Time magazine has named the “Architects of AI” as its 2025 Person of the Year.
The publication described 2025 as the year in which the potential of artificial intelligence “roared into view” with no signs of turning back.
“For delivering the age of thinking machines, for wowing and worrying humanity, for transforming the present and transcending the possible, the Architects of AI are TIME‘s 2025 Person of the Year,” Time said in a social media post.
According to prediction markets, AI was among the leading contenders for the designation, alongside Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Pope Leo XIV – the first US-born pontiff, elected this year following the death of Pope Francis – was also a serious candidate. Other figures widely expected to be considered included US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
Trump was selected as Time’s 2024 Person of the Year after securing a second presidential term. He succeeded Taylor Swift, who held the title in 2023.
Time’s annual selection, which began in 1927, recognises the individual or group its editors believe most shaped global events over the previous year.
