After three seasons and a string of awards, Australian comedy Colin From Accounts is coming to an end, with its stars saying goodbye to a series that has become a hit both at home and overseas.

The BINGE Original will air its final episode on September 7, bringing the story of Gordon, played by Patrick Brammall, and Ashley, played by Harriet Dyer, to a close.

The series follows the unlikely couple after a chance encounter on the road leads Gordon to hit a dog. The pair later adopt the injured animal and name him Colin, eventually becoming a couple themselves.

Created by real-life husband and wife Brammall and Dyer, the series premiered in 2022 and quickly became one of Australia’s best-known comedies.

It has won an AACTA Award for Best Narrative Comedy Series and three Logie Awards for Brammall and Dyer. The series has also found an international audience in the UK, US and more than 100 other countries.

Ahead of the final episode, Brammall and Dyer shared a joint message on Instagram alongside previously unseen photographs from the set.

“The final episode of Colin flies from our hearts to yours today,” they captioned the photos. “The UK gets the job lot tomorrow, the US a few days later. Can’t articulate what this show means to us, but you can probably feel it in the show. Thank you for watching.”

The final season has tested Gordon and Ashley’s relationship as they question whether they are truly meant to be together or whether Colin is the main thing keeping them connected.

For the cast, finishing the series has been an emotional experience.

Genevieve Hegney, who plays Gordon’s friend and brewery business partner Chiara, said the cast and crew struggled to hold back their tears on the final day of filming.

“The last day on set, everybody burst into spontaneous tears. Everybody cried,” Hegney told news.com.au.

“I think it’d be true to say everyone cried because it’s been such a joy to make. And I think that joy is absolutely on the screen. I think that everyone felt really respected and there was great actors and everyone was there to make a great show.”

“And just working with this cast, really – truly world-class funny people – has just been, honestly, the greatest working experience of my life overall,” she added.

Virginia Gay, who plays the character Rumi, described the end of the series as a “massive loss” for Australian television.

“I will miss the experience of shooting it. I may never be on a happier set and that is devastating,” Gay said.

“The show feels so authentic, even while it’s absolutely insane. I just love that both of those things can exist at once: deep emotional truths surrounded by the most joyful, insane comedy.”

The series began with an idea Dyer wrote almost 10 years ago. She previously revealed she wrote the pilot in just four days.

The couple said there were tears when filming ended, but described the experience as more positive than sad.

“There were some tears, but appropriate. An appropriate amount of tears,” Brammall recalled of the final day of filming. “It’s more sweet than bitter though, because to be able to hand it over to the audience who it was intended for is the best feeling.”

“We’ve been living with it for so long and we love it. We love this world. We love the characters. But it’s for you guys, it’s for you guys to enjoy. So we hope you do.”
