Police have condemned the actions of a group of teenage e-bike riders for “dangerously” disrupting traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Tuesday.

Around 40 teens were filmed “dangerously” travelling north before making U-turns in front of oncoming traffic, forcing heavy vehicles to brake suddenly.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Driver criticised the act as “incredibly irresponsible, stupid and downright dangerous”.

“I’m struggling to find the adjective that outlines how stupid and irresponsible this behaviour is,” Driver said.

“We don’t want to be knocking on your door and telling you that your child has been killed in one of these stupid ride-outs.”

Driver added that it is illegal to ride bicycles or e-bikes on the Harbour Bridge, an offence that carries a $460 fine.

The group was later stopped at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and dispersed, and fortunately no injuries were reported.

“Please, have that conversation with your children so they appreciate the risks that go with this very immature behaviour,” he said.

“There is no second chance.”

Police did not initiate a pursuit due to safety concerns, but they are reviewing CCTV footage and social media videos to identify those responsible.

NSW Premier Chris Minns addressed the issue on Wednesday, saying: “I accept that the current situation is intolerable and it’s dangerous for a lot of people.”

“We’re working on a program and we’ll have more to say soon.”

NSW opposition transport spokeswoman Natalie Ward called for compulsory licence plates for e-bikes.

“Joy rides on the Sydney Harbour Bridge are stupid, unsafe and a middle finger to the police and the community,” she said.

“These kids know they are unaccountable and untouchable until there is compulsory licence plates, enforcement and accountability.”
