A wedding proposal is meant to be one of the most personal moments a couple can share – but if you’re planning to pop the question in Paris, you might want to book early.
The City of Love has apparently turned into the City of Bulk Engagements.
A viral TikTok clip has revealed a surreal scene along the Seine, where several proposal ‘spots’ sit just metres apart – complete with giant heart-shaped floral arches, glowing “Marry Me” signs, and red carpets surrounded by candles. T
Think less romantic spontaneity, more Valentine’s Day aisle at Kmart.
The video, filmed at night, shows no less than five different proposals happening at once, each lit up by spotlights like a reality TV finale.
Meanwhile, tourists lean over balconies to snap pics of other people’s big moments, and Parisians stroll past on their way to dinner – unfazed by the mass engagement spectacular.
For Australian context, imagine Circular Quay packed with synchronised proposals – every second couple down on one knee while you’re just trying to photograph the Harbour Bridge.
The original poster summed it up neatly, calling the scene their “biggest fear.”
And apparently, most people agree.
According to YouGov UK, just five per cent of people are open to a public proposal, while a staggering 67 per cent would rather keep things private. Another nine per cent had no idea what they wanted, and 18 per cent said they wouldn’t want a marriage proposal at all – fair.
Social media users didn’t hold back in the comments.
“The only public proposal I‘ll accept is at a lantern festival,” one user said.
Another declared, “Biggest fear ever.”
“This feels so SHEIN,” one wrote, while another commented, “I only want the proposal to be at the exact place where I met him.”
“Imagine seeing like the one next you has way better decoration,” one person joked.
“They commercialised proposals,” another said.
One user shared, “I was proposed to in Paris except at a really beautiful Japanese garden. So much more personal and intimate.”
Others were more defiant in their love of the spectacle.
“As a Paris obsessed girly I have zero regrets and nobody can change my mind.”
And then there were the romantically allergic, “May this love never find me,” one wrote.
“It feels so unnatural,” another sighed.
“Are those sets up always there and people can just come by and pay to use it to propose,” someone asked – presumably while adding it to their do-not-do list.
And perhaps the most cutting review of all, “It’s the McDonald’s of proposals lol.”
As one final user diplomatically concluded, “I wouldn’t mind a public proposal just NOT THIS KIND.”
