For mums-to-be, few moments are as special as finding out whether they’re having a boy or a girl.
But one woman’s gender reveal took an unexpected turn after her own mother hijacked the moment, pranking her with the wrong gender.
Koko shared the moment on TikTok, posting a video with the popular “you think you can hurt me?” trend. Text over the clip read, “You think you can hurt me? My mum purposely put the wrong gender at my own reveal.”
In the footage, Koko is surrounded by friends and family as she pops a balloon, which releases blue confetti, indicating a boy. She reacts with visible excitement, screaming and celebrating the announcement.
Moments later, she is handed an envelope containing a printed note that reads “It’s a girl.”
Upon seeing it, Koko’s reaction changes immediately.
Her excitement turns to visible upset and she walks away from the group.
Speaking about the moment, she captioned the video: “All I wanted was a beautiful moment. I didn’t expect it to end in tears.”
The video also includes later clips showing Koko during a maternity photoshoot and footage of her newborn baby girl in hospital, confirming she ultimately gave birth to a baby girl.
The incident prompted strong reactions from viewers, many of whom criticised the prank. One person commented, “This was evil.”
Another wrote, “The way she stood over you to film your disappointed face.”
A third comment read, “What a horrible thing to do to you! That’s not funny or cute esp if she knew you wanted a boy!”
Others directed criticism at Koko herself, suggesting her reaction was tied to disappointment over not having a boy.
However, one commenter pushed back, writing, “she’s not upset that it’s a girl…she’s upset cause she was deceived.”
Some viewers argued that pranks are not uncommon at gender reveal events and are sometimes used to drag out the suspense.
That view was also challenged, with one person responding, “Gender reveals are not the time to be playing pranks, idk why y’all feel it is. Emotions are too high to be playing around.”
