Australian comedian Judith Lucy has been discharged from hospital following a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
The 58-year-old shared the update on Instagram, saying she was relieved to be home following the surgery, which took place last week.
“So I’m out of hospital which, despite the incredible care I received, was a lot like a long-haul flight: no fresh air, people waking you up the whole time, food you look forward to and then don’t want to eat and, of course, you can’t wait for it to be over,” she wrote.
Lucy also spoke candidly about adjusting to life after the operation, while sharing an encouraging update about the cancer.
“Admittedly when you land at Heathrow you do generally still have both your breasts. Anyway, FINALLY my ballet career can begin! I’m not going to pretend that no longer having melons isn’t super weird but it looks like it’s not in my nodes which, as a friend who has dealt way too much with breast cancer said, ‘is like winning the cancer lottery’.
“I’m not exactly at the point where I’m viewing this all as ‘a gift’ but I’m so grateful it was caught so early. Again (and as Breast Care Awareness Month comes to a close) whether it’s a mammogram or self examination, check those sweater puppies out!!!”
Lucy revealed her diagnosis in an Instagram video on October 6, explaining that she was alerted to concerns following a routine mammogram through BreastScreen Australia.
She initially underwent a lumpectomy, but further cancer was found, leading to the decision to have a mastectomy. She opted to have both breasts removed.
The comedian said the cancer was detected early and was non-aggressive, and encouraged other women to keep up with breast checks and screening.
Her announcement prompted messages of support from fellow entertainers and followers, with some sharing that her experience had encouraged them to book mammograms.
Lucy has also spoken about her health in connection with her memoir, Well Well Well … My wellness odyssey from psychics to psychedelics and beyond, which explores her experiences with wellness and her search for ways to improve her life.
