A body has been found in the search for Queensland restaurateur John Kilroy.

The 73-year-old man was staying with friends in Brisbane, as he underwent cancer treatment.

He was reported missing after he failed to return from a walk along Brisbane River on Sunday, according to The Courier Mail.

“We are worried about him,” a friend told the newspaper.

“He was in great pain and went for a walk and we haven’t seen him since. Police have been notified.”

Police confirmed they found a body at a carpark on Howard St in Brisbane City, close to the river, on Monday morning, with a formal identification in process.

“His death is being treated as non-suspicious,” a spokesman said.

Kilroy, operated pubs, restaurants and function venues for more than four decades, including iconic Brisbane steakhouse Cha Cha Char

In 2020 he sold the steakhouse, which hosted politicians, miners and executives, and relocated to Hervey Bay for his retirement.

Tributes have poured in from those who have worked with him or visited his restaurants.

“I worked at both Jellyfish and Char in Darwin. I stayed at John’s wild apartment in Darwin when I first went up there. He was a true icon, and a real adventurer. I have only good memories of him,” one person wrote.

Another said the restaurateur was “a true Titan of the hospitality industry, a wonderful host and generous to a fault”.

A third said that “the world has lost one of its best”.
