Hugh Jackman has given longtime friend Ryan Reynolds a crash course in one of Australia’s most famous traditions – the shoey.

The pair celebrated a recent win by the BONDS Flying Roos team in the SailGP competition by taking part in the uniquely Australian post-race ritual, with Jackman sharing the moment on social media.

Jackman and Reynolds are co-owners of the Australian SailGP team, which is also the focus of an upcoming Disney+ docuseries following the high-speed sailing competition.

Traditionally, a shoey involves drinking beer from a shoe, a celebration popularised by Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo. In this case, Jackman opted for a slightly cleaner alternative, using a ceramic Converse-style sneaker.

“I would say it’s been a good 35 years since my last shoey!!!” Jackman captioned the video.

The clip quickly attracted attention online, with fans delighted to see the Hollywood stars embracing the Australian tradition.

”Way to throw down that shoey …. Even after 35 years you still got it! Congrats to @bondsflyingroos; even after such a rough start to the race weekend congrats on such a magnificent win!” one fan wrote.

“This might just be the hottest video you’ve ever posted,” another commented.

A third fan added: “Ahaha this is EVERYTHING!!!”

Others simply described the moment as “Iconic”.

Jackman and Reynolds first worked together on the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine before reuniting for the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Their friendship has since become one of Hollywood’s most well-known, thanks to years of playful public banter and mutual support.

The pair are now teaming up again for a behind-the-scenes look at SailGP through their upcoming Disney+ series.

“This is our first collaboration since Deadpool & Wolverine and we once again anticipate action, comedy, heart but with a lot more water. And (fingers crossed) pirates. We hope there’s pirates in SailGP,” they said in a joint statement.

An official release date for the series is yet to be announced, with the 2026 SailGP season still underway.
