Amanda Keller has had to put down her beloved family dog, Mini, who was diagnosed with lymphoma – a cancer common in senior dogs – a few weeks ago.
The radio host held back tears as she made the announcement on-air during the Jonesy & Amanda show on Tuesday.
She revealed that her 14-year-old border collie had died the day before, and opened up about the heartbreaking moment she knew it was time to say goodbye.
“Yesterday was such a long hard day. Early in the morning, I realised that was going to have to be the day,” she said.
“I actually thought I was going to take her to the vet for a final check-up, to see if there was anything that could be done, but I realised the stress of getting her into the car … we’re at the end here.”
She said her family all came together to farewell Mini before the vets arrived.
“We were all sitting in the courtyard and Mini got up … we were all patting her on the head and telling her how much we loved her,” she said.
The presenter described the family’s emotional final moments with their beloved pet, with Mini’s head resting in her hands as the vets came to put her down.
She also shared her grief on social media, with a montage of photographs with mini and the song The Sun Will Never Settle by Kingfisher playing in the background.
“We lost our beautiful Mini yesterday. She crossed the rainbow bridge with her family telling her she was loved and that she would forever be missed,” she wrote.
“So grateful for the last 14 years we spent together. Hard to picture life without her.”
