"We'll miss him terribly": Alex Cullen steps down from Today

Alex Cullen is "stepping down permanently" from Today after accepting a huge cash prize from billionaire Adrian Portelli.

After Cullen referred to Portelli as "McLaren Man" on the Channel Nine morning show and pocketed $50,000 for using Portelli's preferred moniker, Cullen disappeared from screens for several days for breaching the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Journalist Code of Ethics.

Despite handing the money back, which has since been donated to charity, Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo confirmed on Friday morning that Cullen would not be retuning to the show.

“As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,” Stefanovic said.

“There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed that he would finish with the network."

“Alex has, of course, been part of the Today family for five years now, he’s always ready with a smile and a laugh and without hesitation speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly, that’s for sure."

“Alex is a terrific fella, what you see is what you get and he has been a great mate to all of us over these years and we wish Alex, his wife Bonnie and his beautiful kids all the very best for the future.”

The scandal began when Portelli put a call out on social media, challenging journalists to refer to him publicly as "McLaren Man" instead of his common nickname "Lambo Guy", which he earned after showing up to The Block auctions in a bright yellow Lamborghini.

Portelli said whoever completed the challenge would earn a hefty cash prize, and after Cullen used the new nickname live on Today just hours later, Portelli shared a screenshot of a bank transfer to Cullen for a whopping $50,000.

Harold Holt is a meme today, but when the prime minister went missing in December 1967, it was no laughing matter

Joshua Black, Australian National University

At some point, Australians stopped grieving Harold Holt’s death and many started to laugh about it instead. The sudden disappearance of a prime minister at a Victorian beach in December 1967 has furnished many wisecracks and memes. Former Cronulla Sharks coach Jack Gibson famously said that waiting for the team to win was like “leaving a porch light on for Harold Holt”.

The Harold Holt Memorial Swimming Pool in Malvern, commemorated in his honour in 1969, attracts its fair share of mirth. So do the conspiracy theories, deeply unserious as they are, of “double agent” Holt’s abduction by a Chinese submarine. A few years ago, Holt’s grandson pointed out that Cheviot beach was “too shallow for such a vessel”, and the late prime minister “wasn’t a fan of Chinese cuisine” anyway.

For all its comic potential today, Harold Holt’s disappearance was no joke at the time.

Rough waters

Holt had not enjoyed 1967. The war in Vietnam – effectively his war – was increasingly divisive. Old questions about the HMAS Voyager disaster in 1964 had caused political mayhem for him in parliament. Another scandal, this one about the misuse of VIP flights, had damaged his standing and that of his government.

In the final weeks of Holt’s life, he had faced off against his deputy prime minister, Country Party leader John McEwen, over Australia’s decision not to devalue the dollar in line with Britain’s devaluation of sterling. The exchange rate affected primary and secondary producers and was politically controversial enough to almost split the Liberal-Country Party Coalition.

There were personal challenges, too. Holt’s brother Cliff died in March, and by December the prime minister was suffering with shoulder and back pains. On Saturday December 16, the front page of The Australian reported that Holt’s doctor had advised him to “swim less”.

The prime minister was a man who thrived on physical risk and loved the water, so he ignored the advice. On Sunday morning he and a few companions, including lover Marjorie Gillespie and friend Alan Stewart, went to Portsea to catch a glimpse of the world-famous sailor Alec Rose’s yacht.

They then went to Cheviot beach, where an overheating and reckless Holt insisted on swimming. As the press reported the next morning, there were “strong currents and a heavy surf”. Holt looked to be caught in a rip. He dived and never resurfaced.

Everywhere and nowhere

Stewart and Gillespie quickly raised the alarm. What followed, according to Holt’s biographer Tom Frame, was “one of the largest search operations in Australian history”. The Victorian Police, the Royal Australian Air Force and Navy Search and Rescue were all involved, providing several teams of professional divers, though the surf was too dangerous for them to work in that night. Airlines TAA and Ansett both contributed an aircraft each to the search mission.

News of the “missing VIP” quickly spread, and media outlets began breaking the story in the later afternoon. The prime minister’s wife Zara and press secretary Tony Eggleton were quickly flown from Canberra to Melbourne.

After several hours of dangerous operations, the search was suspended for the night, to be resumed at 4.54am the following morning. At dawn, there were 50 divers on hand and 340 people involved throughout the day.

Large headlines such as “PRIME MINISTER MISSING” and “MR HOLT BELIEVED DEAD” dominated the newspapers on Monday morning. Topographical pictures and maps with arrows and labels (“Mr Holt Disappeared Here”) were printed in most of the metropolitan broadsheets.

There was a constant stream of radio and television interviews with rescue personnel, and no fewer than nine press conferences at Portsea in the hours and days after the disappearance. Even Marjorie was prevailed upon to speak on camera. The journalists wanted to know whether Holt had been doing an “overarm stroke” or “the breaststroke” before he vanished.

Given the circumstances, the media were mostly well behaved. Reporters kept a respectful distance from Zara as she landed in Melbourne, and they “were fantastic” in their treatment of Eggleton, who had to repeatedly put on a brave face for the cameras despite his obvious grief.

The hunt for Holt’s body ran through to early January 1968. Nearby sharks were captured and dissected in case they had secrets to reveal. Several weeks later, another biographer notes, fisherman picked up “a thigh bone” and additional “leg bone”, but these were never identified. The live reporting on the search was grim and macabre, the lack of a body morbidly fascinating. Holt’s body was everywhere and nowhere all at once.

Saying goodbye

A blanket of respect fell where only recently there had been passionate criticism. The obituaries described the lost PM as “essentially a ‘nice bloke’”. The Courier-Mail said Holt was “the most courteous, personable, likeable and accessible Prime Minister this country has ever had”. There were tender tributes from former colleagues like Sir Robert Menzies and opponents including the new Labor leader Gough Whitlam. International tributes came thick and fast.

Holt’s memorial service, just days before Christmas, led to “the largest influx of overseas heads of state in Australian history”. There were several influential Asian leaders present. A tearful US President Lyndon Johnson flew in to mourn the loss of his “cherished friend” and commiserate with Zara before breaking off for urgent discussions about Vietnam.

Dignitaries, journalists and a handful of ticketed members of the public attended St Paul’s cathedral in Melbourne and a further 20,000 mourners lined the streets outside. Four television cameras were on hand to capture the occasion, which was broadcast live across Australia’s TV and radio networks.

For most, it was a solemn occasion. Brisbane’s Archbishop Philip Strong eulogised that Holt’s loss would be “impossible to calculate”. But according to Don Chipp, a low-ranking Liberal minister, the minds of federal politicians were elsewhere.

‘I want to be prime minister’

Australia’s Constitution offers no advice about what to do when the prime minister goes swimming and doesn’t come back. In fact, it says nothing about the job of prime minister whatsoever. Holt’s death, therefore, was followed by an unseemly power struggle.

The first problem was one for Governor-General Lord Casey: when should an acting prime minister be appointed? After two leaderless days, Casey called on McEwen as deputy prime minister to lead an interim government. McEwen accepted, promising to resign as soon as the Liberal Party chose its new leader.

The Liberal deputy leader and treasurer, Billy McMahon, was unimpressed with this. He and McEwen had been at constant loggerheads in recent times and they deeply detested one another. It only got worse from there. In a tense meeting, McEwen vetoed McMahon’s candidacy entirely. He explained to the press afterwards:

I have told Mr McMahon that neither I nor my Country Party colleagues would be prepared to serve under him as Prime Minister.

It was no empty threat, and the Liberal Party quickly moved on (though McMahon didn’t). Some Liberal operatives thought it best to keep McEwen in charge, whereas others began mobilising to elevate someone from a group of ministers who, The Bulletin thought, had been “reinforcing each other in their triviality” of late.

In the end, there were four candidates. Labour and National Service minister Leslie Bury was an early favourite. Immigration minister Billy Snedden threw his hat in the ring and was eliminated early, though he would be a future contender. Allen Fairhall, the much-liked defence minister, was thought a chance but chose not to stand. The Bulletin said his health wasn’t up to it, and he wasn’t even sure he wanted to be a politician anyway.

The two strongest contenders were the external affairs minister, the respected Paul Hasluck, and the government’s senate leader, the gregarious John Gorton. The latter had run a highly visible campaign, and the eminent journalist Alan Reid later wrote that he was different from the late Holt: Gorton “had the air of being prepared to be rough, tough and nasty if he had to be”.

On January 9, decision day for the Liberals, The Sydney Morning Herald claimed Gorton’s backers had “lost a little of their strong confidence”. He needn’t have worried. After a motion of condolence from Holt, a dignified speech from McMahon and two ballots, Gorton became prime minister.

Gorton quickly assumed the prime ministership and won a by-election to represent Holt’s electorate in the House of Representatives.

In a matter of weeks, our politics had been completely transformed. Some said it was a characteristically Australian thing to lose our prime minister in the surf. For us today, it is national folklore. At the time, it seemed an embarrassingly trivial way to let our leader go.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Hugh Jackman pleads for help in search for missing Broadway star

Hugh Jackman is using his influence and wide reach to assist in the search for his former Broadway co-star, Zelig Williams, who has been missing since early October.

Williams, a 28-year-old performer known for his roles in MJ The Musical and Hamilton, was last seen on October 3 at his home in Columbia, South Carolina. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts and brown slides.

The non-profit organisation Black and Missing has released a missing person poster, stating that authorities believe Williams was last spotted driving in the Congaree National Park area, where his vehicle was later found abandoned.

Jackman, who performed with Williams during the 2019 concert tour The Man. The Music. The Show, has taken to social media to amplify the call for information. On his 56th birthday, the Australian actor shared a photo of Williams and his mother with a link to a news report from Good Morning America, urging his 34.5 million Instagram followers to report any information to local authorities.

"If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of ZELIG WILLIAMS please reach out to your local authorities," Jackman wrote in his post. He has continued to spread the message, using Instagram stories to ask followers to contact the Richland County Sheriff's Office with any potential leads.

"Zelig, we love you and are praying for your safe return. Please pass this message on!!!" Jackman added.

Williams' disappearance has left his family in anguish. His aunt, Christine McLaughlin Barber, initially believed he might have been involved in a car accident after receiving an SOS signal from his phone around 9:50am on October 3, shortly after he left home. However, authorities have since ruled out this possibility.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott revealed to local news outlet WISTV that an extensive search operation has been underway, utilising helicopters, boats and drones to cover vast areas. "We've searched on foot, in the air, at various locations," Lott said. "We are also using other investigative techniques involving cell phones and other means, which I cannot disclose at this time."

Lott also said that Williams is in need of prescription medication, adding urgency to the search.

Williams' cousin, Mieoki Corbin-Jacobs, expressed the family's heartbreak, telling WISTV: "It's devastation. It's devastation for someone who is so close to his family to just disappear like that... there's no way to describe it."

The Broadway community, along with Jackman, continues to rally in hopes of locating Williams and bringing him home safely.

Images: Instagram

Chilling vision of missing family emerges

A video filmed in New Zealand's west coast is the first "credible" sighting of a father and his kids who went missing three years ago.

Tom Phillips along with his daughter Jayda, now 11, son Maverick, 9 and daughter Ember, 8, disappeared from the New Zealand town of Marokopa in December 2021.

There have been hundreds of sightings of Phillips reported to police since then, with many of them unverified, and the children nowhere in sight.

But now, new footage shot on the evening of October 3, showed all four of them marching through a grass field in Marokopa, in a single file with camouflage gear and heavy backpacks.

The video, filmed by pig hunters, was handed to police and has since prompted a large-scale search of farmland in the area this week, which unfortunately failed to locate Phillips and his children.

In the footage, the family seemed unaware they were being filmed from afar, with one of the witnesses describing them as "equipped for the bush".

The children's mother, Catherine, has seen the video and instantly recognised her kids.

“I’m so happy that they’re all there," she told the New Zealand Herald.

"I’m so relieved to see all three of my babies. They’re all alive."

The pig hunters who filmed the footage recalled their short encounter with the children.

“The children asked: ‘Who else knows we’re here?’ And then they just kept on walking. They were all packed up, they had big packs on. I think the father sort of kept them moving,” Farmer John McOviney told the New Zealand Herald.

In another interview with radio station Newstalk ZB, McOviney said that Phillips was carrying a large rifle.

NZ Police Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders has also confirmed the sighting was being treated as "credible".

"While nothing further of significance was located, investigators will now assess information gathered to determine any next steps," he said.

"This is the first time all three of the children have been sighted, which is positive information, and we know it will be reassuring for the children's wider family."

While police remain tight-lipped about what their next steps are, they said : "Our focus is very much on the safe return of Jayda, Maverick and Ember to their whānau [the Maori word for family] and we are doing all that we can to make that happen.”

Phillips and his three children first went missing on September 11, 2021, and an arrest warrant was issued for Phillips shortly after their disappearance.

He does not have legal custody over his children is alleged to have breached a custody order by taking them. The children are believed to have had no education or contact with others since their disappearance.

Members of the public have been warned not to approach Phillips if they spotted him, as he may be armed.

Images: TVNZ/ Waikato Police

Abducted boy found after 73 years

In a remarkable and heartwarming conclusion to a decades-long mystery, Luis Armando Albino, who was abducted 73 years ago, has been found alive and well, bringing joy and closure to a family that never gave up hope.

Albino, who was born in Puerto Rico, was just six years old when he was abducted from Jefferson Square Park in West Oakland, California, in February 1951. On that fateful day, he had been playing with his brother Roger when he was lured away. His disappearance left his family devastated, and the case went cold for decades. His mother, who passed away in 2005, carried a newspaper clipping about her son’s kidnapping in her wallet until her death, refusing to give up on her belief that he was alive.

This long-lost boy, now 79, was found after his niece, Alida Alequin, 63, took a DNA test in 2020. The results matched her with a man who turned out to be Albino, now living on the east coast of the US.

Alequin, determined to find her uncle, sought the help of the FBI and the Department of Justice to track him down. A DNA sample confirmed his identity, finally solving the mystery that had haunted their family for over seven decades.

Albino, a retired firefighter and Marine Corps veteran, had been raised by a couple who took him in as their son after his abduction. His niece said he had faint memories of being taken but had never been able to piece together the truth. Despite the astonishing discovery, Albino has chosen to keep a low profile and has declined to speak with the media.

When Alequin shared the news of the discovery, the emotion was palpable. "She always had hope that he would come home," Alequin said of her grandmother. “She always felt he was alive. She took that with her to her grave.” The family had never stopped thinking about him. Pictures of Luis Armando hung in their home, and stories of his disappearance were passed down through the years, keeping his memory alive.

Albino's reunion with his family was bittersweet. He reconnected with his brother Roger, but sadly, Roger passed away shortly afterward. Despite this, the family remains overjoyed to have found their beloved Luis after so many years of uncertainty. The missing persons report on Albino has since been removed from the California Department of Justice website, a poignant symbol of the long-awaited resolution to this case.

For Alequin and the rest of the family, finding their lost relative after 73 years was nothing short of miraculous. "The outcome of this story is what we strive for," a police spokesperson said of the rare but incredible closure that comes from never giving up on hope.

Images: Alida Alequin

"Never been seen before": Fergie reveals new details from 9/11 near miss

Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, has taken to Instagram overnight to share new details of her 9/11 near miss.

24 years on, the Duchess of York, who has previously revealed that she was meant to be in the World Trade Centre's North Tower when the plane struck the building, has shared more details of the day.

Fergie recalled how her friend, billionaire businessman Howard Lutnick, gave her an office on the 101st floor of the World Trade Centre at the time, for her charity Chances for Children.

The charity's logo had a mascot called Little Red, which was eventually made into a doll for a child named PJ who survived the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombings.

On the day of the 9/11 attacks Fergie was due to attend a meeting in the office, but was running late because of an earlier engagement, so she was still on route to the building when the terrorists struck.

"I was driving in the car and I was late for work... and Little Red was found in the rubble," she said in the video.

Fergie opened a box to reveal her own Little Red doll that survived the attacks. While she has previously talked about the doll, this is the first time she revealed what it looked like.

"A fireman picked her up, carried her out, like the fireman that picked up PJ all those years ago in the Oklahoma City Bombing," she continued.

"And CNN filmed it and said, 'Look, a child's doll.' And Larry King said, 'That's no child's doll. That's Fergie's Little Red' and she stands for children's rights all over the world and she's a sign of hope for children.

"What no one has ever seen before and I would like to share this with you is the actual doll that survived in 9/11.

"So here, I have it at home. Normally I talk about Little Red and here is the actual doll that survived.

"You can see the dust from the building — that's never been seen before.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) (@sarahferguson15)

"And I hope Little Red will be talked about all over the world because she's just a very strong, stoic little person."

She also shared that on the day, Little Red "sat on her desk overlooking Manhattan on that fateful day when the towers came down."

"She came down through the rubble and landed fully intact," she wrote.

"Little Red was carried out of the rubble in the fireman's hat exactly as PJ, a child burn victim, was carried years earlier in the Oklahoma City bombing, where the doll was first inspired to bring hope during difficult times and raise money for aid.

"Little Red now sits in the 9/11 memorial museum and serves as a reminder of hope within the darkness. We will #neverforget," she continued before encouraging her followers to donate to the Cantor Relief Fund, to support families affected by disaster.

Images: Instagram
