Robert Irwin has shared a heartbreaking update about his beloved dog while spending time in the United States for Dancing with the Stars.

The 21-year-old took to Instagram on Sunday to reveal that his pug, Stella, had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous mass.

“This is a tough one. I wanted to give an unfortunate update on my sweet little pup, Stella. A mass was discovered that ended up being cancerous,” he said.

“We still don’t know the full extent of the cancer. I have faith she’ll be in the clear.”

Irwin said Stella is an “important part of our little fam” and admitted it had been difficult “being away from home and away from her while she goes through this.”

“I know you guys love seeing her and I love sharing her with you so wanted to give an update… she is doing ok post-surgery so far, she’s my little bestie and one tough cookie,” he wrote.

The wildlife conservationist also shared a selfie with Stella and another photo showing her resting in recovery after the procedure.

On TikTok, Irwin posted a short video reflecting on the emotional week.

“It’s been a big week. It’s been a really tough week. We have been working on our dedication dance for my mum,” he explained.

“And our little dog back at home has cancer which is just devastating. We are still waiting to find out if it has spread and it’s been such a stressful time.”

The 21-year-old has been captivating audiences on the U.S. season of Dancing with the Stars in recent weeks, performing alongside his professional dance partner, Witney Carson.

Last Tuesday, fans praised the pair after they delivered a lively salsa performance to Tommy Richman’s viral 2024 hit Million Dollar Baby.

The routine began with Witney seated on Irwin’s shoulders before he guided her to the floor and into an embrace.

The pair moved in perfect rhythm, with Irwin maintaining a focused “Blue Steel” expression.

Midway through the performance, Robert tore off his shirt, prompting cheers from the audience.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba appeared visibly impressed.

“Robert Irwin is all grown up, wow, you’re making me feel like a grandmother,” she said.

“Put your shirt back on. Great performance.”

Judge Bruno Tonioli drew comparisons between Irwin and Australian star Chris Hemsworth, as Derek Hough took a more reserved approach.

“You’re strong, assertive, a great performer – but I wasn’t fooled by them abs,” he said, drawing boos from the audience.

Irwin and Witney ultimately earned a score of 22, placing them third in the competition.

Despite his growing success on the show, Irwin’s thoughts remain firmly with Stella as she recovers at home.
