Today host Sarah Abo has made a special return to the morning television couch, four weeks after welcoming her first child.

Abo, who departed Today earlier this year to go on maternity leave, returned to the program with her newborn son, Sonny, bundled in her arms.

The journalist and her husband Cyrus Moran, welcomed Sonny in mid-July.

Back on the show to catch up with her colleagues and viewers, Abo was clearly enjoying her new role as a mother.

The 39-year-old said she was “so obsessed” with her “darling boy”.

“It’s amazing, actually, the transformation that your mind takes because you just go, ‘I don’t care about anything else’, and you are the most important thing in my life,” she said.

“And you just keep staring at them and the noises they make and the faces they make change all the time.”

Abo said the family had settled into a good routine, with Sonny feeding and sleeping well.

Her experience of the early mornings required for her Today hosting duties has also proved useful during the first weeks of motherhood.

“This job does definitely prepare you, and everyone said that! I thought I wasn’t getting much sleep doing this, but let me tell you,” she said with a laugh.

“Sleep is very welcome, and you don’t get much of it when you have a little bubba, but it’s all worth it.”

Abo is also preparing for a return to the spotlight at the Logies on August 16.

The new mum will attend the awards without Sonny, joking that a “superhero effort” is taking place behind the scenes to get her ready for the evening.

“I think it’s a nice opportunity to be there with you guys all as well,” she told her Today colleagues.

It will be a busy night for Abo, with Today nominated for Best Current Affairs Program.

She is also nominated for the Ray Martin Award for Most Popular News or Public Affairs Presenter.
