Veteran sports presenter Matt Carmichael will depart the Seven Network next month after more than two decades with the broadcaster.
Carmichael, who was with the network for 23 years and served as both a presenter and Sydney sports editor, was recently informed his contract would not be renewed.
Initial reports suggested the departure may have been linked to redundancy, but sources within the network have indicated the decision was made not to extend his contract, and no financial payout will be made.
Carmichael, who remained at Seven following a major newsroom restructure in 2024, has not made any public comment about his exit and attempts to reach him for comment on Thursday were unsuccessful, according to news.com.au.
Some former staff members have reportedly described challenges with Carmichael’s leadership style, and several are understood to have left the network before the end of their contracts.
A Seven spokesperson declined to respond to questions about Carmichael’s management of staff during his tenure.
Seven’s news director, Ray Kuka, informed staff of Carmichael’s departure in a statement that read: “Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break. Matt leaves as a script craftsman. Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after Bathurst 1000.
“We wish Matt all the best and look forward to celebrating his final weeks.”
Carmichael had previously maintained close working relationships with several newsroom colleagues, including sports presenter Mel McLaughlin, however it has been reported that their dynamic may have shifted in recent times.
This comes as Seven looks to strengthen its sports reporting team, with a renewed focus on breaking news and original coverage.
At a recent Seven “Presenter’s Dinner” held at Verde in Sydney, Carmichael and McLaughlin were observed sitting separately.
Attendees included presenters Mark Ferguson, Angela Cox, Michael Usher, Angie Asimus and Sally Bowrey. Producers and reporters were not present at the event.
