubtedly be a fitting tribute to a man who brought joy and laughter to millions around the world.

Images: Getty

"We are so grateful for the incredible medical team looking after him. Thank you for all the love and support."

Earlier, Barnes bravely shared the news that the bacterial infection had spread to his heart. Despite this unexpected challenge, he faced the situation with courage and underwent open heart surgery to clear out the infection and replace a valve. The infection had affected a valve replaced years ago due to a congenital defect.

Barnes, who was set to headline the Rock the Boat 2023 cruise festival before falling ill, reflected on his recent peak fitness just weeks prior. The sudden turn of events required adjustments to upcoming shows, causing some frustration for the singer. However, his son, David Campbell, reassured fans on the Today show, emphasising his father's frustration for the fans and passion for supporting the music industry.

"He is in wonderful hands," Campbell said, expressing confidence in the medical team. Barnes' son also encouraged fans to reach out to him on social media, assuring everyone that the rock legend would make a great recovery.

As the music community rallies around Barnes, sending waves of positivity and healing energy, we look forward to a speedy recovery and many more years of rock and roll from the indomitable Jimmy Barnes!

Images: Instagram

"Each bauble represents a life lost": Haunting Christmas tree sends powerful message

As the holiday season approaches, a haunting symbol of despair has once again taken root at Victoria Police headquarters – carrying with it a message of melancholy that we are unaccustomed to at this normally festive time of year.

Instead of joyous ornaments and twinkling lights, a Christmas tree adorned with glistening blue baubles now stands as a remarkably poignant testament to the road death carnage that has befallen the state throughout 2023.

These beautiful baubles, each etched with the name and age of those lost on Victoria's roads this year, tell a grim tale of grief and loss. With the toll reaching 274 by December 6, it marks the darkest year for the state since 2008.

In a moving video accompanying the dressing of the tree, Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir implored the public to drive cautiously during the Christmas period, desperately hoping to prevent the addition of any more baubles to this sorrowful tree.

"This Christmas tree is unlike any other; it's one we don't want to see decorated," Commissioner Weir soberly explained. "Each bauble represents a life lost, a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. Please, drive safely this festive period. Take care, have conversations with your loved ones, and remember the responsibility you bear when behind the wheel."

November alone witnessed the loss of 35 lives on Victorian roads, marking it as the worst month this year. In response, the police are intensifying road policing operations throughout December in an attempt to curb further tragedies.

In a bid to address the escalating death toll, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has launched the initiative "Stop kidding yourself. If you drink, don't drive," running from December 4 to the end of January.

Shockingly, it has also been revealed that one in five individuals killed on Victorian roads had a blood alcohol concentration of .05 or higher.

TAC CEO Tracey Slatter also called on the urgent need for a cultural shift, challenging the notion that driving after consuming any amount of alcohol should be deemed "normal".

"Many people think they can manage their blood-alcohol level with vague rules handed down through generations," she said. "But the only way to avoid the risk entirely is to completely separate drinking and driving."

As the Christmas tree of remembrance continues to grow with each passing day, it stands as a poignant symbol of the lives lost on Victoria's roads, imploring society to reflect, change and prioritise the safety of every journey.

Images: Victoria Police
