A South Australian mum has been reunited with the nurse who helped deliver her baby boy in a hospital car park, four months after the birth that neither of them will ever forget.
Tess Salter and her partner thought they had timed the trip to Flinders Medical Centre perfectly when she went into labour, but little did they know their son, Ronnie, was coming sooner than expected.
“Pretty much got to the end of the expressway and then all the lovely pre-birth things that happen to your body were happening and I was like, ‘OK, just hold on’,” she said.
While the couple made it to the hospital, Tess went into labour in the car park, at the same time nurse Alice Metcalfe arrived for work.
“I just knew the sound straight away, so I just ran there,” Alice told 7NEWS.
“I was like, you know, on your next contraction, if you get the urge to push, just push.
“And I caught him.”
Ronnie had arrived within minutes, with Tess recalling the feeling of holding her baby boy for the first time.
“I definitely remember you handing me Ronnie and just looking in your eyes like, ‘What’s your name?’,” Tess recalled.
“Then you just went off to work.”
Tess recalled how helpful Alice was, saying: “She’s my car park angel. Your calming words helping me in those split seconds.
“Truly, you’re always going to be a part of his life.”
Alice also had the honour of announcing the baby’s gender, and said that the experience has changed the trajectory of her career.
“After being a part of this, I was like, ‘Oh, I think I want to be a midwife’,” she said.
