“Our Disney princess”: Grace Irwin’s magical milestone

Bindi Irwin and her family were all smiles on a recent trip to “the most magical place on Earth”, with some of their favourite highlights documented on social media for their fans to enjoy the occasion right along with them.

The day was something of a milestone for two-year-old Grace, who was making her first trip to Disneyland alongside Bindi and Chandler.

“Our Disney princess visited the most magical place on Earth for the very first time,” Bindi wrote. “My. Heart.”

In the clip accompanying the caption, a series of snaps and short videos played out, though two things remained constant throughout - the delight on their faces, and the wonder on young Grace’s.

It opened with a sweet family picture in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, a popular location in the centre of the park for capturing the all-important Disney portrait.

Next, Grace had been introduced to a bubble wand in her dad’s arms, before the family were captured flying through the air on Disney’s Dumbo The Flying Elephant ride.

From there, Grace was pictured exploring the park - on her own feet and from her mum’s embrace - as well as dancing to live music, meeting some iconic Disney characters, hosting her very own princess tea party, and experiencing the wonder of the world famous It’s a Small World attraction.

All, it appears, picture perfect items on any Disneyland agenda.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Anywhere we can love and protect animals.”

And, of course, Robert Irwin had to get in on the celebration, sharing a series of hearts in response to his sister’s post - just weeks after sharing his own happy snap with the youngest Irwin wildlife warrior, too.

Images: Instagram

"We said YES!": Rebel Wilson drops major news about personal life

Rebel Wilson has announced her engagement to her now-fiancee, Ramona, Agruma, on Instagram.

In one of the snaps, the 42-year-old star showed off the engagement ring as the couple engaged in a kiss.

“We said YES! Thank you @tiffanyandco for the stunning ring and to Bob Iger and the incredible team at Disneyland @disneyweddings for pulling off this magical surprise!” Wilson wrote.

Wilson also shared a photo taken not long after she proposed during a trip to Disneyland.

The actress expressed her gratitude to Tiffany & Co. for the ring and to Bob Iger and the team at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings for allowing her proposal to be all the more magical.

Wilson and Agruma can be seen wearing matching striped jumpers while the actress got down on one knee in front of Disney’s Magic Castle.

Friends of Wilson, including Kathy Hilton and Lindsey Vonn, shared their well wishes for the happy couple on the Instagram post.

The actress and Agruma were first introduced to one another by a mutual friend in late 2021.

Wilson spoke to People, recalling that she and her now-fiancee, who was not identified at the time of the interview, had made an effort to establish a genuine connection before their first date.

“We spoke on the phone for weeks before meeting. And that was a really good way to get to know each other. It was a bit old-school in that sense — very romantic,” Wilson told People.

The actress also commented that she felt much more supported in her new relationship.

“There were times — I'm not saying with all my exes, they're great — but there were some times that I was probably putting up with that I shouldn't have. So it feels different to be in a really healthy relationship,” she said.

The couple went on to make numerous public appearances with one another in early 2022 but did not confirm they were romantically involved at the time.

The pair made their relationship Instagram official in June 2022.

Wilson and Agruma’s later collaborated on a collection of loungewear called R&R club, which was released in November.

Engagement rumours began to circulate that same month, but Wilson publicly denied all claims.

Wilson surprised many when she revealed she had become a mother to her daughter, Royce Lillian, who was welcomed via surrogate on November 7 2022.

Prior to Royce’s arrival, Agruma threw a baby shower for Wilson, and the actress described her to People as “so amazing and such a great partner.”

On a recent podcast on Life Uncut, Wilson shared that while her family was happy for the couple, Agruma’s family weren’t as supportive.

“Ramona's family hasn't been as accepting. And so in many respects, it has been a lot harder on her to have to make the news public,” she said.

She also mentioned she wanted to be able to connect with Agruma’s loved ones in the future.

“I feel so sad to see what happened with her family over it. Hopefully, people will change their attitudes about things,” she said.

Without free-to-air, we wouldn’t have Doctor Who in the archives. What will we lose when it moves to Disney?

The announcement the BBC will move the global streaming of Doctor Who from free to air channels to Disney+ will change the viewing habits for millions of people internationally.

In Australia, Doctor Who will be removed from the ABC, in New Zealand from TVNZ, and in America from BBC America.

According to reports, the BBC and Disney+ are thrilled with the deal. The show’s chief writer Russell T. Davies has said this new relationship will allow the show to “launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

But what about the traditional homes Doctor Who has in other countries, which often kept rare Doctor Who episodes safe which the BBC discarded in the 1970s, before the BBC began archiving the videotapes of their old black and white programs. Now the BBC keeps everything, but once wiped or threw out tapes when they thought the programs had no further value.

Black and white broadcasting for the world

The first people anywhere in the world to see Doctor Who were British viewers of the BBC’s television service on November 23 1963. Any one with a television licence could have watched and several million people did, having just learned of President John F Kennedy’s assassination.

The rest of the world did not have to wait long. In the mid-1960s television was mostly black and white and the BBC’s 405 line productions could be broadcast by technicians in television stations around the world.

West Australians first saw Doctor Who in January 1965. Shortly after, the ABC in other capitals began to broadcast the series.

The global broadcasting of Doctor Who has created different viewing patterns for diverse audiences.

Famously in Britain, Doctor Who was part of a Saturday evening “tea time” experience for school children: a line-up of football, light entertainment and drama from early afternoon to late night. Doctor Who kept its place as the mainstay of the BBC’s Saturday line-up almost without interruption from 1963 to 1989.

But for Australians like me, Doctor Who was viewed in a different way. As a child of the 1980s, Doctor Who was in an unmissable weekday afternoon line-up on the ABC.

Australians weren’t watching exactly the same episodes as their counterparts watching the BBC. Early Doctor Who is startlingly violent, and early on the show gained its enduring reputation as so scary kids watched from behind the sofa. These black and white episodes feature mass killings, hangings, shootings, attempted and actual rape, psychotic attacks by a scissor wielding woman, and more.

Doctor Who episodes broadcast in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s had many of these juicy moments were edited out by the Commonwealth Film Censorship Board.

Oddly, this means Australian television archives contain snippets of 1960s episodes still missing from the BBC archives, among them the existentially dreadful attack from Mr Oak and Mr Quill, humanoids made of gas who advance on a helpless woman breathing poison gas out of gaping black holes in their faces. These small moments of violence are all that’s left of some classics stories.

Global audiences from the 1960s to present

These snippets of missing episodes exist because, prior to the late 1970s, the BBC did not routinely archive its shows – including Doctor Who. Indeed, a global network of television archives has been crucial in maintaining the nearly 50 year history of the show.

Doctor Who episodes missing from the BBC archives have been recovered from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Africa. They were found there because the BBC sent them there, as exports for showing on local free to air channels.

As recently as 2013, a large number of missing episodes were found in a remote television relay station in west Africa.

Much academic research into the viewing and reception of Doctor Who is about British audiences. How fascinating it would be to know more about the first global audiences and the viewing reactions and audiences from Hong Kong to Nigeria.

Modern Doctor Who’s global audience is no less diverse. In 2013 the incumbent Doctor, Peter Capaldi, embarked on a world tour and fans in Seoul, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, New York and Sydney clamoured to meet him.

But these fans, like others elsewhere in the world, watched their favourite show free to air.

Streaming the 60th anniversary and beyond

The BBC’s announcement changes everything for fans around the world.

It puts Doctor Who on par with programs from the streaming giants which are the most talked about in popular culture, like House of the Dragon or The Crown.

But Doctor Who has always been an accessible commodity on the ABC, TVNZ and their like.

In Australia, Doctor Who on the ABC was simply a fact of life. This announcement will not only be a disappointment but a concern about access.

It also means Doctor Who will be judged against lavish programs with immensely larger budgets, different storytelling approaches and multinational casts.

In 2021, the Guardian writer Martin Belam suggested the time had come to exterminate Doctor Who for precisely these reasons, but back then the show was still safe on global free to air.

This change means Doctor Who will enter its 60th year with its global broadcasting changed beyond recognition and judged against the giants of streamed television.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: BBC

Bluey was edited for American viewers – but global audiences deserve to see all of us

Beloved children’s program Bluey has received some backlash.

Not due to the program, but to Disney’s decision to make edits to various episodes for the US market.

Dubbed “censorship” by some publications, the changes to the third season, released in America on Disney+ this month, include Bandit not being hit in a sensitive area, a conversation about getting a vasectomy replaced with “getting dog teeth removed”, the horse Buttermilk no longer stands next to poo on screen and Aunt Trix is no longer seen on the toilet during a video call.

One episode, Family Meeting, where Bluey accuses dad Bandit of farting in her face, was removed entirely – although due to the backlash it appears this decision has been rescinded.

Parents who watch Bluey on Disney… there’s an extra episode via CBBC which Disney doesn’t allow to be on their platforms! Through global streaming services, content previously produced for a local market now has a greater opportunity to reach a global audience.

The New York Times has said Bluey “could rival The Wiggles as Australia’s most popular children’s cultural export”.

But can screen content truly be considered a cultural export if it is re-edited to reflect cultural aspects of the market it is being distributed in?

Content for global audience

Australian media content being changed for the US market is not a new phenomena.

More than 40 years ago, Mad Max was dubbed with American accents for the US market.

More recently, Australian television shows like Wilfred (2011), Kath & Kim (2009) and The Slap (2015) have been reproduced for a US market.

Since these Americanised series premiered, there has been a shift in the commissioning of media. Content distributors no longer solely rely on local broadcasters: they now are able to go direct to a global audience through streaming services.

Since the start of 2022, Netflix has commissioned content from 44 territories, Warner Bros commissioned work across 27 territories for HBO Max and Discovery+, Disney 23 and Amazon 21.

These streaming platforms aren’t looking for local hits: they’re looking for global hits, from anywhere. It’s not just about making the next Stranger Things, it’s about making the next Money Heist – the Netflix hit from Spain – or the next South Korean juggernaut Squid Game.

A question of quotas

In 2021, the federal government removed the quota requiring local children’s programming on Australian commercial television. This has resulted in a significant decline in the broadcast of children’s content.

We have seen increased investment of Australian content by streaming services. Together, Amazon Prime, Disney, Netflix and Stan spent A$178.9 million in the 2020–21 financial year, including children’s television. This is up more than $25 million in the previous year.

Earlier this year, Netflix launched a partnership with the Australian Children’s Television Foundation to fund the development of original Australian children’s series. Disney has also announced its planned investment in local Australian children’s content.

This increase by streaming service is yet to fill the shortfall by commercial television.

But is it Australian?

In June, the Make It Australian campaign was launched at the Sydney Film Festival. The campaign calls for Australian stories to be “told on Australian screens by us, to us, about us”.

At the campaign launch, arts minister Tony Burke said international and commercial success for Australian films is “wonderful, but that is a bonus.”

The “first objective” for Australian films, he said:

is to make sure our stories are told so that we know better ourselves; we know better each other and the world has a better way of knowing us.

It is the last point that Tony Burke makes, about the world “knowing us”, that is less considered in the ongoing local screen content debate. Indeed, Australian content is being shown to a global audience.

But what happens when Australian content is edited with these international audiences in mind? Edits like those Disney made to Bluey not only impact the humour and the narrative, but also impact the cultural representation within the program.

Increased investment by streaming services will provide opportunities for Australian local content to be successful locally and globally. But for Australian television and films to be true cultural exports, the world should be seeing the version of ourselves we are seeing, too.

The success of this relies on not only focusing on content production and local distribution, but including strategies that allow Australian content to remain free from localised edits, so it can truly reflect an Australian cultural export.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

In the new Disney Pixar movie Lightyear, time gets bendy

Spoiler alert: this article explains a key plot point, but we don’t give away anything you won’t see in trailers. Thanks to reader Florence, 7, for her questions.

At the beginning of the new Disney Pixar film, Lightyear, Buzz Lightyear gets stranded on a dangerous faraway planet with his commanding officer and crew.

Their only hope of getting off the planet is to test a special fuel. To do that, Buzz has to fly into space and repeatedly try to jump to hyper-speed. But each attempt he makes comes with a terrible cost.

Every time Buzz takes off for a four-minute test flight into space, he lands back on the planet to find many years have passed. The people Buzz cares most about fall in love, have kids and even grandkids. Time becomes his biggest enemy.

What’s going on? Is this just science fiction, or could what happened to Buzz actually happen?

Time is relative: Einstein’s big idea

Buzz is experiencing a real phenomenon known as time dilation. Time dilation is a prediction of one of the most famous scientific theories ever developed: Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Prior to relativity, the best theory of motion we had was Isaac Newton’s mechanics.

Newton’s theory was incredibly powerful, providing stunning predictions of the motion of the planets in our solar system.

In Newton’s theory, time is like a single giant clock that ticks away the seconds in the same way for everyone. No matter where you are in the universe, the master clock will display the same time.

Einstein’s theory of relativity shattered the master clock into many clocks – one for each person and object in motion. In Einstein’s picture of the universe, everyone carries their own clock with them.

One consequence of this is there is no guarantee the clocks will tick at the same rate. In fact, many clocks will tick at different rates.

Even worse, the faster you travel relative to someone else, the slower your clock will tick compared to theirs.

This means if you travel very fast in a spaceship – as Buzz does – a few minutes might pass for you, but years might pass for someone on the planet you left behind.

Time travelling forwards – but not backwards

In a sense, time dilation can be thought of as a kind of time travel. It provides a way to jump into someone else’s future.

This is what Buzz does: he jumps into the future of his friends left on the planet below.

Unfortunately, there is no way to use time dilation to travel backwards in time, into the past (as one important character talks about later in the film).

It’s also not possible to use time dilation to travel into your own future.

That means there’s no known way for you to travel into the future and meet your older self, simply by going really fast.

Time travellers above Earth right now

Time dilation might seem like science fiction, but in fact it is a measurable phenomenon. Indeed, scientists have conducted a number of experiments to confirm that clocks tick at different rates, depending on how they are moving.

For example, astronauts on the International Space Station are travelling at very high speeds compared with their friends and family on Earth. (You can watch the space station pass overhead if you know when to look up.)

This means those astronauts are ageing at a slightly slower rate. Indeed, US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, from whom Buzz in Lightyear gets his name, would have experienced a tiny bit of time dilation during his trip to the Moon in the 1960s.

Don’t worry, though, the astronauts on the International Space Station won’t feel or notice any time dilation. It’s nothing like the extreme time jumps seen in Lightyear.

Aldrin was able to return safely to his family, and the astronauts up in space now will too.

To infinity – and beyond

Clearly, time dilation could have a serious cost. But it’s not all bad news. Time dilation could one day help us travel to the stars.

The universe is a massive place. The nearest star is 40,208,000,000,000 km away. Getting there is like travelling around the world one billion times. Travelling at an ordinary speed, no one would ever survive long enough to make the trip.

Time dilation, however, is also accompanied by another phenomenon: length contraction. When one travels very fast toward an object, the distance between your spaceship and that object will appear to be contracted.

Very roughly, at high speeds, everything is closer together. This means that for someone travelling at a high speed, they could make it to the nearest star in a matter of days.

But time dilation would still be in effect. Your clock would slow relative to the clock of someone on Earth. So, you could make a round trip to the nearest star in a few days, but by the time you arrived home everyone you know would be gone.

That is both the promise, and the tragedy, of interstellar travel.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: YouTube

Inside the house where you can swing from room to room

Dubbed ‘Disney World for adults’ by the selling agent, the owners of this interesting resort style home have dropped the price by AUD $946,400 (USD$700,000) in hopes someone will finally buy the property after a long 18 months on the market.

Real estate agent Colleen Henninger of City Center Realty recently re-listed the unusual family home on real estate site Zillow, where it gained huge interest thanks to its design.

It’s a fusion between African safari, American wild west, Tarzan's lair and a ride at a Disney resort.

For AUD $1.6 million (USD $1.2 million ), the home could be all yours. The outside of this two-storey home features timber and rock walls, while inside you will find massive exposed timber beams, corrugated iron walls and wrought iron walkways connecting the rooms, which are separated by a massive internal void.

A life-sized carved timber elephant is on display in the downstairs living room, while a statue of a pirate guards the upstairs area.

There is also an elevated stage complete with drum kit and ropes to swing from end to end if you’re feeling like something different.

The three-bedroom, three bathroom home in the Los Angeles suburb of Lakewood, California, first hit the market in October 2020, with an asking price of USD $1.9 million (AUD $2.57 million). However, after failing to sell and a brief stint as a rental on Airbnb where it was leasing for USD $730 per night, the owners have decided to drop the asking price.

Henninger, who is a friend of the owners, says there had been a great deal of interest in the home, but the majority of those who inspected the property just wanted to look and had no intention of buying.

"It's a great house. It's like Disney World," she said. "It was built with fun in mind.

It's a unique home and it's going to need a unique buyer. You go in and you either love it or hate it. It needs someone who wants to entertain guests and have fun."

Of course if you do get bored, the home is within driving distance to Disneyland Resort, Anaheim which is a short 20 kilometres away.

Images: Domain

Natalie Portman's buff transformation stuns fans

Newly-released photos of Natalie Portman in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder film have left fans stunned at the superstar’s body transformation.

The 40-year-old mum is shown sporting ripped arms that could give co-star Chris Hemsworth a run for his money in the latest publicity stills released for Marvel’s next big screen outing.

Co-star Tessa Thompson is shown alongside the actress, looking equally buff, but it’s Portman’s transformation that’s caught every bodies attention.

She looks a world away from the actress best known for her roles in Jackie Kennedy or the doomed ballerina Nina in Black Swan.

Not everyone’s a fan, though: in an op-ed writer Fran Hoepfner lamented the fact that Portman was one of many acclaimed actors swept up in the Marvel universe.

“It’s impossible to believe that what people want from Portman … is for her to get jacked,” she wrote.

“Enough time has passed under the tedious reign of Disney’s superhero movies that we know legitimately great and versatile actors are wasted, smoothed out and plumped up, for less than ten minutes of screen time.”

Portman is one of many big screen stars to unveil their Marvel-facilitated superhero body transformations in recent years, among them Kumail Nanjiani and Chris Pratt.

Portman has previously opened up about the extreme measures needed to get superhero-buff for Thor, telling Jimmy Fallon it had been quite a shock after the inactivity of lockdowns.

Images: Twitter & Getty

Police under fire for blasting Disney songs during arrest

Police officers in a Californian town are being investigated after they were filmed blasting Disney songs late at night.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, police are seen searching an allegedly stolen car in the town of Santa Ana around 11pm.

After a few minutes, the officers notice the situation is being filmed, and one goes to a police car and turns on the speakers to loudly play You've Got A Friend In Me from the Disney film Toy Story in an effort to deter the filmer.

Other songs from Disney films Mulan, Encanto and Coco play next, as nearby residents are awoken from the sound and ask police to turn the music down.

They eventually do, but not before attracting the attention of one resident who is also a town councillor, identified as Jonathan Hernandez.

Hernandez asked the police what the reason for the music was, with one officer responding, “copyright infringement” while pointing to the person filming the scene.

This means if the video was posted online, it would be removed for playing the copyrighted Disney tracks.

Police in the US have previously been accused of playing copyrighted songs when being filmed by civilians.

Despite their attempts to thwart the video, it remains on YouTube and has amassed over 46,000 views.

"I'm embarrassed that this is how you're treating my neighbours," Mr Hernandez said in the video.

"There's children here."

Santa Ana Chief of Police David Valentin said in a statement that the police department was aware of the video, and that the incident was being investigated.

In it, Ariel struggles to bake a cake for Prince Eric, and @dcaspers is quick to change it.

“Ariel changes her body, leaves her friends and family … and now she’s baking, all for him,” he writes over the clip.

The dad then shows the changes he made to the book, swapping Ariel’s piping bag full of icing for a slice of pizza.

“Instead of baking, Ariel orders a pizza,” he writes.

“While the prince eats his pizza… with a fork,” he continues, “She finds her new love… in TikTok.”

Image: @dcaspers / TikTok

In another clip, the dad focuses on Rapunzel from Tangled and writes, “Teaching my daughters not to settle for the stereotypes”.

In the original reader, Rapunzel enters a pie-baking contest and wins a blue ribbon, “which her bf (boyfriend) approves” of. I can’t stand stereotypes, and for Disney to use them when most little kids look up to/love them is awful. How can you see the bad in this?” another said, challenging his Rapunzel edits.

“Bruh, just don’t buy the book if it offends you,” a third user suggested.

In response to the critics, one person wrote, “Why is everyone upset about a dad wanting to teach his daughters to be strong and independent?”

Despite the controversy, this dad has shown how he wants to challenge the messages and stories his daughters see and gone the extra mile to do it.

Image: @dcaspers / TikTok

Watch award-winning Nomadland on Disney+

Nomadland won three Academy Awards this year - for Best Picture, Best Director (Chloé Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).

The director - Chloé Zhao - has made a film with heart and passion and by choosing Frances McDormand to play the lead role, she made sure all this passion was conveyed so well.

The movie revolves around Fern (played by McDormand), who, following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. McDormand produced the film as well, along with Peter Spears (Call Me by Your Name), Dan Janvey (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Mollye Asher (The Rider), and Zhao (The Rider).

Aademy Award nominee David Strathairn stars as well (Good Night, and Good Luck), along with actors Swankie, Bob Wells and Linda May, all of whom appeared in Jessica Bruder’s acclaimed book, which Zhao adapted for the screen.

Zhao directed and edited the film, with Joshua James Richards (God’s Own Country) serving as the Director of Photography and Production Designer. The movie’s sound team was M. Wolf Snyder (The Rider), Sergio Diaz (Roma) and Zach Seivers (Assassins).

More on the awards

It was special to see Zhao make history by winning the award for Best Director because in the Academy’s 83-year history, she is only the second woman and the first woman of colour to ever receive this award.

Frances McDormand won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the movie and this is her third time winning such an award. McDormand is a well-established actress known for her meaty roles – for example, Fargo, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing and Missouri.

Where you can watch Nomadland

You can watch Nomadland on the streaming platform, Disney+, and on Star - the new entertainment brand, launched as part of the Disney+ platform earlier this year.

Nomadland is streaming now on Disney+ on Star…

Photos: Disney+

Disney’s deadly fight against bizarre attraction

Five years on since the death of two-year-old boy Lane Thomas Graves, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa are still fighting to keep his killer at bay.

Lane died after playing with other children at the resort’s man-made Seven Seas Lagoon on the night of June 15, 2016.

The boy was tragically grabbed by an alligator who dragged him into the water, while he attempted to fill his bucket to make sandcastles.

Lane’s father Matt Graves fought the alligator by attempting to pry its jaws open, but was left with major injuries.

Police divers sadly discovered Lane’s body submerged in the murky lagoon just a day later.

Disney is taking major strides to try and keep its Florida properties safe from alligators, but the exploding population of the deadly critters are making it as difficult as ever.

Reports say 250 alligators have been at Disney World since June 2016c however the massive reptile population is proving a hard challenge to control.

As an attempt to encourage Florida’s famous gator trappers, each one has been offered $US30 ($A40) for each alligator they trap.

Trappers are also allowed to keep any profits from the leather or meat sold.

However, activists are fighting against Disney who say the alligators are rarely, if not ever, rehomed.

Tammy Sapp, a spokeswoman for the wildlife commission, said the majority of the 250 alligators caught had been euthanised.

Some of the reptiles are sent to farms, exhibits or zoos while those under 1.2m are relocated to other parts of the state.

“The FWC takes public safety seriously and uses Targeted Harvest Area (THA) permits as part of a comprehensive effort to achieve alligator management goals,” Ms Sapp told the Orlando Sentinel.

“THA permits allow a managing authority to work directly with a designated FWC contracted nuisance alligator trapper, making the process for removing nuisance alligators more proactive and streamlined.”

After Disney closed one of its major studios, animation is under pressure in pandemic Hollywood

Last year’s computer-animated feature Trolls World Tour served as an early test case for movie releases during the pandemic. The film appeared on video-on-demand streaming services the same day as its limited theatrical run in April 2020. And the industry was keen to know whether audiences would be eager to stump up rental fees to watch new releases online when they couldn’t get out to the cinema.

As it turned out, the movie quickly made over US$200 million (£142 million) in rentals. Its distributors Universal began doing deals with cinema chains for more films to be released online just weeks after their theatrical launches.

The success of Trolls World Tour coincided with a supposed revolution in “remote” animation production, brought on by the pandemic. As on-location casts and crews continue to adjust to navigating new safety precautions and guidelines, feature-length cartoons by comparison appear well suited to remote working. Initially, there was even talk of an upsurge in the production of animated media that appeared somewhat pandemic-proof.

Fast forward 12 months, however, and the situation looks a little more tricky. Economic pressures mean that the animated movie industry might just be starting to shrink even if they’re more viable to produce in a pandemic landscape. A case in point is the Walt Disney Company’s recent announcement of plans to shut its computer animation division Blue Sky Studios. Its sudden demise after 34 years will undoubtedly rob popular cinema of one of its most creative and imaginative studios.

Blue Sky has made significant contributions to the shape and direction of US animation. Amid the late-1990s tussle for power between Pixar Animation Studios and its rival DreamWorks, Blue Sky came onto the scene somewhat under the radar compared with its larger competitors.

Formed in February 1987 by animator Chris Wedge, the studio started out in software design and animated adverts before later shifting focus towards visual effects and character animation, providing CGI for a number of blockbusters like Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Fight Club (1999).

Meanwhile, Wedge’s computer-animated short film Bunny (1998) won the Academy Award for best animated short film. This was quickly followed by Blue Sky’s debut digital feature Ice Age (2002), which led to a highly successful franchise spanning two decades. In the years that followed, Blue Sky produced 13 feature films and a host of short cartoons, spin-offs and television specials, balancing original franchises with imaginative re-tellings of a number of popular media products.

The future of animation
While many animation studios have come and gone, the unforeseen closure of a such a leading player as Blue Sky will lead to hundreds of layoffs and the cancellation of its animated films already in production. Warnings about Blue Sky’s future were immediately sounded once it was acquired by the Walt Disney Company as part of its broader acquisition of previous owners 20th Century Fox in 2019. This meant Disney now owned two of the three major players in US animated production, following its earlier US$7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar back in 2006.

Disney’s growing monopoly of the entertainment industry over the last two decades has certainly caused widespread alarm. Don’t forget, the Mouse House also bought Marvel for US$4 billion in August 2009. In the face of the success of animation during the pandemic, the demise of Blue Sky might appear part of a broader Disney corporate strategy to gain market advantage by purchasing and then closing competitors.

The loss of a major animation studio in such circumstances could hardly be seen as good news for the sector. But Blue Sky’s sudden closure could also be interpreted as a signal that Hollywood animation more generally is under real pressure for the first time since Toy Story started a new era. Indeed Disney itself cited the “current economic realities” as the reason for Blue Sky’s termination.

Blockbuster releases from Disney and Pixar are still to come this summer, of course, but these animated films started life years ago. We’ve yet to see how the pipeline of newly green-lit films will be affected.

Meanwhile Universal’s Paris-based Illumination Mac Guff studio (creators of the Despicable Me franchise) temporarily closed down last year over coronavirus, leading to knock-on effects for its animated feature films. Release dates at all the major Hollywood cartoon studios have also seen shifts. In some cases theatrical releases have been skipped entirely (as was the case with Pixar’s Soul) because of slow production, tight delivery schedules and the pressures of domestic animation.

Questions also remain over how sustainable remote working is for the industry, especially as Hollywood studios often outsource work to off-site facilities around the world, and consistently strong and stable global internet connections can’t be guaranteed.

Whichever way you look at it, Blue Sky’s high-profile demise is momentous. Even if Disney decides to maintain some of the studio’s output – more Ice Age films for example – the unexpected end of Blue Sky ultimately points to the instability post-pandemic Hollywood is facing. It would be safe to assume that there are going to be several further cracks in the ice before too long.

Written by Christopher Holliday. This article first appeared on The Conversation.
