Cold Chisel has announced the death of longtime band member and saxophonist Andy Bickers.

The Aussie rock legends confirmed his death in a statement shared to Instagram on Friday morning, describing Bickers’ as a “brother and an incredibly musician”.

“Our much-loved sax player of more than 30 years, Andy Bicker, passed away this morning after a hard-fought battle with cancer,” they wrote in the statement.

“Andy was our brother; an incredible musician and a great person to be out on the road or out on the town with.

“His valuable contribution onstage to songs like Rising Sun, Saturday Night and My Baby will be sorely missed.

“Our hearts break for his wife Lisa and his son Rudy.”

Tributes have poured in with Cold Chisel lead singer Jimmy Barnes writing: “We were friends not only because he was a great player but he was funny, intelligent, and most importantly, he was a good man. Lots of love to Lisa and Rudy. You will be sadly missed, Andy x.”

Former breakfast TV host Michael Rowland also shared his condolences.

“RIP Andy. Condolences to his family. Thanks for the music,” he shared under the post.

Originally from Wellington in New Zealand, Bickers relocated to Australia after a growing interest in Aussie music videos.

He first moved to Melbourne and later Sydney, where he worked on live music before being invited to join Jimmy Barnes’ touring band, which eventually led to him becoming a member of Cold Chisel.

Bickers has also toured with other bands including  The Eagles, Midnight Oil and Diesel.
