One week after Christa Pike’s failed execution, the 50-year-old is awake and speaking, according to her lawyers.

The convicted murderer was scheduled for lethal injection last Wednesday, but after being given two doses of pentobarbital, she was still breathing which led to authorities eventually abandoning the execution.

This morning, her lawyers announced that she is conscious, speaking and receiving medical care, a development they described as “unprecedented”.

Her lawyers confirmed in a statement that she remains handcuffed and shackled despite significant injuries to her arms, and described her prognosis as unclear.

“At a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” lawyers Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason said.

“We are incredibly grateful to the first responders and the medical team at the hospital who treated Christa like a human and have provided exceptional care to her.

“We also want to thank thousands from all over the world who sent messages offering prayers and support for Christa.”

The statement also said the lawyers will be appearing in a news conference later today.

Following the failed execution the Tennessee Department of Correction said officials had followed every step of the state’s approved execution protocol.

“The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening,” the department said.

A comprehensive independent review into the failed execution is in progress, with the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026 stopped.

Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 1996, for the murder of fellow student and 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

She was 18 when she and others lured Slemmer to an isolated area, where the teenager was tortured and murdered.

Pike has expressed remorse for the killing since then, while her lawyers argued her age, mental health and traumatic childhood should have been given greater consideration.
