Fresh speculation has emerged that Robert Irwin could be in the running to replace Karl Stefanovic on Today, although the reports remain unconfirmed.

The rumours come as Nine continues its search for a new co-host to join Sarah Abo, following Stefanovic’s departure after his podcast interview with British far-right figure Tommy Robinson.

According to New Idea, unnamed “industry sources” claim Nine executives are keen to recruit the 22-year-old wildlife conservationist and television presenter for the breakfast show.

The publication reported the network was “desperately trying to get Robert Irwin to join their ranks and take over from Karl, 51, and they’re prepared to offer him ‘whatever he wants'”.

The claims have not been confirmed by Nine or Irwin.

Several names have already been linked to the role, including Tom Steinfort, James Bracey, Charles Croucher, Clint Stanaway, and David Campbell.

However, New Idea‘s source claimed those names could be a distraction while the network gets its “ducks in a row” with Irwin.

The magazine also pointed to the fact that Irwin is one of just 195 accounts followed by the Today program on Instagram.

“It’s the sort of thing people inside television notice,” the unnamed source told the publication.

“It could be coincidence … or it could be the first breadcrumb.”

Speculation about Irwin’s next television move has continued since Network 10 paused the production of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, which he has co-hosted alongside Julia Morris since 2024.

If the reports prove true, the role would add to a growing list of high-profile opportunities for Irwin, whose profile has continued to rise in Australia and overseas.

He is set to host next month’s Logie Awards on Channel Seven and is also working on a US spin-off of Dancing with the Stars for Disney.

He has also fronted major advertising campaigns and recently reunited with Prince William in London to promote the Earthshot Prize.
