A short video filmed inside a Qantas cabin has done something that rarely happens on social media these days – it has made almost everyone who watched it feel a little better about the world.

The footage, taken on a Qantas flight from Brisbane to Mount Isa on October 12, shows a flight attendant named Andrew gently rocking a fussy baby up and down the aisle while the child’s exhausted parents finally get a moment to eat their meal.

It is the kind of small, practical kindness most grandparents will recognise instantly – the offer to hold the baby so mum or dad can have five minutes to themselves.

Passenger Jeliamn Dann captured the moment on his phone and posted it to TikTok, where it has since been viewed more than 220,000 times.

Dann, who was travelling with his own family, said the baby had been wide awake and unsettled until Andrew stepped in. “The baby was a little fussy but definitely very well awake until Andrew rocked him to sleep,” he said.

He described watching the scene unfold from his own seat mid-meal. “I remember Andrew was chatting to the parents and holding the baby while I was eating my food, which I was asleep when they were serving around the middle of the flight,” he said.

@jeliamndann Sometimes catching a plane with young kids can be tough. But I caught this on my flight to Mount Isa yesterday. This Qantas staff member assisted this family by rocking their baby to sleep so the parents could have a moment to eat. Other passengers noticed too. “He was rocking the baby for about 15 minutes I noticed a few people walking past and admiring Andrew, lots of smiles and people looking at the baby,” Dann said.

When Dann’s video found its way to the flight attendant himself on TikTok, Andrew’s response was characteristically understated. He said he was “just doing the right thing and his job” – though plenty of commenters felt he had gone well beyond that.

For Dann, the moment carried a message that reached further than one flight. “There are so many families who are so fearful and anxious of taking their little ones on planes but because of this video of Andrew, they have hope,” he said.

Anyone who has flown with a grandchild, or remembers doing the long haul with their own young children decades ago, knows exactly what that fear looks like – the brace position before takeoff, the apologetic glances to fellow passengers, the relief when a stranger simply smiles instead of sighing.

In his original post, Dann put it plainly for anyone who has ever juggled a pram through an airport gate. “Sometimes catching a plane with young kids can be tough,” he wrote, before thanking the crew member directly. “From all the tired parents with young kids, thank you sir.”

Sometimes the whole internet agrees on something, and for once it is not an argument – it is simply one man, one baby, and 15 minutes of ordinary grace at 30,000 feet.
