In pictures: breathtaking photos of the Aurora Australis
The ethereal lights of the Aurora Australis can usually only be seen by Tasmanians, but in recent days, those in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia were lucky enough to view the spectacular natural light show.
The phenomenon is caused when plasma particles from the sun enter the atmosphere. The collision between the electrically charged particles and Earth's magnetic field ionise oxygen and nitrogen atoms, releasing colourful light.
