The family of Matildas captain Sam Kerr is in mourning following the death of her grandmother, Coral Kerr, aged 90.
Coral had shown remarkable strength after suffering serious injuries in December last year when she was struck by a vehicle shortly after stepping off a bus near her Palmyra home in Fremantle, WA. Despite undergoing extensive surgeries and a lengthy recovery, she was able to celebrate her milestone 90th birthday surrounded by family in April.
Just 10 months on from the accident, Coral has sadly passed away. A private funeral service was held on Tuesday morning near her home.
Last week, the family published a heartfelt obituary in The West Australian. It read:
“Though you no longer walk beside us, your presence is felt in every shared memory and quiet reflections. Be at peace knowing you will never be forgotten.”
The notice went on to acknowledge her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, though it did not mention Sam, her brother and former AFL player Daniel Kerr, or their parents Roger and Roxanne.
Coral and her husband emigrated from India to Australia more than 50 years ago, building a close-knit family in Perth. She had spoken warmly in the past about her bond with Sam, describing their relationship as “fantastic”.
“Nearly every week, she sends me a message, I phone her. I FaceTime with her,” Coral said previously. “Whenever she comes home, she’s always here having breakfast … she never fails to come and see me and take me out.”
