Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac has opened up about becoming a father for the third time, revealing why he and fiancée Rebecca James chose to wait until the birth of their babies to discover whether they were having a boy or girl.

The couple welcomed their third child, a son named Miles Samuel McMillan, last month, joining daughters Margot, three, and Mabel, two.

Writing about the experience, Sam said he would not have wanted to know the baby’s gender before the birth, despite understanding why many parents choose to find out.

“Throughout all three pregnancies, I’ve been the self-appointed ‘GPO’ (Gender Police Officer),” he wrote.

“Meaning, I would briefly (and annoyingly, according to Bec) remind staff before every single scan, appointment and phone call, that we were NOT finding out the gender.”

Sam said the couple wanted the first reveal to happen in the delivery room, rather than through the increasingly popular gender-reveal celebrations.

“No pink or blue balloons, no coloured smoke streaming out of a Kawasaki, and absolutely no confetti cannons (they give me anxiety),” he wrote.

“The only gender reveal we wanted would be in the delivery room surrounded by medical professionals.”

For Sam, the decision was partly about escaping the constant stream of information that has become part of everyday life.

“Life in 2026 is information overload. Technology bombards us from all directions on all devices all day and all night if we let it. Alerts, notifications, reminders.

“So. Much. Noise.”

He said waiting nine months to discover such an important detail had made the pregnancy feel particularly special.

“There’s something really peaceful about leaving it to the universe and finding out when the moment arrives,” he wrote.

“If any expecting parents are considering it, I would highly recommend it.”

The couple had been convinced they were expecting another daughter, with Sam saying Rebecca felt the pregnancy was similar to her first two.

“I was already outnumbered and it just seemed like my destiny was to be the token man in an all-girl house. And I was cool with that.”

He even arrived at the birthing suite wearing a “Girl Dad” hat.

That expectation quickly changed when their son was born.

“And then, the most beautiful plot twist. Our baby boy, Miles Samuel McMillan arrived.”

Sam said choosing their son’s name had taken some time, with the couple initially having a list of possible girls’ names.

“When Bec suggested Miles Samuel, it just felt right.”

The new father also described the moment he and Rebecca settled in with their newborn son.

“Overwhelmed and overjoyed, we put on some Miles Davis, whispered his name a few times and watched him sleep,” he wrote.

The couple first introduced Miles to Sunrise viewers in July, with Sam sharing the happy news that he and Rebecca had welcomed their first son.

“I’ll never forget the look on her face when I said those three words, ‘It’s a boy!’”

“I think she may have even replied, ‘Are you sure?’”

Sam finished his message with a simple welcome to his newest family member.

“Welcome to the world, little man!”
