A man from New South Wales has allegedly removed a baby from a home at knifepoint after bashing a young woman.

The man is accused of breaking into the Illawarra home and assaulted the 23-year-old woman who is known to him.

He is accused of grabbing her by the throat, throwing her on the ground and punching and kicking her repeatedly.

He allegedly repeatedly rammed her head into a bedframe before holding a knife to her throat and taking the three-month-old baby.

The baby was later found safe with the man a short time later.

The woman was hospitalised with head lacerations, bruising and bite marks as well as a fingernail being ripped off.

The man is now facing a series of domestic-violence related charges, including choking, assault, going armed with intent and contravening an apprehended violence order.

He is set to face Wollongong Local Court on Monday.
