Madeleine McCann’s younger brother, Sean McCann, has been selected to represent Scotland in swimming at this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 21-year-old will compete in freestyle events, in hopes of competing on the Great Britain team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
It marks another milestone in Sean’s swimming career after previously representing Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where he competed in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events.
Sean first discovered his passion for swimming as a child and has since built an impressive competitive record.
“At the age of ten, I was selected to swim at City of Leicester and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles as well as becoming regional and National champion in my age group,” he said in a statement to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.
He has also competed as an open water swimmer, becoming part of the National Open Water Development Squad and qualifying for the 2025 European Open Water Championships.
In a video shared by Loughborough Swimming last year, Sean reflected on how his swimming journey began.
“When I was eight, my mum [Kate McCann] took me to Loughborough Town [swimming club] and I hated it at first, didn’t want to go, but after a while, it grew on me and I’m still here now,” he said.
Sean also spoke about the commitment required to compete at an elite level.
“I train nine times a week in the pool, as well as three gym sessions, totalling over 20 hours of training per week. I’ve had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11.”
Sean was just two years old when his sister, Madeleine, went missing while the family was on holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
Madeleine was three years old when she vanished.
Portuguese authorities initially named her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, as suspects before later withdrawing that claim.
German investigators have since identified Christian Brückner as the prime suspect, although no charges have been laid in relation to Madeleine’s disappearance.
Despite one of the world’s most high-profile missing person investigations, she has never been found and is presumed dead by German authorities.
